Kurzfassung: Achieving zero hunger and food security is a top priority in the United Nations Development Goals (UNDGs). In an era characterized by high population growth and increasing pressure on agricultural systems, efficiency in the use of natural resources has become central to sustainable agricultural practices. Fundamentally speaking, eco-efficiency is about maximizing agricultural outputs, in terms of quantity and quality, using less land, water, nutrients, energy, labor, or capital. The concept of eco-efficiency involves both the ecological and economic aspects of sustainable agriculture. It is therefore essential to understand the interaction of ecosystem constituents within the extensive agricultural landscape, as well as farmers’ economic needs. This book examines the latest eco-efficient practices used in agro-systems. Drawing upon research and examples from around the world, it offers an up-to-date overview, together with insights into directly applicable approaches for poly-cropping systems and landscape-scale management to improve the stability of agricultural production systems, helping achieve food security. The book will be of interest to educators, researchers, climate change scientists, capacity builders and policymakers alike. It can also be used as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate courses on agriculture, forestry, soil science, and the environmental sciences.

Kurzfassung: This book covers topics that addresses the global environmental issues, their challenges, and mitigation strategies for sustainable development. Some of the major challenges global environment is facing currently are global warming induced climate change because of which various extreme weather events such as flood, drought, cyclone, forest fires have increased. Industrialization with urbanization and human anthropogenic activities have caused detrimental effect on the environment resulting in environmental pollution (air and water pollution), deforestation, degradation of ecosystems, soil erosion, ground water depletion, drinking water scarcity, biodiversity loss, depletion of fossil fuels, etc. Therefore, it has become utmost necessary to switch to significant lifestyle stages along with conservation of natural resources for a sustainable environment. Sustainable environment may be defined as the practice of responsibly managing natural resources and protect overall ecosystem to support health and well-being of present and future generations. One of the major environment sustainability is the use of renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass which will reduce environmental pollution and also minimize resource misuse. At the same time, crop rotation, solid waste management, water treatment, wastewater treatment are some of the sustainable practices we must carry out for a sustainable environment. Hope, the content of the book gives an overview of recent developments, knowledge gaps related to new research areas related to environment and their future prospects.

Kurzfassung: This edited book summarizes numerous research studies on remote sensing and GIS of natural resource management for the Himalaya region done by Indian Institutions and Universities over the last decade. It gives an overview of hydrometeorological studies on Himalayan water resources and addresses concerns in the development of water resources in this region, which is dealing with an increased pressure in population, industrialization and economic development. While the source of some of the major rivers of India are found in the Himalayas, the glaciers and water bodies in the region are continuously shrinking leading to a depletion of water and deterioration of water quality. This is affecting a population of up to 2.5 billion people. The ecosystems have been under threat due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, expansion of agriculture and settlement, overexploitation of natural resources, habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, mining, construction of roads and large dams, and unplanned tourism. Spaceborne remote sensing with its ability to provide synoptic and repetitive coverage has emerged as a powerful tool for assessment and monitoring of the Himalayan resources and phenomena. This work serves as a resource to students, researchers, scientists, professionals, and policy makers both in India and on a global level. .
