    Notizen: Abstract The problem of finding appropriate mathematical objects to model images is considered. Using the notion of acompleted graph of a bounded function, which is a closed and bounded point set in the three-dimensional Euclidean spaceR 3, and exploring theHausdorff distance between these point sets, a metric spaceIM D of functions is defined. The main purpose is to show that the functionsf∈IM D, defined on the squareD=[0,1]2, are appropriate mathematical models of real world images. The properties of the metric spaceIM D are studied and methods of approximation for the purpose of image compression are presented. The metric spaceIM D contains the so-calledpixel functions which are produced through digitizing images. It is proved that every functionf∈IM D may be digitized and represented by a pixel functionp n, withn pixels, in such a way that the distance betweenf andp n is no greater than 2n −1/2. It is advocated that the Hausdorff distance is the most natural one to measure the difference between two pixel representations of a given image. This gives a natural mathematical measure of the quality of the compression produced through different methods.

    Notizen: The initiating ability of the graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) of SbCl5, FeCl3, and AlBr3 was investigated. It was found that GICs were able to initiate the polymerization of monomers of different types-cyclosiloxanes, 1,2-epoxides, vinyl ethers, lactones, and vinyl monomers. GICs of SbCl5 initiated also the polymerization of tetrahydrofuran. The interaction of the monomers (with the exception of the lactones) caused a size increase of the GICs and deformations in their lamellar structure. Relatively high-molecular poly(vinyl ethers) and polydimethylcyclosiloxanes were obtained. The mechanism of action of GICs was discussed.

    Notizen: The copolymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and styrene (St) under the action of the second-stage potassium graphitide KC24 was investigated. The copolymerizations were carried out in bulk or in xylene at 20°C. The content of the block copolymer ε-CL/D4 in the polymerization mixture was 60-95%, the molecular weight ranging between 150,000 and 300,000. The data for the copolymers' composition obtained by 1H-NMR and GPC showed 14-20% of D4-units in the copolymer. The amount of the block copolymer ε-CL/St in the polymerization products was 0-87%, and the molecular weights in the case of copolymer formation were between 100,000 and 500,000. The content of St-units in the copolymers was from 10 to 75% as shown by GPC and 1H-NMR. The mechanism of action of the initiator is discussed.

    Notizen: The principles of NMR imaging applicable to materials are reviewed, and examples of current developments given. Among the different types of materials, polymers are particularly suitable for NMR imaging, because they are rich in protons, the most sensitive NMR nucleus. While the spatial resolution in solid materials is restricted to dimensions larger than 50 μm, the interest in NMR as an imaging technique derives from the abundance of parameters, which can be converted to image contrast for localization and identification of material morphology, chemistry and physics. Particular progress has been achieved in imaging of polymer melts and liquids, where diffusion and non-Newtonian flow are investigated as well as of elastomers, where composition, deterioration by thermal and mechanical aging, and stress distribution can be characterized.

    Notizen: The anionic polymerization of δ-valerolactone initiated by KC24 in xylene or tetrahydrofuran was investigated. The influence of the polymerization conditions on the amount and composition of the oligomers fraction and high polymers formed was tested. Experiments were done with a potassium mirror and benzophenone-potassium as initiators of the polymerization to check the influence of the layered structure of the initiator. It was found that the amount of the oligomers formed under comparable conditions increases in the order KC24 (9%), potassium mirror (22%), benzophenone-potassium (56%). The highest yields of poly(δ-valerolactone) (over 90%) and highest intrinsic viscosities (1.0 dL/g and more) were achieved by the KC24-initiated polymerizations in xylene.
