    Description: As a result of CFD analysis and remachining of the nozzle, the flow quality of the Mach 10 Hypersonic Wind Tunnel at NAL Chofu, Japan was improved. The subsequent test results validated the CFD analytical predictions by NASA and MHL.

    Description: Flexible heat pipes of an improved type are fabricated as layers of different materials laminated together into vacuum- tight sheets or tapes. In comparison with prior flexible heat pipes, these flexible heat pipes are less susceptible to leakage. Other advantages of these flexible heat pipes, relative to prior flexible heat pipes, include high reliability and greater ease and lower cost of fabrication. Because these heat pipes are very thin, they are highly flexible. When coated on outside surfaces with adhesives, these flexible heat pipes can be applied, like common adhesive tapes, to the surfaces of heat sinks and objects to be cooled, even if those surfaces are curved.

    Description: The trapped vortex combustor (TVC) pioneered by Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL) is under consideration as an alternative to conventional gas turbine combustors. The TVC has demonstrated excellent operational characteristics such as high combustion efficiency, low NO(x) emissions, effective flame stabilization, excellent high-altitude relight capability, and operation in the lean-burn or rich burn-quick quench-lean burn (RQL) modes of combustion. It also has excellent potential for lowering the engine combustor weight. This performance at low to moderate combustor mach numbers has stimulated interest in its ability to operate at higher combustion mach number, and for aerospace, this implies potentially higher flight mach numbers. To this end, a lobed diffuser-mixer that enhances the fuel-air mixing in the TVC combustor core was designed and evaluated, with special attention paid to the potential shock system entering the combustor core. For the present investigation, the lobed diffuser-mixer combustor rig is in a full annular configuration featuring sixfold symmetry among the lobes, symmetry within each lobe, and plain parallel, symmetric incident flow. During hardware cold-flow testing, significant discrepancies were found between computed and measured values for the pitot-probe-averaged static pressure profiles at the lobe exit plane. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were initiated to determine whether the static pressure probe was causing high local flow-field disturbances in the supersonic flow exiting the diffuser-mixer and whether shock wave impingement on the pitot probe tip, pressure ports, or surface was the cause of the discrepancies. Simulations were performed with and without the pitot probe present in the modeling. A comparison of static pressure profiles without the probe showed that static pressure was off by nearly a factor of 2 over much of the radial profile, even when taking into account potential axial displacement of the probe by up to 0.25 in. (0.64 cm). Including the pitot probe in the CFD modeling and data interpretation lead to good agreement between measurement and prediction. Graphical inspection of the results showed that the shock waves impinging on the probe surface were highly nonuniform, with static pressure varying circumferentially among the pressure ports by over 10 percent in some cases. As part of the measurement methodology, such measurements should be routinely supplemented with CFD analyses that include the pitot probe as part of the flow-path geometry.

    Description: Results from Direct Numerical Simulations of temporal, supercritical mixing layers for two species systems are analyzed to elucidate species-specific turbulence aspects. The two species systems, O2/H2 and C7HG16/N2, have different thermodynamic characteristics; thus, although the simulations are performed at similar reduced pressure (ratio of the pressure to the critical pressure), the former system is dose to mixture ideality and has a relatively high solubility with respect to the latter, which exhibits strong departures from mixture ideality Due to the specified, smaller initial density stratification, the C7H16/N2 layers display higher growth and increased global molecular mixing as well as larger turbulence levels. However, smaller density gradients at the transitional state for the O2/H2 system indicate that on a local basis, the layer exhibits an enhanced mixing, this being attributed to the increased solubility and to mixture ideality. These thermodynamic features are shown to affect the irreversible entropy production (i.e. the dissipation), which is larger for the O2/H2 layer and is primarily concentrated in high density-gradient magnitude regions that are distortions of the initial density stratification boundary. In contrast, the regions of largest dissipation in the C7H16/N2 layer are located in high density-gradient magnitude regions resulting from the mixing of the two fluids.

    Description: Three flow regimes have been identified for gas-liquid flow in a microgravity environment: Bubble, Slug, and Annular. For the slug and annular flow regimes, the behavior observed in vertical upflow in normal gravity is similar to microgravity flow with a thin, symmetrical annular film wetting the tube wall. However, the motion and behavior of this film is significantly different between the normal and low gravity cases. Specifically, the liquid film will slow and come to a stop during low frequency wave motion or slugging. In normal gravity vertical upflow, the film has been observed to slow, stop, and actually reverse direction until it meets the next slug or wave.

