Notizen: Abstract Grafting experiments were used to investigate the relative roles of strength of flowering signal(s) and competence of buds to respond to flowering signal(s) in the development of photoperiodic and day-neutral species of Nicotiana. At the time of commitment to floral development, a flowering signal (inhibitory or promotive) could reach a critical level or terminal buds could gain competence to perceive and-or respond to an existing signal. The latter hypothesis appears to be true for day-neutral N. tabacum L. cv. Wisconsin 38, while signal strength appears to be a more critical factor for long-day N. silvestris L. Nicotiana tabacum and N. silvestris differ in terms of signal intensity at anthesis of the terminal flower. Stocks of N. silvestris promote more rapid flowering in seedling scions of both genotypes. Terminal buds of seedlings of both genotypes have the same competence to respond to the signal affecting floral development. The competence of the terminal bud of both species to respond to this signal(s) changes as a function of age.

Beschreibung: Microbiological techniques are under study with a view to the identification of viable microorganisms in liquid cultures, improve the identification of stressed organisms, and determine the biocidal activity of iodine and other chemicals on isolates from recycled water. A quality-assurance program has been implemented to validate data employed in making decisions concerning engineering and human health and safety. Analytical laboratory refinements will strongly aid the development of environmental control and life-support systems.

Beschreibung: Data from routine ozone monitoring in southeastern Wisconsin and limited monitoring of the Milwaukee area by the Environmental Protection Agency are examined. Hourly averages as high as 30 pphm have been recorded in southeastern Wisconsin, and high readings have been reported in rural regions throughout the state. The observations indicate that photochemical oxidants and their nitrogen oxide and reactive hydrocarbon precursers advect from Chicago and northern Indiana into southeastern Wisconsin. There is evidence that synoptic-scale transport of photochemical oxidants occurs, allowing the pollution of entire anticyclones. These results cast doubt on the validity of the Air Quality Control Regions established by amendment to the Clean Air Act of 1970.

Beschreibung: Examples of the application of various methods for characterizing samples for alcohols, fatty acids, detergents, and volatile/semivolatile basic, neutral, and phenolic acid contaminants are presented. Data, applications, and interpretations are given for a variety of methods including sample preparation/cleanup procedures, ion chromatography, and gas chromatography with various detectors. Summaries of the major organic contaminants that contribute to the total organic carbon content are presented.
