    Beschreibung: Important issues involved in working with complex geometries are discussed. Approaches taken to address complex geometry issues in the McDonnell Aircraft Computational Grid System and related geometry processing tools are discussed. The efficiency of acquiring a suitable geometry definition, the need to manipulate the geometry, and the time and skill level required to generate the grid while preserving geometric fidelity are discussed.

    Knowledge-based critiquing of graphical user interfaces with CHIMES (1994)

    Beschreibung: CHIMES is a critiquing tool that automates the process of checking graphical user interface (GUI) designs for compliance with human factors design guidelines and toolkit style guides. The current prototype identifies instances of non-compliance and presents problem statements, advice, and tips to the GUI designer. Changes requested by the designer are made automatically, and the revised GUI is re-evaluated. A case study conducted at NASA-Goddard showed that CHIMES has the potential for dramatically reducing the time formerly spent in hands-on consistency checking. Capabilities recently added to CHIMES include exception handling and rule building. CHIMES is intended for use prior to usability testing as a means, for example, of catching and correcting syntactic inconsistencies in a larger user interface.

    Modula-2*: An extension of Modula-2 for highly parallel programs (1989)

    Beschreibung: Parallel programs should be machine-independent, i.e., independent of properties that are likely to differ from one parallel computer to the next. Extensions are described of Modula-2 for writing highly parallel, portable programs meeting these requirements. The extensions are: synchronous and asynchronous forms of forall statement; and control of the allocation of data to processors. Sample programs written with the extensions demonstrate the clarity of parallel programs when machine-dependent details are omitted. The principles of efficiently implementing the extensions on SIMD, MIMD, and MSIMD machines are discussed. The extensions are small enough to be integrated easily into other imperative languages.

    Measurement of Local Heat Transfer Coefficients for Flow of Hydrogen and Helium in a Smooth Tube at High Surface to Fluid Bulk Temperature Ratios (1962)

    Beschreibung: Local values of heat transfer coefficients have been measured experimentally for helium and hydrogen gas flowing through an electrically heated inconel tube. The experiment was conducted primarily to determine the effect on the heat transfer coefficient of a large density change, radially, in the heat transfer fluid. This large density change was accomplished with relatively high surface temperatures as compared to fluid bulk temperatures or more commonly referred to as high surface to fluid bulk temperature ratio. The large temperature ratio was achieved by precooling the gas with liquid nitrogen. Data were measured for local values of surface to fluid bulk temperature ratios up to 4.5, Reynolds numbers in the turbulent flow region, surface temperatures up to 2300 R, heat flux up to 1,600,000 Btu/(hr)(sq ft) and length to diameter ratio of 250. A comparison of this data with the conventional heat transfer correlation equation (Dittus-Boelter eq.) is shown on a curve of Nusselt number divided by Prandtl number versus the Reynolds number. The gas properties were evaluated at the film temperature and the Reynolds number was modified by evaluating the velocity term at the fluid bulk temperature and the density at the film temperature.

    Beschreibung: BWB Aircraft with embedded engines and BLI inlets offer attractive advantages in terms of reduced noise from engines and increased range and fuel economy. The BLI inlet produces inlet distortion patterns that can reduce fan performance and stall margin, and can produce undesirable forced responses. Knowledge of the dynamic response of fan flow when subjected to flow distortions of the type produced by BLI inlets is important for the design of distortion tolerant fans. This project is investigating fan response to flow distortion by measuring the response of the fan of a JT15D engine to a flow pattern following the results of the NASA Inlet A BLI wind tunnel tests.

    Notizen: A modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state is developed in which the two parameters are expressed as functions of temperature. The critical values for the two constants in the equation are completely determined by the values of the critical properties of the gas. The optimum values of the constants for each isotherm (Z vs. P) are found, followed by a curve-fitting routine that obtains the constants as functions of temperature. The resulting equation of state predicts experimental helium compressibility data to within an average of 0.90% absolute error for data in the range 0 〈 pressure ≤ 700 atm., 5.26°K. ≤ temperature ≤ 1,500°K. For hydrogen, the prediction is to within an average of 0.79% absolute error for temperatures from 34° to 600°K. and pressures up to 2,900 atm.

    Notizen: Heat transfer rates of both heating and cooling for dissociating nitrogen dioxide gas were experimentally measured under turbulent pipe-flow conditions. The range of the average Reynolds numbers for which these measurements were made was from 6,700 to 22,000. Thermal flux at the inside surfaces of the tubes ranged from 300 to 8,400 B.t.u./hr.-sq. ft. for heating and cooling. Wall temperatures of the heater section were varied from 100° to 400°F. and those of the cooler section were varied from 70° to 140°F. Mixed mean bulk gas temperatures for both heating and cooling were in the range 72° to 190°F. Radial velocity and temperature profiles were measured at various longitudinal positions in the heater section.For this equilibrium gas mixture heat transfer coefficients as high as 14 times those for the gas under frozen equilibrium conditions were obtained. Correlations which should be generally applicable to equilibrium reacting systems have been determined from the experimental data.
