Notes: In a previous publication1 it was suggested that the most fruitful area for the deployment of ‘complicated’ soil models - i.e. those involving more than, say, 6 parameters - lay in analyses of undrained and partially drained problems. The present paper extends previous drained and undrained analyses to the partially drained state, for two rather simple boundary value problems.

Notes: This paper develops an electrical analogue for a gearbox suitable for use in the time-domain modelling of many electromechanical systems, with tensor methods being used to define the changing conditions in the gearbox brought about by backlash. Unlike most existing models it is compatible with the time-varying and discontinuous models often used to describe the electrical items of a typical system, and it allows for the effects of these items of mechanical non-linearities and discontinuities such as friction and backlash.

Notes: The paper outlines the operating principles of a 3 -phase to single -phase cycloinverter, as used in heating and melting applications, and presents a digital computer model on which performance predictions may be based. Ideal power switches, an input filter and a compensated heating load are assumed in formulating an initial set of state -variable equations which are valid when all the switching devices are conducting. Connection matrix techniques are then used to generate the mesh equations relevant to the continually changing pattern of the switching devices, leading to a very versatile simulation program. Experimental results from a laboratory -scale unit are presented for different output power levels, and these are compared with corresponding computed results to illustrate the close similarity that exists.

Notes: This paper describes a computationally efficient diakoptic algorithm for the solution of closed-mesh electrical network equations. The algorithm is designed for use with time-varying and/or discontinuous equations describing limited size power supply systems, allowing them to be torn into smaller subdivisions in a manner that is independent of their structure. The efficiency of the algorithm is demonstrated by comparing its performance with that obtained when using a more conventional sparse matrix technique, on the basis of the number of floating point operations required for the solution of a range of typical network problems. Mention is made of the parallel processes inherent in the resultant equation structure. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: In the Part I companion paper, various PCG (preconditioned conjugate gradient) strategies for solving the first order time dependent problem Mu̇ + Ku = f were compared. In all cases M was assumed to be the consistent ‘mass’ matrix arising out of conventional finite element semi-discretization of the partial differential equation, and not its lumped approximation. In the present paper, similar PCG strategies are applied to the second order time dependent problem Mü + Cu̇ + Ku = f. Again consistent M and C can be retained. Various global and element level preconditioners are compared and optimized.
