Description / Table of Contents: Summary Metabolically healthy subjects were given an intravenous injection of 1,13 mg14C-labelled glibenclamide (HB 419). The plasma level, renal elimination of the radioactivity and metabolism of the substance were investigated. Two minutes after administration the HB 419 is virtually present only in the blood and at the end of the distribution period mostly in the extracellular space. 53% of the radioactivity is excreted via the kidneys in the form of metabolites. If glibenclamide is administrated in the same way to the same subjects after pretreatment with phenylbutazone there are no differences in the course of the plasma levels or the rate of elimination from the blood. There is, however, a significant difference in the excretion of the radioactivity in the urine. In the presence of phenylbutazone significantly less HB 419 metabolite is excreted renally. In view of the known alternative route of elimination it is suggested that the amount not excreted in the urine is in compensation eliminated via the bile. There was no difference in the metabolism of glibenclamide between the control and phenylbutazone treated groups. The potentiation by phenylbutazone of HB 419 action, and probably also that of other antidiabetic sulphonylureas, must therefore be due predominantly to other causes (Communication III).
Notes: Nascent high-molecular-weight (UHMW) polyethylene (PE) samples of different origins show a rather high crystallinity of about 70-75% and contain both a major portion of orthorhombic extended chain crystallites and a minor portion of triclinic crystallites. The triclinic content is greater the higher the molecular weight of the sample and the higher the activity of the used catalyser. A melting / recooling treatment results in a reduction of crystallinity by about 15-25% and disappearance of the triclinic phase. Further, an irreversible conversion of nascent orthorhombic extended chain crystallites to orthorhombic folded chain crystallites of increased lateral dimensions and crystalline perfections takes place during the melting / recooling treatment. The results are compared to those obtained for lower-molecular-weight PE samples and for high-strength / modulus PE fibers of different origins.

Description / Table of Contents: Phase Relations and Reactions in the NiO—TiO2 SystemThe quasibinary NiO—TiO2 phase diagram was studied between 1 300 and 1 600°C in air by optical and X-ray methods and by electron microprobe analysis. The only ternary phase which is stable within the whole range of temperature is the ilmenite-type compound NiTiO3. The compound Ni3TiO5, described in the literature [4], is identified to be a single-phased NiO—TiO2 solid solution with a wide range of homogeneity. The nature of spinel reflexes, detected in addition to the reflexes of the NiO lattice, is discussed. The formation of NiTiO3 in a second kind reaction follows the parabolic rate law. The Arrhenius equation is expressed by \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm k}^{(2)} = {\rm k}_0 ^{(2)} \exp [- 427,8{\rm kJmol}^{- 1} /{\rm RT}]{\rm cm}^2 \sec ^{- 1} $$\end{document}.Probably the mechanism of counterdiffusion of cations according to Wagner is superposed by a one directional flux of Ni2+ ions and electrons.

Description / Table of Contents: PVC(E) latex samples of polymers obtained by standard and seed polymerisation were subjected to glow discharge etching under mild conditions at two different temperatures. Depending on the experimental conditions the etched particles reveal more or less distinctly differentiate dstructural units extending from less than 10 nm to about 20 nm in size. These subunits are considered as regions of higher order within the particles observed.

Description / Table of Contents: With PE gel-fibres can be achieved draw rations over 20 by cold drawing. The strength level is lower than in the case of hot drawing. First data refer to a modified deformation model of high strength fibres.
