    Notes: The aim of this paper is to give open boundary conditions for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. From a weak formulation in velocity-pressure variables, some natural boundary conditions involving the traction or pseudotraction and inertial terms are established. Numerical experiments on the flow behind a cylinder show the efficiency of these conditions, which convey properly the vortices downstream. Comparisons with other boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure are also performed.

    Notes: Approximating convection-dominated diffusion equations requires a very accurate scheme for the convection term. The most famous is the method of backward characteristics, which is very precise when a good interpolation procedure is used. However, this method is difficult to implement in 2D or 3D. The goal of this paper is to show that it is possible to construct finite difference schemes almost as accurate as the method of characteristics. Starting from a family of second- and third- order Lax-Wendroff-type schemes, a TVD and L∞- stable scheme that is easy to implement in higher dimensions is constructed. Numerical tests are performed on various model problems whose solution is known and on classical problems. Comparisons with some other limiter schemes and the method of characteristics are discussed. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The dynamic response of an inhomogeneous, linear-elastic half-space to a time-harmonic vertical line load on its surface is studied. The mass density and the Poisson's ratio are assumed to be constant and the shear modulus to increase continuously with depth according to a function which is bounded at infinity. This model can describe a wide range of uniformly deposited soil strata. Analytical solutions for the displacement field at the surface are obtained using the classical contour integration method by means of the residue theorem. The dependence of the displacement field on distance from the source, frequency and shear modulus variation is examined as well as the relative contribution of the higher surface wave vibration modes to the total displacement.

    Notes: The equations for the meridional through-flow in a turbomachine are formulated as a quasi-harmonic non-linear equation. This equation is then solved iteratively by the finite element method and in order to obtain convergence an under-relaxation factor has to be introduced. Comparisons with experimental results in single and multistage axial compressors show very good agreement. The finite element method is thus shown to be an efficient tool for this type of problem.

    Notes: New finite elements, called crypto-DOF elements, are introduced, utilizing degrees of freedom that satisfy the differential equation but do not appear explicitly in the discrete equations. The crypto-DOF elements can be advantageous in adaptive finite element techniques, and to approximate singular-type eigensolutions (e.g. in convective diffusion or stress concentration problems) without altering the original mesh or introducing new degrees of freedom. In this paper the crypto-DOF elements, the construction of crypto-DOF element families and selected numerical results are presented.

    Notes: This paper presents a method for a quick evaluation of stresses and displacements in a plate structure for elastostatic problems. First, an approximation is built from the mathematical structure of the solutions for starshaped domains, which is representative of long wavelength effects. Second, a variational formulation consistent with this approximation is proposed. Finally, two alternative procedures for coupling adjacent domains are demonstrated.

    Notes: A three-dimensional (3-D) time-domain boundary integral equation method (BIEM) is presented for transient elastodynamic crack analysis. A non-hypersingular traction BIE formulation is used with the crack opening displacements and their derivatives as unknown quantities. A collocation method in conjunction with a time-stepping scheme is developed to solve the non-hypersingular time-domain BIEs. To simplify the analysis and to describe the proper behaviour of the unknown quantities at the crack front, a constant spatial shape function is applied for elements away from the crack front, while a spatial ‘square-root’ crack-tip shape function is adopted for elements near the crack front. A linear temporal shape function is used in the time-stepping scheme. Numerical calculations, have been carried out for penny-shaped and square cracks. Results for the elastodynamic stress intensity factors are presented as functions of the temporal and the spatial variables. For the test examples considered, good agreement between the present results and those of other authors is obtained.

    Notes: The paper introduces a general theory for the numerical simulation of large deformation contact problems. The contacting bodies under consideration may be of two- or three-dimensional shape modelled by finite elements. A contact finite element which can be applied to handle multi-body contact as well as contact with rigid bodies is developed. The element is universal in the sense that it can be used as a surface element for any known finite element model and includes friction. The frictional behaviour of the model obeys Coulomb's law of friction distinguishing between sticking and sliding contact. The algorithmic treatment is based on a penalty formulation for the normal and sticking contact. The corresponding consistent tangential stiffness matrices are derived, leading to an overall quadratic convergence behaviour for the method. This feature is demonstrated in a number of representative examples. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: For the interpretation of human neuromagnetic data it is necessary to compute the magnetic field of a source (e.g. a dipole) in a volume conductor (e.g. a homogeneous conducting sphere or a homogeneous head model). The Multiple Multipole (MMP) method, which is a semianalytical field calculation method, is applied to neuromagnetic field calculation for the first time. The unique feature of the MMP method is that multipole expansions are used for the description of the electromagnetic field. First a validation of the MMP method is done with the help of a spherical model and an analytical solution. Then the MMP method is applied to a realistically shaped one compartment head model. The results are compared to results obtained with the Boundary Element Method (BEM). The results suggest that it is possible to solve the neuromagnetic forward problem faster with the help of the MMP method than with the conventional numerical field calculation methods for realistic shaped volume conductor models. Further investigations are necessary to tackle the inverse problem of biomagnetism with the MMP method.

    Notes: This paper presents a new method in TLM for very efficient computation of highly conducting thin shielding walls. Firstly, the impulse response of a finite conducting sheet is computed analytically via inverse Laplace transform. Subsequently, a recursive convolution integral is formulated with the analytical impulse response. This allows a very efficient and accurate calculation of the diffusion process through imperfectly conducting walls.
