    Notizen: Fourier analysis of numerical accuracy has traditionally concentrated on the propagation behaviour of various methods. When systems of equations in more than one unknown are involved, analysis of propagation accuracy alone is shown to be incomplete. A distribution factor is introduced to complement the Fourier analysis in these cases, and application of the concept to two problems commonly encountered in the water resources field is demonstrated. The distribution factor is shown to provide important information which cannot be obtained from the customary analysis of propagation accuracy.

    Notizen: The standard isoparametric transformation for finite element analysis is shown to be only a special case of a more general transformation which allows for flexibility in locating side and interior element nodes. Side nodes positioned at the same relative distance from corner nodes in both local and global space, and interior nodes positioned such that they do not affect the Jacobian of the co-ordinate transformation, provide improved accuracy over nodes positioned locally without regard for the global configuration. This concept is demonstrated in the context of two-dimensional quadratic quadrilateral isoparametrics, but is also applicable to higher orders and dimensions. In the test cases examined, the new formulation provides a reduction in error of up to three orders of magnitude and also provides accurate solutions for nodal placements which are not allowed using the standard transformations.

    Notizen: A modified isoparametric co-ordinate transformation is developed for the case of Lagrange cubic finite elements. This modified transformation produces significant improvements in solution accuracy while eliminating troublesome aspects of the standard isoparametric mapping. In particular, zero Jacobians in the standard transformation, which can occur in elements having non-uniform node spacing, are completely eliminated with the new transformation. Within the analysis, the range of node locations for which the standard transformation is valid (the Jacobian does not vanish) is determined. The treatment of curved sides is discussed and illustrated. Example calculations using two-dimensional serendipity elements show that the new transformation provides solutions that are as much as several orders of magnitude more accurate than those computed using the standard formulation.

The method used standard isoparametric interpolation functions and a predictor method for tracing element contour lines. The method presented here extends the previous work by using a predictor-corrector method to trace element contour lines, thereby making the contouring algorithm more accurate.

    Notizen: In convection heat transfer problems, it is convenient to solve the governing differential equations by using straightforward marching techniques for numerical integration. However, the boundary layer equations in these heat transfer problems are not of the initial value type even though they are parabolic equations. Consequently marching techniques are not successful until correct initial values are known. A means of determining these initial values is presented herein. Selected optimization methods are utilized in conjunction with marching integration techniques to solve third- and fourth-order ordinary differential equations which have three unknown initial boundary conditions. Two optimization methods, one deterministic and the other non-deterministic in nature, are used both independently and in combination as determined by the particular circumstances. Two applications are used to demonstrate the technique and comparison is made with existing solutions.

    Notizen: The integral equations which arise from application of the Galerkin-finite element scheme to the convective diffusion equation are examined to illustrate how this method represents differential equations. The formulae obtained are effectively spatial averages of standard finite difference equations written at a node. The truncation error in the finite element solution at a node is obtained for various nodal configurations.

    Notizen: In the last decade or so finite element techniques have been applied with increased frequency to contaminant transport problems. Whereas most of the attention has focused on finite element approximations of spatial derivatives, standard finite difference techniques are generally used for approximation of the time derivative. Such an approach yields a scheme which is at best second order correct in time. In this study several higher order approximations of the time derivative are developed and analyzed using a finite difference approximation, and Galerkin-type finite element approximations in conjunction with several sets of basis functions. Results obtained with the different schemes exhibit significant improvements in the numerical solution of the convective-dispersive equation.
