Description: The Lake Ontario drainage basin covers over 32,000 square miles of U.S. and Canadian territory. ERTS-1 data is contributing to the comprehensive study of this basin as part of the International Field Year for the Great Lakes (IFYGL). This paper details a processing approach for obtaining detailed and objective synoptic information thought to be applicable to terrestrial water balance studies of such a large area. A simple ratio algorithm was tested for minimizing daily variations in ERTS data and for allowing the discrimination of surface features and land use classes of hydrologic significance. These steps are necessary if ERTS data is to provide the quantitative information required for the study and management of areas of regional size.

Description: An investigation was conducted to measure and understand the physical and mechanical effects that occur in boron fibers during and after thermal treatment in a controlled oxygen argon gaseous mixture. Of principal concern was the optimization of this treatment as a secondary processing method for significantly improving fiber tensile strength. Strengthening was accomplished by an oxidation induced axial contraction of the fiber and a resulting axial compression of strength limiting flaws within the fiber's tungsten boride core. Various physical observations were used to develop mechanistic models for oxidation, contraction, and flow formation. Processing guidelines are discussed for possibly exceeding the 5.5 GN/sq m strength limit and also for achieving fiber strengthening during application of boron containing diffusion barrier coatings.

Description: The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 coverage of the 32,000 square mile Lake Ontario Basin is being used to study short term and seasonal changes which affect many aspects of water problems in the Great Lakes. As part of the International Field Year for the Great Lakes (IFYGL), a coordinated, synoptic study of the Lake Ontario Basin, processed ERTS-1 imagery will contribute to the data base of synchronized observations being made by investigators from many U.S. and Canadian government agencies and universities. The first set of ERTS data has been received and will be processed shortly for parameters of hydrological and limnological significance such as land use, terrain features, and water quality. When complete, nine ERTS-1 frames recorded during a substantially clear period will provide coverage of the entire Basin. Seven frames show all but a small portion of the southern and eastern end of the Basin. Many drainage basin characteristics are clearly identifiable on the imagery.

Description: An investigation of the physical and mechanical effects of thermal treatment in a controlled oxygen-argon atmosphere on boron fibers is reported, with attention to the optimization of such treatment as a secondary processing method for improvement of fiber strength. The strengthening mechanism is comprised of an oxidation-induced axial contraction of the fiber, accompanied by axial compression of strength-limiting flaws within the fiber's tungsten boride core. It was found that after an oxidation contraction of 0.3% near 900 C, and a slight surface etch near 100 C, the average tensile strength of 203-micron fibers increased from 500 to 800 ksi. Various physical observations are used to develop mechanistic models of oxidation, contraction, and the formation of new flaws in the boron sheath at contractions greater than 0.3%.

Description: The application of NASA earth resource survey technology to resource management and environmental protection in Michigan was investigated. Remote sensing techniques to aid Michigan government agencies were applied in the following activities: (1) land use inventory and management, (2) great lakes shorelands protection and management, (3) wetlands protection and management, and (4) soil survey. In addition, information was disseminated on remote sensing technology, and advice and assistance was provided to a number of users.

Description: Some of the information concerning soils that a multispectral scanner system may provide is discussed, and a practical approach for realizing this potential is suggested. Some reflectance and emittance characteristics of soil surfaces are reviewed, and the feasibility of selectively enhancing contrasts associated with differing soil conditions is demonstrated. The simplicity of the proposed ratio technique, its relative economy, and the compatibility of the image output with conventional survey methods commends it for consideration as an operational method.
