Description: The end of communism opened up a life of economic uncertainty in the Eastern Bloc. And that, say some social scientists, may be exerting a deadly effect on residents, whose high expectations that their lives would improve were quickly dashed by the bumpy transition to a market economy. Disillusionment led to stress and depression, and depression was a harbinger of death.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Stone, R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2000 Jun 9;288(5472):1732-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10877687" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Natural killer (NK) cells are lymphocytes that can be distinguished from T and B cells through their involvement in innate immunity and their lack of rearranged antigen receptors. Although NK cells and their receptors were initially characterized in terms of tumor killing in vitro, we have determined that the NK cell activation receptor, Ly-49H, is critically involved in resistance to murine cytomegalovirus in vivo. Ly-49H requires an immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM)-containing transmembrane molecule for expression and signal transduction. Thus, NK cells use receptors functionally resembling ITAM-coupled T and B cell antigen receptors to provide vital innate host defense.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Brown, M G -- Dokun, A O -- Heusel, J W -- Smith, H R -- Beckman, D L -- Blattenberger, E A -- Dubbelde, C E -- Stone, L R -- Scalzo, A A -- Yokoyama, W M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 May 4;292(5518):934-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Rheumatology Division, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO 63110, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11340207" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Familial juvenile polyposis is an autosomal dominant disease characterized by a predisposition to hamartomatous polyps and gastrointestinal cancer. Here it is shown that a subset of juvenile polyposis families carry germ line mutations in the gene SMAD4 (also known as DPC4), located on chromosome 18q21.1, that encodes a critical cytoplasmic mediator in the transforming growth factor-beta signaling pathway. The mutant SMAD4 proteins are predicted to be truncated at the carboxyl-terminus and lack sequences required for normal function. These results confirm an important role for SMAD4 in the development of gastrointestinal tumors.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Howe, J R -- Roth, S -- Ringold, J C -- Summers, R W -- Jarvinen, H J -- Sistonen, P -- Tomlinson, I P -- Houlston, R S -- Bevan, S -- Mitros, F A -- Stone, E M -- Aaltonen, L A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1998 May 15;280(5366):1086-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Surgery, University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, IA 52242, USA. james-howe@uiowa.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9582123" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder with a lifetime risk of about 1%, characterized by hallucinations, delusions and cognitive deficits, with heritability estimated at up to 80%. We performed a genome-wide association study of 3,322 European individuals with schizophrenia and 3,587 controls. Here we show, using two analytic approaches, the extent to which common genetic variation underlies the risk of schizophrenia. First, we implicate the major histocompatibility complex. Second, we provide molecular genetic evidence for a substantial polygenic component to the risk of schizophrenia involving thousands of common alleles of very small effect. We show that this component also contributes to the risk of bipolar disorder, but not to several non-psychiatric diseases.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3912837/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3912837/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉International Schizophrenia Consortium -- Purcell, Shaun M -- Wray, Naomi R -- Stone, Jennifer L -- Visscher, Peter M -- O'Donovan, Michael C -- Sullivan, Patrick F -- Sklar, Pamela -- 066717/Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- G0500791/Medical Research Council/United Kingdom -- G0800509/Medical Research Council/United Kingdom -- R01 MH074027/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- R01 MH077139/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- R01 MH080403/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- England -- Nature. 2009 Aug 6;460(7256):748-52. doi: 10.1038/nature08185.
