    Notes: Calcification of bioprosthetic heart valves fabricated from glutaraldehyde pretreated bovine pericardium or porcine aortic valves (PAV) is a frequent cause of the failure of these devices. Of all strategies considered thus far, only detergent preincubations using compounds such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) ingibited PAV bioprosthetic mineralization in circulatory sheep bioprosthetic valve replacements. The present study sought to characterize the mechanism of action of SDS preincubation. Results of transport and material characterization studies showed that SDS had a relatively high affinity for PAV, with a maximum uptake of 167.1 ± 6.8 μg SDS/mg tissue over 24 h at 37°C with a partition coefficient of 19.3. The PAV diffusion of SDS was 1.95 ± 0.35 10-6 cm2/sec. The principal effect of SDS on PAV was phospholipid extraction. The residual organic phospholipid extraction. The residual organic phosphate in the SDS pretreated tissue was 2.22 ± 0.72 nmol/mg tissue compared to the control untreated group with 18.52 ± 2.1 nmol/mg tissue. Incubations of PAV specimens in a 1% SDS solution for 24 h significantly inhibited calcification after 21 days in subdermal implants in 3-week-old male rats (PAV Ca2+ = 18.0 ± 11.8 μg/mg) compared to control (177.8 ± 6.0 μg/mg). In contrast, coimplants of 30% SDS silicone rubber polymers, for regional sustained SDS administration, did not impede PAV calcification in 21 day implants Ca2+ = 166.0 ± 14.0 μg/mg compared to the nondrug silicone matrix controls, (Ca2+ = 173.0 ± 6.6 μg/mg). Thus, we conclude that the mechanisms of SDS inhibition of PAV calcification is due to material effects which occur during preincubation, and is not facilitated by sustained SDS administration. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: Sex differences in the pattern and maturation of lateral asymmetries of the human brain have been recently found by a number of investigators, suggesting that sex-related factors may differentially affect the two sides of the body. In this study, asymmetries in the size of the two feet were strongly related to sex and handedness, right-handed males having larger right feet and right-handed females having larger left feet, the reverse being seen in non-right-handed individuals.     Notes: Fluid and solid dynamics inside and outside a stable elongated gas bubble in operating conditions corresponding to those of the channeling regime in a fluidized bed are described. It considers the prolate ellipsoid of revolution as a model of the bubble. The results of the analytical model show a significant increase of the fluid velocity inside the bubble with the growth of its relative height. The maximum values of the fluid velocities exist along the vertical axis of the bubble. For the limiting case of a spherical bubble, the fluid and gas performance, such as the existence of a surface of penetration outside the bubble boundaries and circulation zone inside the bubble, are in good agreement with the existing theory.

    Notes: One of the factors which reduces combustion efficiency in a fluidized-bed combustor is the elutriation of fine coal particles from the freeboard above the bed surface. To our knowledge, data about the real local flow behavior of the two-phase flow in the freeboard are lacking in the literature. This paper concerns the measurement of the gas and the elutriated particle velocities in the freeboard of a cold fluidized bed using Laser Doppler Anemometry. A special electronic system has been devised to record simultaneously the gas and particle velocities and to indicate the size of the particles. In this paper the apparatus and some preliminary measurements are reported. The most significant observation is that the gas velocity profiles exhibit minima near the bed center and maxima near the walls.

    Notes: The bubble eruption process was studied in two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) beds using a high-speed video system for flow visualization. The results show the existence of four different ejection mechanisms; one occurring with singlebubble eruptions in both 2D and 3D beds, two others occurring in 2D and 3D beds with two bubbles coalescing at the bed-free surface, and the fourth occurring only in 3D beds with bubbles coalescing at the bed surface.

    Notes: Small horizontal cylinders subliming to room air were vibrated in a vertical direction at 20 to 118 cycles/sec. Increases of up to 660% in the coefficient of mass transfer were thus obtained. The coefficient increased with both frequency and amplitude, the latter having the more pronounced effect. Results are correlated in terms of the stretched vibrational Reynolds number introduced in an earlier study and compared with the analogous case of natural convective heat transfer.

    Notes: The gases CO, CO2, and H2 were used as substrates in anaerobic fermentations producing organic acids. Various mixed bacterial sources were used, including sewage sludge digester effluent, rabbit feces, and soil. Nonsterile microorganism selection was carried out using CO2/H2 and CO/H2 as the primary carbon and energy sources. Cultures were grown in specially designed, high-pressure (to 70 psig) flasks. Methanogenic bacteria were eliminated from the cultures. Liquid products of the fermentations were acetic through caproic acids, with the even-numbered acids predominating. Carbon balances showed conclusively that acetic acid was formed from carbon contained in the CO or CO2 feed gas. Measurements made included rates of acid product formation, cell density, and degree of gas utilization. Limited characterization of the microorganisms was also performed. Production of organic acids by mixed culture inocula from CO2/H2 or CO/H2 had not been reported previously. Application of this work is to the production of organic chemicals from synthesis gas (SNG), produced by the gasification of fossil fuels (peat, lignite, and various ranks of coals), biomass (agricultural and forest residues, and various biomass crops grown expressly for energy recovery), and municipal solid waste.