    Description: An in-depth review of boundary-layer flow-separation control by a passive method using low-profile vortex generators is presented. The generators are defined as those with a device height between 10% and 50% of the boundary layer thickness. Key results are presented for several research efforts, all of which were performed within the past decade and a half where the majority of these works emphasize experimentation with some recent efforts on numerical simulations. Topics of discussion consist of both basic fluid dynamics and applied aerodynamics research. The fluid dynamics research includes comparative studies on separation control effectiveness as well as device-induced vortex characterization and correlation. The comparative studies cover the controlling of low-speed separated flows in adverse pressure gradient and supersonic shock-induced separation. The aerodynamics research includes several applications for aircraft performance enhancement and covers a wide range of speeds. Significant performance improvements are achieved through increased lift and/or reduced drag for various airfoils-low-Reynolds number, high-lift, and transonic-as well as highly swept wings. Performance enhancements for non-airfoil applications include aircraft interior noise reduction, inlet flow distortion alleviation inside compact ducts, and a more efficient overwing fairing. The low-profile vortex generators are best for being applied to applications where flow-separation locations are relatively fixed and the generators can be placed reasonably close upstream of the separation. Using the approach of minimal near-wall proturbances through substantially reduced device height, these devices can produce streamwise vortices just strong enough to overcome the separation without unnecessarily persisting within the boundary layer once the flow-control objective is achieved. Practical advantages of low-profile vortex generators, such as their inherent simplicity and low device drag, are demonstrated to be critically important for many applications as well.

    Description: Solid oxide electrolyzers, such as electrolysis cells utilizing yttria-stabilized zirconia, can produce oxygen from Mars atmospheric carbon dioxide and reject carbon monoxide and unreacted carbon dioxide in a separate stream. The oxygen-production process has been shown to be far more efficient if the high-pressure, unreacted carbon dioxide can be separated and recycled back into the feed stream. Additionally, the mass of the adsorption compressor can be reduced. Also, the carbon monoxide by-product is a valuable fuel for space exploration and habitation, with applications from fuel cells to production of hydrocarbons and plastics. In our research, we will design, construct, and test an innovative, robust, low mass, low power separation device that can recover carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide for Mars ISRU. Such fundamental process technology, involving gas-solid phase separation in a reduced gravitational environment, will help to enable Human Exploration and Development of Space. The separation device will be scaled to operate with a CO2 sorption compressor and a zirconia electrolysis device built at the NASA Ames Research Center and the University of Arizona, respectively.     Description: The need to identify spikes in the concentration of hazardous gases during countdowns to space shuttle launches has led Kennedy Space Center to acquire considerable expertise in the design, construction, and operation of special-purpose gas analyzers of mass-spectrometer type. If such devices could be miniaturized so as to fit in a small airborne package or backpack them their potential applications would include integrated vehicle health monitoring in later-generation space shuttles and in hazardous material detection in airports, to name two examples. The bulkiest components of such devices are vacuum pumps, particularly those that function in the low vacuum range. Now some pumps that operate in the high vacuum range (e.g. molecular-drag and turbomolecular pumps) are already small and rugged. The present work aims to determine whether, on physical grounds, one may or may not adopt the molecular-drag principle to the low-vacuum range (in which case viscous-drag principle is the appropriate term). The deliverable of the present effort is the derivation and justification of some key formulas and calculation methods for the preliminary design of a single-spool, spiral-channel viscous-drag pump.

    Description: The CFD modeling used has produced reasonably good global upper-surface pressure coefficient comparisons with measured flight data at both transonic and subsonic speeds at the angles of attack presented. Boundary layer comparisons showed the profiles to be reasonably well predicted inboard and under the primary vortex system. However, the secondary vortex profile was not well predicted either at the anticipated separation point or under the secondary vortex. Moreover, the flight data showed there to be a vortex/boundary-layer interaction that occurred in the vicinity of the secondary vortex. The spanwise distribution of local skin friction measured data was reasonably well predicted, especially away from the wing leading-edge. Lastly, predicted and measured flight-pressures, as well as flight-image data, for the F-16XL-1 airplane are now available via the World Wide Web.

    Description: Surface and off-surface flow visualization techniques were used to visualize the three-dimensional vortex flows on the F-106 aircraft with vortex flaps installed. Results at angles of attack between 9 degrees to 18 degrees and Mach numbers from 0.3 to 0.9 are presented. A smoke flow vapor screen technique was used to document leading-edge vortex paths and sizes, while an oil flow technique was employed to provide detailed information on reattachment and separation line locations and other flow details. Results were obtained for two vortex flap deflection angles, 30 degrees and 40 degrees. Flow visualization revealed the existence of a multiple vortex system that had not previously been seen in subscale tests or predicted for this configuration. The vortex flap generated a leading-edge vortex system that reattached near the flap hinge over a wide angle of attack range. In addition to the primary vortex, flow visualization revealed the presence of several distinct vortices which traced a path from the vortex flap and then over the wing.
