Description: Techniques and applications of algebraic grid generation are described. The techniques are univariate interpolations and transfinite assemblies of univariate interpolations. Because algebraic grid generation is computationally efficient, the use of interactive graphics in conjunction with the techniques is advocated. A flexible approach, which works extremely well in an interactive environment, called the control point form of algebraic grid generation is described. The applications discussed are three-dimensional grids constructed about airplane and submarine configurations.

Description: NASA IRTF reflectance spectra of unprecedented precision, obtained for the leading and trailing sides of Europa, are presently noted to no longer show the apparent absorptions seen in 1980 and 1985. It is presently suggested that if the weak absorptions seen in the 1980 and 1985 data are real, they may indicate the transient spectroscopic presence of a molecular component on Europa's trailing side that differs from the water ice known to be the dominant constituent of the surface.

Description: A lifting body was proposed as a candidate for the Assured Crew Return Vehicle (ACRV) which will serve as a crew rescue vehicle for the Space Station Freedom. The focus is on body surface definition, both surface and volume grid definition, and the computation of inviscid flow fields about the vehicle at wind tunnel conditions. Very good agreement is shown between the computed aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle at M(sub infinity) = 10 and those measured in wind tunnel tests at high Reynolds numbers.

Description: The solution method consists of three parts: a grid movement scheme; an unsteady Euler equation solver; and a temporal coupling routine that links the dynamic grid to the Euler solver. The grid movement scheme is an algebraic method containing grid controls that generate a smooth grid that resolves the severe solution gradients and the sharp transitions in the solution gradients. The temporal coupling is performed with a grid prediction correction procedure that is simple to implement and provides a grid that does not lag the solution in time. The adaptive solution method is tested by computing the unsteady inviscid solutions for a one dimensional shock tube and a two dimensional shock vortex iteraction.

Description: The new IR spectra presented for Triton exhibit the 2.3-micron methane band as well as Cruikshank et al.'s (1984) 2.15-micron spectral band. It is found on the basis of comparisons with methane ice spectra, and laboratory spectra of methane dissolved in liquid nitrogen, that the former band cannot be exclusively due to methane's presence. Also, the strength of the 2.3-micron band does not allow any obvious correlation with the satellite's orbital position in the new data set.

Description: Recent calculations of the energy balance of the Io plasma torus show that the observed UV and EUV radiation cannot be maintained solely via energy input by the ion pickup mechanism. Current theoretical models of the torus must be modified to include non-local energy input. It is argued that the required energy may be supplied by inward diffusion of energetic heavy ions with energies less than about 20 keV.
