    Notes: Interactive vortex shedding in the multiply connected domain formed by a pair of circular cylinders is analysed by the FEM-FDM blending technique. The vorticity-streamfunction formulation is used to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations at Re = 100, with the time-dependent wall streamfunctions determined from the pressure constraint condition and the far-field streamfunctions from the integral series formula developed earlier by the authors. The standard Galerkin finite element method is used in the relatively small FEM subdomain and the finite difference method based on the general co-ordinate system in the rest of the flow domain. Symmetric, antisymmetric and asymmetric wake patterns are obtained confirming the earlier experimental findings. The bistable nature of the asymmetric vortex shedding as well as the intermittent drifting from one status to the other between symmetric and antisymmetric wake patterns are reported.

    Notes: A three-dimensional model has been developed to compute the thermofluid transport within a discharge arctube. The model has proved very useful for guiding the choice of design parameters to optimize the lamp performance. However, uncertainties exist with respect to quantitative aspects of the physical model, especially those related to radiation heat transfer. In the present work a grid refinement procedure and an adaptive grid method are used to improve the quantitative accuracy of the model and to help improve the physical modelling. The adaptive grid method, based on the multiple one-dimensional equidistribution concept, can responsively redistribute the grids to optimize the grid resolutions. Adaptive grid solutions modify the predicted maximum gas temperature, the buoyancy-induced convection strength, the location of the high-temperature core, and the wall temperature profiles. The adaptive grid solutions show more consistent trends when compared to the measurements. On the basis of the quantitatively more definite information, adjustments can be made with regard to the uncertainties of the physical model.

    Notes: A class of shock-capturing Petrov-Galerkin finite element methods that use high-order non-oscillatory interpolations is presented for the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations. Modified eigenvalues which employ total variation diminishing (TVD), total variation bounded (TVB) and essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) mechanisms are introduced into the weighting functions. A one-pass Euler explicit transient algorithm with lumped mass matrix is used to integrate the equations. Numerical experiments with Burgers' equation, the Riemann problem and the two-blast-wave interaction problem are presented. Results indicate that accurate solutions in smooth regions and sharp and non-oscillatory solutions at discontinuities are obtainable even for strong shocks.

    Notes: A generalized finite volume method that can solve the Euler equations for the stator and rotor parts of stage flow in similar formulations is presented. The method consists of a new moving grid finite volume formulation applied to the rotor region and the existing fixed grid finite volume method used in the stator region, with the data transfer made by an interpolation procedure at the sliding surface in between. The accuracy of the method has been demonstrated on a simple cascade flow before the time-dependent compressor stage flow is fully investigated. The transonic stator-rotor flow interaction is elucidated within the inviscid and rotational flow limit.

    Notes: A numerical analysis is presented for the unsteady compressible laminar boundary layer driven by a compression or expansion wave. Approximate or series expansion methods have been used for the problems because of the characteristics of the governing equations, such as non-linearity, coupling with the thermal boundary layer equation and initial conditions. Here a transformation of the governing equations and the numerical linearization technique are introduced to deal with the difficulties. First, the governing equations are transformed for the initial conditions by Howarth and semisimilarity variables. These transformations reduce the number of independent variables from three to two and the governing equations from partial to ordinary differential equations at the initial point. Next, the numerical linearization technique is introduced for the non-linearity and the coupling with the thermal boundary layer equation. Because the non-linear terms are linearized without sacrifice of numerical accuracy, the solutions can be obtained without numerical iterations. Therefore the exact numerical solution, not approximate or series expansion, can be obtained. Compared with the approximate or series expansion method, this method is much improved. Results are compared with the series expansion solutions.

    Notes: The splitting difference scheme is used to study flow separation. Flows behind a circular cylinder are computed as a model problem. In view of the nature of the flow, the variables are transformed. The boundary condition for the pressure is given from an intermediate velocity. The free-slip velocity boundary conditions on the rigid wall are given by interpolation. The multigrid algorithm is applied to the pressure iteration. We also choose better initial values for the model problem by means of the multigrid algorithm idea.

    Notes: A time-dependent numerical algorithm is developed for the two-fluid model Euler of TLNS (thin layer Navier-Stokes) equations. The analysis is based on a MUSCL (monotone upstream central scheme for conservation laws)-type flux-vector-splitting scheme with the multi-level technique. This algorithm is applied to investigate JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) nozzle flow. Calculated results for both one- and two-phase flows are given to show the accuracy, the computational efficiency and the particle influence on the flow field.

    Notes: The development of a computer program to solve the axisymmetric full Navier--Stokes equations with k-ε two-equation model of turbulence using various total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes is the primary interest of this study. The computations are performed for the turbulent, transonic, viscous flow over a projectile with/without supporting sting at zero angle of attack. The predicted results, as well as the convergence characteristics, by various TVD schemes are compared with each other. The results show that the TVD schemes of higher-order accuracy do have influence on the regions of high gradients such as shock, base corner and base flow. However, the schemes of third-order accuracy do not necessarily improve the agreement with measured data (which is not available on the base) than that of second-order accuracy, but surely generate apparent different result of base flow. The supporting sting on the projectile base will complicate the base flow and the existence of the sting will slightly shift the shock location and slightly change the flow field after the shock. More iteration steps are needed to get the converged results in the computation for the projectile with sting.

    Notes: The stiffness characteristics of a packing of granules are influenced by the particle interactions at contacts, the void ratio, the co-ordination number and the packing structure. A stress-strain relationship for the packings of spheres is presented. The relationship explicitly includes the contact force-displacement law and the parameters characterizing the packing structure. The initial moduli computed using this relationship are compared with experimental measurements and empirical equations for sands. The theoretical results are also compared with experimental results on packings of glass balls. Closed-form solutions are derived for statistically isotropic packings under initial isotropic stress conditions. Numerical solutions for the stiffness properties are obtained for anisotropic initial stress conditions and anisotropic packing structures.

    Notes: A finite element model is developed for modelling coupled fluid expulsion/deformation behaviour of dewatering sediments subjected to external loadings under isothermal conditions. The non-linear deformation behaviour of the sediment (soil) skeleton is based on the force equilibrium equation in which the constitutive relationship of stress and strain is implemented by the modified Cam-Clay model in soil plasticity. The fluid flow behaviour in the model is described by the generalized porous media flow equation. The model allows temporal and spatial variations of porosity and permeability. The fluid viscosity and density are assumed to be temperature-dependent. The model also allows the development of single and multiple faults, depending upon the material (sediment and fluid) properties, loading and boundary conditions.Procedures are implemented for (1) updating the material properties such as porosity, permeability, fluid density and viscosity and (2) the development of faults which allow the formation of high-permeability conduits for fluid flow. The solution algorithm for displacements of the sediments and the excess pore (fluid) pressure is based on a residual load technique to handle the non-linear (elastic-plastic) deformation behaviour of the sediment skeleton. The model can be applied to one- and two-dimensional problems. Examples of a plane strain saturated sediment layer subjected to stepwise horizontal tractions versus time are given.
