Description: The average response of the vorticity area index (the area of all the low-pressure troughs in North America) immediately before, during and after the carriage of solar magnetic boundaries past the earth by the solar wind was investigated. It was found that during winter months the vorticity index usually reaches a minimum about one day after boundary passage. The amplitude of the effect from the minimum to the adjacent maxima was about 10%. Comparison of results obtained for the latitude zone 35 deg N to 55 deg N with those obtained for the zone 55 deg N to 90 deg N shows that at times that are not near boundary passages minima in the two zones occur independently, whereas some solar influence apparently causes both zones to show minima one day after the passage of a sector boundary.
