    Description: Carbon dioxide-rich inclusions commonly occur in the banded charnockites and khondalites of southern Kerala as well as in the incipient charnockites formed by desiccation of gneisses along oriented zones. The combined high density fluid inclusion isochores and the range of thermometric estimates from mineral assemblages indicate entrapment pressures in the range of 5.4 to 6.1 Kbar. The CO2 equation of state barometry closely compares with the 5 plus or minus 1 Kbar estimate from mineral phases for the region. The isochores for the high density fluid inclusions in all the three rock types pass through the P-T domain recorded by phase equilibria, implying that carbon dioxide was the dominating ambient fluid species during peak metamorphic conditions. In order to constrain the source of fluids and to evaluate the mechanism of desiccation, researchers undertook detailed investigations of the carbon stable isotope composition of entrapped fluids. Researchers report here the results of preliminary studies in some of the classic localities in southern Kerala namely, Ponmudi, Kottavattom, Manali and Kadakamon.

    Description: Fluid inclusion and petrologic characteristics of South India granulites and their bearing on the sources of metamorphic fluids are discussed. This paper served as a review and an introduction to the next paper by D. Jackson. Jackson presented carbon isotope data from gases extracted from fluid inclusions in South Indian granulites. The uniformly low Delta C-13 values (minus 10 plus or minus 2 per mil) and the greater abundance of CO2 in the incipient charnockites are suggestive of fluid influx from an externally buffered reservoir.

    Description: Geodetic data at a plate boundary can reveal the pattern of subsurface displacements that accompany plate motion. These displacements are modelled as the sum of rigid block motion and the elastic effects of frictional interaction between blocks. The frictional interactions are represented by uniform dislocation on each of several rectangular fault patches. The block velocities and fault parameters are then estimated from geodetic data. Bayesian inversion procedure employs prior estimates based on geological and seismological data. The method is applied to the Transverse Ranges, using prior geological and seismological data and geodetic data from the USGS trilateration networks. Geodetic data imply a displacement rate of about 20 mm/yr across the San Andreas Fault, while the geologic estimates exceed 30 mm/yr. The prior model and the final estimates both imply about 10 mm/yr crustal shortening normal to the trend of the San Andreas Fault. Aseismic fault motion is a major contributor to plate motion. The geodetic data can help to identify faults that are suffering rapid stress accumulation; in the Transverse Ranges those faults are the San Andreas and the Santa Susana.

    Description: In September 1993, the NASA Millimeter-wave Imaging Radiometer (MIR) flew on board the NASA ER-2 high-altitude aircraft during CAMEX, and obtained the first wideband millimeter- and submillimeter-wavelength images of tropospheric emission. The MIR is a cross-track radiometer with channels at 89, 150, 183 +/- 1, 3, 7, 220, and 325 +/- 1, 3, 8 GHz. This set provides upwelling brightness information at the two strong rotational water vapor lines at 183.310 and 325.153 GHz and three nearby atmospheric transmission windows. The wideband MIR images of convective raincells reveal unique cloud and precipitation mapping capabilities that are not available from lower frequency microwave channels. Comparisons between the 183 and 325 GHz spectra also reveal differential brightness temperature modes that are related to cloud water.

    Description: The three-dimensional locations of the monuments in the USGS Hollister trilateration network were adjusted to fit line length observations observed in 1977, using a Bayesian approach, and incorporating prior elevation estimates as data in the adjustment procedure. No significant discrepancies in the measured line lengths were found, but significant elevation adjustments (up to 1.85 m) were needed to fit the length data.

    Description: An attempt has been made to invert a large set of attenuation data for Love waves and toroidal oscillations in the earth, using a recent method by Backus and Gilbert. The difficulty in finding an acceptable model of internal friction which explains the data, under the assumption that the internal friction is independent of frequency, casts doubt on the validity of this assumption. A frequency-dependent model of internal friction is presented which is in good agreement with the seismic data and with recent experimental measurements of attenuation in rocks.

    Description: An analytic approximation to the Green's function for the displacements due to a strike slip point source in an elastic layer over a viscoelastic half-space is developed. This approximate Green's function is useful because it can be analytically integrated over the fault surface. Comparison with a numerical integration of the exact solution integral indicates that the approximation is quite good. The approximate Green's function is integrated analytically to obtain the displacements due to a finite rectangular strike slip fault in an elastic layer over a viscoelastic half-space. Ground displacements and angle changes from a model survey net are computed to illustrate the viscoelastic relaxation which follows a fracture in the elastic region.

    Description: Progress by the Georgia Institute of Technology's Laboratory for Radio-science and Remote Sensing in developing techniques for passive microwave retrieval of water vapor profiles and cloud and precipitation parameters using millimeter and submillimeter wavelength channels is reviewed. Channels of particular interest are in the tropospheric transmission windows at 90, 166, 220, 340, and 410 GHz and centered around the water vapor lines at 183 and 325 GHz. Collectively, these channels have potential application in high-resolution precipitation mapping (e.g., from geosynchronous orbit), remote sensing of cloud and precipitation parameters, including cirrus ice mass, and improved retrieval of water vapor profiles. During the period from January 1, 1994 through June 30, 1994 research activities focussed on calibrating and interpreting data from the Millimeter-Wave Imaging Radiometer (MIR). The MIR was deployed on the NASA ER-2 during the Convective Atmospheric Moisture Experiment (CAMEX, September-October 1993) to obtain the first submillimeter-wave tropospheric imagery of convective precipitations. A 325-GHz radiometer consisted of a submillimeter-wave DSB receiver with three IF channels at +/- 1, 3, and 8.5 GHz, and approximately 14 dB DSB noise figure was successfully operated during these experiments. Activities supported under this grant include a study of the impact of local oscillator reflections from the MIR calibration loads, the development of optimal gain and offset filters for radiometric calibration, and the modeling and interpretation of the MIR 325-GHz data over both clear and cloudy atmospheres. In addition, polarimetric radiometer measurements and modeling for ocean surface and atmospheric cloud-ice studies_were supported.
