    Description: Highlights of recent Stanford University VLF research in the Antarctic include new observations of wave-induced particle precipitation and controlled experiments on nonlinear wave growth phenomena. Higher-than-expected levels of burst precipitation have been discovered inside the plasmasphere, near L = 2, using subionospheric signal perturbations called 'Trimpi events'. Studies of burst precipitation have been extended to the region poleward of the plasmapause using the Siple transmitter signal as a waveguide probe. Experiments on the 'coherent wave instability', using the amplitude and frequency modulation capability of the new Siple transmitter, have produced exciting new results. Examples are: (1) better definition of the power threshold for the stimulation of temporal wave growth, (2) generation of strong sidebands by unamplified 'beat' waves and (3) generation of chorus-like elements within a band of simulated hiss. Using a new digital processing technique developed at Stanford, new features of the phase behavior of growing waves have been found. Opportunities for extending these experiments are discussed.

    Description: Preliminary results of observations by the Japanese magnetospheric satellite Jikiken (EXOS-B) of Siple transmissions and VLF emissions triggered by the Siple signals are reviewed. The experiments discussed were carried out in July, August, and September of 1979 and in December 1979 and January 1980. Only four events concentrated within the period from August 14 to 18 were found in which triggered emissions were associated with Siple transmissions. The electron distributions observed on the equatorial crossing passes, when Siple triggered emissions were detected, suggest that the cyclotron resonance condition is satisfied for Siple signals and electrons of energy around 1 keV or less, provided the interaction region is inside the plasmapause. It is noted that if these emissions were generated outside the plasmapause, electron energies much higher than 10 keV would be necessary for the cyclotron interaction, which were above the range of the measurements. For the high latitude passes of August 14 and 17, the electron fluxes were found to be very small.

    Description: Recent ground-based stimulation and observations of ionospheric and magnetospheric phenomena are reported. The studies included amplification and emission generation by coherent ducted whistler mode signals in the magnetosphere, recipitation of radiation belt particles by the injection of VLF waves from ground-based sources, spectral broadening of the VLF signals during ionospheric propagation and the generation of ELF/VLF signals by HF heating of the auroral electrojet. The capabilities of controlled stimulation of the local terrestrial magnetic field environment provides the means for further investigations into the processes of energy exchange between waves and radiation belt particles and the interrelationships of the exchange with the energy coupling between the magnetosphere and ionosphere.

    Description: Rapid phase perturbations of subionospherically propagating VLF/LF signals are associated with lightning-generated whistlers which propagate in the magnetosphere. The perturbations, called 'Trimpi events' or 'Trimpi effects' after their discoverer, are attributed to alterations in the earth-ionosphere waveguide caused by localized enhancements in the ionospheric D region. These enhancements are produced by bursts of high-energy electrons which are precipitated out of the earth's radiation belts by the whistler waves. The present paper has the objective to present and discuss new evidence of whistler-associated phase perturbations of subionospheric signals. Events of this type, called phase Trimpi's were first reported by Lohrey and Kaiser (1979). Attention is given to occurrence statistics in terms of the seasonal distribution and hourly rate of events, possible effects on global VLF/LF navigation, and an interpretive model.

    Description: The EXOS-B/Siple Station joint experiment on the triggering of VLF emissions by man-made signals causing some form of wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere is presented, and results concerning wave-particle correlations are reported. In situ measurements of both energetic electron flux and VLF waves were made near the meridian connecting Siple Station, Antarctica with Roberval, Quebec, Canada in campaigns during July through September, 1979 and December 1979 through January 1980 at times of VLF transmission from Siple. Strong observed signals were found to be well correlated with a pancake pitch angle distribution of 0.3 to 6.9-keV electrons, and to exhibit a positive linear growth rate. Artificially stimulated emissions were observed to be accompanied by large electron fluxes in all energy channels in the equatorial interaction region, although the measured pitch angle distribution was not highly anisotropic. Results may be interpreted by the amplification of Siple signals by the cyclotron instability due to high pitch angle anisotropy (pancake distribution) and the triggering of emissions in the presence of high electron fluxes with some anisotropy and a sufficiently strong signal.

    Description: Experiments on wave-particle interactions using VLF whistler-mode waves injected into the magnetosphere from Antartica are described. The injected signals are single-frequency coherent waves whose amplitudes and frequencies may be changed slowly with time, or else two or more coherent wave trains transmitted simultaneously to determine the nature of the response to multifrequency excitation. The waves may be amplified 30 dB or more and may trigger intense emissions having bandwidths that vary from a few to several hundred Hertz. In most cases significant growth and triggering occur only when the driving signal is essentially monochromatic (bandwidth 10 Hz). If two frequencies are transmitted simultaneously the signal at the lower frequency tends to be suppressed by 20 dB or more. These results are interpreted in terms of a feedback interaction between the waves and counter-streaming cyclotron resonant electrons in a region several hundred wavelengths long, centered on the magnetic equator.

    Description: Harmonic radiation from electrical power transmission lines in the range of a few kHz leaks into the magnetosphere and stimulates a coherent wave instability, resulting in strong amplification of the input waves and the generation of free-running emissions. A description is given of some recent observational results that provide new information on the power line radiation (PLR) phenomenon. It is pointed out that PLR stimulates many subtle and complex wave-particle interactions in the magnetosphere that are similar to those simulated by controlled transmitter signals. These interactions undoubtedly affect both wave and particle environments in the magnetosphere. However, a quantitative assessment of their importance is not possible until further information becomes available.

    Description: A simple nonlinear feedback model is presented to explain VLF wave growth and emission triggering observed in VLF transmission experiments. The model is formulated in terms of the interaction of electrons with a slowly varying wave in an inhomogeneous medium as in an unstable feedback amplifier with a delay line; constant frequency oscillations are generated on the magnetic equator, while risers and fallers are generated on the downstream and upstream sides of the equator, respectively. Quantitative expressions are obtained for the stimulated radiation produced by energy exchanged between energetic electrons and waves by Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance, and feedback between the stimulated radiation and the phase bunched currents is incorporated in terms of a two-port discrete time model. The resulting model is capable of explaining the observed temporal growth and saturation effects, phase advance, retardation or frequency shift during growth in the context of a single parameter depending on the energetic particle distribution function, as well as pretermination triggering.

    Description: Coherent variable-frequency signals (ramps) extending from 1 to 8 kHz, injected into the magnetosphere from Siple Station, Antarctica (L=4.3), exhibit upper and lower cutoffs when received at the conjugate station, Roberval, Quebec. Ramp group delay measurements and ionospheric sounding data are used to determine the cold plasma density and L shell of the propagation path. Relationships among f, df/dt, and the 'phase equator' for gyroresonance are calculated using second-order resonance equations generalized to relativistic electrons. The concept thereby introduced is used to develop a diagnostic technique which, for an assumed g(alpha)(v exp -n) electron distribution, provides an estimate of the energy dependence n. Additional aspects of the magnetospheric response to ramp injection, such as emission triggering, curvature due to dispersion, and amplitude saturation, are discussed.
