Notizen: New data on the dendritic growth and microstructure of ice crystals in quiescent pure water are reported for small subcoolings of 0.035 K 〈ΔT〈1.000 K, where thermal or natural convection is prevalent. Accurate and systematic measurements of the growth velocity VG and the tip radii of the edge and basal planes R1 and R2 were made as functions of time. The central point of this work is that with the harmonic mean of the tip radii Rm as the lengthscale, the intensity of natural convection can be correlated accurately by using the thermal convection analogy, Gr = Re2. On this basis, natural convection has a crucial effect on dendritic growth of ice at ΔT〈0.35 K, the region of subcooling in which the tip of the dendrite splits consistently. The experiments show that the morphological stability parameter C* is independent of subcooling and equals 0.075, when the lengthscale is Rm. With the observed values of R1 and R2, the aspect ratio is 28, and the growth velocity for small ΔT is significantly higher than that predicted by the conduction theory of Horvay and Cahn (1961). Thus, the effect of convection on the growth of ice crystals is more important as the subcooling decreases.Moving boundary solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations for the dendritic growth of an elliptical paraboloid were obtained here with the Stokes flow approximation. Experimental observations of the quantities, VG, R1, and R2, agree well with predictions of this theory when Gr=Rem2 is based on Rm. In contrast, if convection is neglected in the theory, it does not agree with the experiments and the difference increases significantly as the subcooling is decreased.

Notizen: The behavior of type-304 stainless steel in a forced-convection closed-loop lithium system was investigated over a wide range of temperatures and velocities. Fundamental information concerning the mechanism for mass transport has been obtained by examining solution and deposition effects along flat plates. The rate-determining process for solution is transport from the solid to the interface, whereas deposition rates are liquid-phase controlled.Liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients were correlated with a maximum deviation of approximately 15% by the use of von Kàrmàn's analysis of the turbulent boundary layer along a flat plate, combined with the Chilton-Colburn empirical modification of the Schmidt group. In contrast no adequate model is available for the prediction of solution rate constants which must be determined experimentally. Mean values of the solution rate constants ranged from 0.154 to 0.750 × 10-5 cm./sec. at temperatures from 510° to 612°C. These values are on the order of 103 smaller than corresponding liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients.

Notizen: A continuous velocity distribution is derived which is based on an arbitrary modification of Prandtl's mixing length expression. The resulting velocity distribution agrees well with experiments for transition and fully developed turbulent flow throughout the entire cross section of the conduit. Furthermore the mixing length expression applies to parallel flow in smooth circular tubes and between infinite parallel plates with the same set of constants.

Notizen: The problem of mass transfer with nonequilibrium at, and significant convection across, the interface has been studied by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The inner solution for small values of t or z/Um was found in terms of fk functions which were obtained in closed analytical form. The outer solution for large values of t or z/Um was found in terms of gk functions which had to be determined numerically. With these solutions, calculation of concentratration distributions or instantaneous rates of mass transfer is straightforward, but determination of the total amount of mass transfer as a function of time is complicated by the lack of an intersection wherein the inner and outer solutions overlap and converge. To avoid the need for graphical interpolation and integration of the interfacial concentration as a function of time to obtain the total mass transferred, the constant of integration M1 is found to be (-kγ\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \sqrt \pi $\end{document}/2h) by assuming that the ratio of mass transferred with an equilibrium interface to that with a nonequilibrium interface is independent of whether or not Vy convection is negligible in the system as t → ∞.The effect of a nonequilibrium interface is greatest for small t in unsteady systems and z/Um in steady state systems. This occurs because the departure from their equilibrium values of the interfacial concentrations of the phases in contact is greatest when they are first brought into contact. The larger the interfacial mass transfer coefficient α, the smaller is the time required for the interfacial concentrations to achieve their equilibrium values.Other things being equal, the rate of mass transfer is greatest when the driving force xA*-xA0 is greatest. Since the departure from equilibrium at the interface is greatest for small values of time, it follows that nonequilibrium interfacial phenomena can be observed most easily in systems where the rate of mass transfer is high. This is also the case when one cannot neglect the effect of finite velocity at the interface which is shown in the present work to be a significant effect. The method of analysis can be used to study a variety of problems in addition to the specific system considered here. In particular, both batch and flow reverse osmosis problems can be attacked by the present approach.

Notizen: Convective diffusion in laminar flows which develop from rest and in the velocity entrance region of tubes, is studied. Criteria for the validity of the simple dispersion model are established by comparison of analytical results with numerical experiments. It is found that the extent of dispersion is less in developing velocity fields than in those which are fully developed. This occurs because dispersion is enhanced by differences in the velocity of the fluid particles on a plane perpendicular to the main direction of flow. Such differences are greatest when the flow is fully developed.

Notizen: The effect of dissipation and compression work on the eddy conductivity calculated from experimental temperature distribution data for gases is examined in detail, and it is shown that these effects are significant even in relatively low Reynolds number flows, say greater than 30,00. The inclusion of dissipation and compression work in the energy equation for gaseous flows is shown to lead to the determination of symmetrical eddy diffusivities from experimental data.
