Notizen: A numerical method is presented for the evaluation of field singularities of the type (1/r1-λ) using iterative solutions of standard boundary-element analyses in a region surrounding the origin of singularity. Results for λ are presented for both two and three-dimensional problems, and representative asymptotic fields for these examples are discussed.

Notizen: An essential feature of the transient dynamic kernels for any time domain boundary integral equation is that they decay towards the static kernels for large time increments. The purpose of the paper is to show that the kernels of Mansur and Brebbia (1982), which are expressed in the form of generalized mathematical functions, do exhibit the correct decay property in contradiction to the claims of Israil and Banerjee (1990). Mansur and Brebbia express the fundamental solution wave discontinuity in terms of the generalized functions H(t) and δ(t), the Heaviside and Dirac delta functions, but do not explicitly demonstrate the required long time behaviour. In the 1990 paper the temporal discontinuity of the kernels is expressed by conventional functions in two time regimes and is shown to possess the correct long time behaviour, while it is claimed that the kernels in the 1982 paper do not. It is shown here that, assuming either constant or linear variation in time, usage of the generalized functions in the fundamental solution does yield the static fundamental solution for large time steps, as expected.

Notizen: We outline here a finite element technique for the creep of solids whose constitutive equation contains one or more random parameters. In contrast to other finite element techniques for the prediction of random structural response, the present method is based upon exact relations from the theory of probability. It yields, at a given value of time, the probability density function for the field variable of interest, e.g. stress or displacement components. The method is illustrated by a simple creeping beam problem, using a power-law creep constitutive equation. The calculated distributions are found to be highly skewed, and in excellent agreement with the results of Monte Carlo simulation.

Notizen: A numerically effective method is suggested and applied for evaluating objective and constraint functions when so-called vibrational magnitudes of a mechanical structure are minimized. General damped linear structures under external harmonic loading are considered. The magnitude functions studied can relate to displacements, velocities and accelerations and also to sectional and reactive forces. Both magnitudes at a specific frequency and peak magnitudes and averaged magnitudes over a frequency range are investigated. An arbitrary set of magnitude functions can be used in the constraints. Design variables are masses, dampings and stiffnesses of discrete and discretized continuous elements contained in the structure. The objective and constraint functions are expressed by use of the modal parameters (generally complex-valued) of the structural system. A reduced modal model is established and updated during the optimization process. Approximate derivatives (sensitivities) of the objective and constraint functions with respect to changes in design variables are calculated employing perturbed modal parameters. The optimization problem is solved by use of a primal method. Numerical examples demonstrate applications to the classical damped vibration absorber with two design variables and to a beam system used in a light-weight machine foundation with 14 design variables.

Notizen: Two-sided Ostrowski matrix iteration is applied to solve eigenproblems of non-conservative continuous systems in structural dynamics starting from known eigensolutions of a related conservative system. Eigensolution paths are followed as the parameters of the system governing its non-conservative behaviour are increased from zero. No discretization is performed and no truncation errors are introduced. The real eigenvalues of the related conservative problem are calculated by use of the Wittrick-Williams algorithm. The corresponding eigenvectors are obtained with an inverse iteration method using eigenfrequency-dependent trial eigenvectors. Residues of system harmonic transfer functions are computed using the eigenvalues and eigenvectors together with eigenvector normalization constants (modal Foss dampings). These residues are needed in a transient analysis. The method is applied to the generalized Beck column stability problem. Critical loads are calculated. Harmonic flexibilities of subcritically loaded columns in transverse vibration are studied. Applications to control problems are foreseen.

Notizen: The regular boundary integral equations of elastostatics are combined with regularized versions of the tangent derivative equations and collocated at the same points to formulate the elasticity problem in terms of displacements, tractions and the tangential displacement gradients. Hermitian cubic polynomials are used for functional interpolation on certain elements to formulate the boundary element method in terms of displacements, tractions and their tangent derivatives. Commensurate accuracy of nodal values of these functions and the tangent derivatives is obtained and makes possible the accurate and immediate recovery of all stress components. An example problem demonstrates the accuracy and atility of the approach.

Notizen: We consider large eigenvalue problems for skeletal structures with symmetry. We present an algorithm, based upon a novel combination of group-theoretic ideas and substructuring techniques, that block-diagonalizes such systems exactly and efficiently. The procedure requires only the structural matrices of a repeating substructure, together with the symmetry modes, which are obtained from symmetry considerations alone. We first present a simple paradigmatic example and then follow with several non-trivial applications involving large lattice structures.

Notizen: The direct boundary integral equation formalism is used to model reflected and transmitted wave fields due to a bounded ultrasonic beam incident upon an arbitrarily curved interface separating a fluid and a solid media. The numerical procedure involves application of point collocation with quadratic isoparametric approximation that reduce the integral equations to a discrete set of linear algebraic equations. Numerical results are provided for plane, concave and convex interfaces for incident beam profiles which are Gaussian or approximately rectangular. The case of surface wave excitation on a plane interface is considered and features of their numerical solution are discussed. Constraints on the various parameters of the numerical model and their effects on the accuracy of the solution are investigated in detail.
