    Notes: Abstract The design and development of a simulator for endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is described. The simulator consists of an interchangeable model of a human AAA based on computed tomography data and is produced by means of computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) techniques. The model has renal, iliac, and femoral arteries, and is perfused with a temperature controlled blood–analog fluid under simulated physiological flow conditions. “Fluoroscopic imaging” is simulated by a computerized imaging system that uses visible light. A movable video camera relays images in the antero–posterior and lateral planes of the AAA to a monitor. The imaging system allows “arteriography” and “road-mapping” to be performed so as to facilitate accurate deployment of endovascular stent-grafts. The system has been used for teaching and demonstrating endovascular techniques to clinicians, as well as the evaluation of new stent-graft devices. Its successful incorporation into endovascular workshops has demonstrated its role in the training of clinicians in endovascular repair of AAA. © 1998 Biomedical Engineering Society.     Description: Approximately 17.4 km of high-resolution reflection data were acquired along an east-west radius of the Manson Impact Structure (MIS) to delineate the shallow (upper 300 m) subsurface structural configuration. The geometry of the shallow structure is poorly known due to a 30-90 m thick Pleistocene till cover. The resolution of the new seismic data is roughly 5-10 times that of existing Vibroseis data. Data quality varies rapidly along the line from exceptional to poor, due primarily to velocity variations associated with the geological complexity of the area. Preliminary results indicate subsurface structural blocks previously envisioned to be several hundreds of meters in size are actually an order of magnitude smaller and more complex. A seismogram-by-seismogram analysis is necessary to confidently identify intricate stratigraphic and structural relationships seen on preliminary CDP sections, as numerous faults, diffractions, and complicated reflection patterns create potential pitfalls.

    Description: SEPAC (Space Experiments with Particle Accelerators) flew on Spacelab 1 (SL 1) in November and December 1983. SEPAC is a joint U.S.-Japan investigation of the interaction of electron, plasma, and neutral beams with the ionosphere, atmosphere and magnetosphere. It is scheduled to fly again on Atlas 1 in August 1990. On SL 1, SEPAC used an electron accelerator, a plasma accelerator, and neutral gas source as active elements and an array of diagnostics to investigate the interactions. For Atlas 1, the plasma accelerator will be replaced by a plasma contactor and charge collection devices to improve vehicle charging meutralization. This paper describes the SEPAC instrumentation in detail for the SL 1 and Atlas 1 flights and includes a bibliography of SEPAC papers.

    Description: Tasks performed in the development of an ice nucleus generator which, within the facility concept of the ACPL, would provide a test aerosol suitable for a large number and variety of potential experiments are described. The impact of Atmospheric Cloud Physics Laboratory scientific functional requirements on ice nuclei generation and characterization subsystems was established. Potential aerosol generating systems were evaluated with special emphasis on reliability, repeatability and general suitability for application in Spacelab. Possible contamination problems associated with aerosol generation techniques were examined. The ice nucleating abilities of candidate test aerosols were examined and the possible impact of impurities on the nucleating abilities of those aerosols were assessed as well as the relative merits of various methods of aerosol size and number density measurements.
