    Description: Densities of molecular nitrogen and monatomic oxygen are presented as a function of altitude for selected intervals of March-May 1972 Oso 7 satellite data. Results on atmospheric attenuation of solar extreme UV radiation at 200-400 A, at heights from 250 to 500 km, are of particular interest. Satellite sunrise measurements above 330 km are not consistent with the Jacchia (1971) atmospheric model, and may constitute evidence for dynamic phenomena occurring in the heated upper levels. Density and temperature variations are considered mainly responsible for the sunrise anomaly observed. Checks were made for possible errors in the satellite pointing system and other instrumental effects.

    Description: After a brief review of observations of the global distribution of stratospheric NO2, the possibiliy of combining different data sets to construct a NO2 reference model is discussed. It is shown that difficulties mainly arise from the diversity of techniques and variability of NO2 in the stratosphere. The diurnal variation and possibly a long term trend present special problems.

    Description: The ozone density of the earth's mesosphere in the 1.0-0.1 mbar (48 to 70 km) region has been measured at sunlit latitudes for the period from December 1981 until the present by an ultraviolet spectrometer on the Solar Mesosphere Explorer satellite. Results for 1982 are reported. The ozone mixing ratios are found to be highly variable in time and place, with maxima occurring in the winter hemispheres. The results show complex time variations at all pressure levels, with annual and semiannual variations apparent at most pressures and latitudes. A relative maximum occurs in July at the equator.

    Description: The primary test site for water supply investigations continues to be the Feather River watershed in northeastern California. This test site includes all of the area draining into and including the Oroville Reservoir. The principal effort is to determine the extent to which remote sensing techniques, when properly employed, can provide information useful to those persons concerned with the management and planning of lands and facilities for the production of water, using the Oroville Reservoir and the California Water Project as the focus for the study. In particular, emphasis is being placed on determining the cost effectiveness of information derived through remote sensing as compared with that currently being derived through more conventional means.

    Description: The nitric oxide density was measured from 110 to 300 km by a rocket photometer during the day. The small measured peak density, about 6.2 x 10 to the 6th/cu cm at 111 km, can probably be attributed to the period of very low solar magnetic activity preceding the rocket flight. This experiment was coordinated with a similar measurement made by the Ultraviolet Nitric Oxide Experiment aboard the Atmosphere Explorer C satellite; the measurements are in good agreement. The altitude resolution (less than 1 km) and sensitivity (1600 counts/R/s) greatly exceed those of previous measurements. Comparison to a model shows agreement above 200 km but less nitric oxide and more structure below that.

    Description: Altimeter measurements of ranges to modelled irregular surfaces are simulated and two correction schemes are used to reconstruct the modelled surfaces from the simulated data. When the cross-track slope is negligible, the problem can be treated as two-dimensional and the relocation method is preferred to the slope correction method. In a two-dimensional test case, 85 percent of the slope-induced rms error was removed by the relocation method. The mean error along profiles of about 75 km or longer is usually reduced more than the rms error. An alternative slope correction scheme, which uses the local slope to calculate the expected error, is less effective in the two-dimensional case. Over a simulated three-dimensional surface, where groundtracks are widely spaced and cross-track slopes are significant, the slope-correction method must be used in at least the cross-track direction.

    Description: Preliminary results from Seasat radar altimetry over Antarctica north of 72 deg S and Greenland south of 72 deg N are presented. Surface elevations of the ice sheets, obtained from computer retracking of the radar altimeter waveforms, are contoured at 50-m intervals for Greenland and at 100-m intervals for Antarctica. Elevation differences at orbital crossover points are analyzed to obtain a precision of 1.9 m; this figure is partly determined by radial errors of approximately 1.0 m in orbital determination and partly by noise due to ice surface irregularities. Adjustment of the radial components of the orbits to minimize the differences in elevations at crossovers over a small, relatively flat region reduces the rms difference to 0.25 m, which is indicative of the optimum precision obtainable over the ice sheets. However, the precision degrades as the slope of the surface or amplitude of the undulations increases, yielding an overall precision of + or - 1.6 m.

    Description: Seasonal variations of the OH-asterisk (7-5) mesospheric hydroxyl emission at 1.89 microns observed by the SME near-IR spectrometer are compared with the theoretical predictions of a two-dimensional dynamical/chemical model. The good agreement found at low latitudes for both dayglow and nightglow provides support for the model assumption that breaking gravity waves induce seasonal and latitudinal variations in diffusion. The seasonal behavior of atomic hydrogen in the upper mesosphere (related to vertical transport) and/or uncertainties in the OH Meinel band parameters are proposed as possible explanations for the discrepancy noted between model and observational data for the middle latitudes.
