Description: Need for lightweight materials as structural components for future space transportation systems stimulated development of systematic method for manufacturing a polyimide/graphite composite. Laminates manufactured by process are void-free, exhibit excellent thermo-oxidative stability up to 315 degrees C (600 degrees F) and are 40 percent lighter than aluminum. Process is precise, repeatable, and ideally suited for researchers and small-lot producers of composite materials.

Description: Equipment ideally suited for research and development of new sizing solutions. Designed expecially for applying thermoplastic sizing solutions to graphite tow consisting of 3,000 to 12,000 filaments per tow, but accommodates other solutions, filament counts, and materials other than graphite. Closed system containing highly volatile methylene chloride vapors. Also ventilation system directly over resin reservoir. Concept used to apply sizing compounds on fiber tows or yarn-type reinforcement materials used in composite technology. Sizing solutions consist of compounds compatible with thermosets as well as thermoplastics.

Description: Ordered qualitative test sequence, presented in flow chart form, permits identification of all common metallurgical elements and many high-temperature, stainless, high and low carbon, and tool steels within about 30 minutes. Identification is made from colors or specific reactions produced by the addition of standard chemical reagents.

Description: Four resin systems show improved properties after postcuring. Comparison of flexural properties made of pultrusions reinforced by Kevlar (or equivalent) aromatic polyamide and having constant fiber volume and varied matrices, pretreatments, and postcures. Objective of study to improve flexural properties of pultrusion reinforced with Kevlar (or equivalent). Advantages of using pultrusion process, over conventional hand-layup methods included higher production rates, low facility and labor requirements, and reduced manufacturing costs of advanced composites.
