    Notes: A three-dimensional numerical model has been applied to study the impact of freshwater discharge from a river on the coastal circulation in the western Bay of Bengal. The basic dynamical framework of the model follows closely that described by Johns et al.1 for the simulation of coastal upwelling off the east coast of India. Using this model, experiments have been performed to investigate the impact of the freshwater discharge at the location of Godavari river along the east coast of India. A comparison of the model results, with and without the inclusion of river discharge, shows that the river discharge into the western Bay of Bengal suppresses the upwelling near the river mouth. Though there are no detailed observations on the flow structure near the mouth of the Godavari river, the computed results are in qualitative agreement with the observations documented by Rao and Jayaraman2 and Rao,3 who have shown that during monsoon period the upwelling off Godavari estuary is suppressed.

    Notes: This paper presents a method for computing the electrostatic field distribution at the interface between two dissimilar dielectrics based on the least-squares smoothing technique along with the potential-based classical finite element method by suitably incorporating the interface nodal conditions. It is found to give accurate results when compared with the results obtained by classical finite element method, and also it gives the continuous field distribution at the nodes in the case of a homogeneous dielectric problem. By using this method, the electrostatic field distributions in a solid insulated single-core cable with homogeneous dielectric and in a compressed sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas insulated disk-type spacer cable are determined. Laboratory investigations have also been carried out on a disk-type spacer cable by varying parameters like the spacer contact angle, the relative permittivity of the spacer material and the conductor diameter.

    Description: Versova, one of the 23 fishing villages in the district of Greater Bombay, is a major fishing centre. During the last three decades mechanisation of fishing boats received a tremendous boost in the state specially in and around Bombay resulting in higher income and gainful employment to fishermen. Indigenous construction of fishing boats at Versova contributes to the marine fisheries development. Inspite of certain constraints in construction activities, training of artisans in boat construction would ultimately help in the economic growth of the village.

    Notes: A moving finite element algorithm has been compared against the upwind-differencing and Smolarkiewicz methods for the population balance equation of multicomponent particle growth processes. Analytical solutions and an error function have been used to test the numerical methods. The moving finite elements technique is much more accurate than other methods for a wide range of parameters. Since this method uses moving grids, it is able to model very narrow particle size distributions. It is also shown that the method can be extended to solve condensational growth problems which include particle curvature and non-continuum mass transfer effects.

    Notes: In this work a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian technique is devised, hereinafter abbreviated as ELAFINT (Eulerian-Lagrangian Algorithm For INterface Tracking). The method is capable of handling fluid flows in the presence of both irregularly shaped solid boundaries and moving/free phase boundaries. The position and shape of the boundary are tracked explicitly by the Lagrangian translation of marker particles. The field equations are solved on an underlying fixed grid as in Eulerian methods. The interface passes through the grid lay-out and details regarding the treatment of the cut cells so formed are provided. The issues involved in treating the internal boundaries are dealt with, with particular attention to conservation and consistency in the vicinity of the interface. The method is tested by comparing with solutions from well-tested body-fitted co-ordinate methods. Test cases pertaining to forced and natural convection in irregular geometries and moving phase boundaries with melt convection are presented. The capability developed here can be beneficial in solving difficult flow problems involving moving and geometrically complex boundaries.

    Notes: Two-dimensional finite element analyses of two types of gate - (i) a conduit gate with pressure flow upstream of the gate and free surface flow downstream of the gate and (ii) a sluice gate with free surfaces both upstream and downstream of the gate - are done using ideal fluid theory. The conduit gate problem is solved using both Φ- and Ψ- formulations. Various methods of satisfying the boundary conditions were tested for both formulations. The ψ-formulation developed in the present study is found to converge faster for flows with Froude numbers less than 4, which are common in sluice gates. The results obtained from the present study are compared with results from analytical and experimental techniques available in the literature. The ψ-formulation developed in the present study is then used to solve the spillway gate problem, for which no analytical solution is available.

    Notes: A two-dimensional baroclinic model is described for coastal upwelling in a vertical plane perpendicular to the coast. The model consists of equations of motion, continuity and turbulence energy along with equations for salinity and thermal energy and an equation of state. The role of density gradient in the baroclinic pressure gradient is investigated to understand the dynamics during the upwelling process. To represent the surface and bottom boundaries corresponding to a fixed computational level in the discretized equations, a set of non-dimensional co-ordinates is used. These co-ordinates are then transformed onto logarithmic co-ordinate axes to resolve effectively the boundary layers.The first experiment is carried out with a flat bottom to understand the dynamics of the upwelling and the structural features of the process by diagnostic analysis of the balance between various terms of the momentum equation. Starting from a state of rest, a spatially uniform alongshore wind stress corresponding to the mean monthly wind stress for the month of May is applied and held constant thereafter. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and stratified, with the initial temperature and salinity having no horizontal variations but a uniform vertical gradient. As the upwelling phenomenon is transient in nature and keeping in mind the additional computational overheads, the response of the model is studied day-wise up to 4 days.In the second experiment the model is applied to study the upwelling off the east coast of India in a plane normal to the coast of Visakhapatnam. The analysis area extends to 100 km offshore with real topography. The results are presented day-wise for 4 days, comparing the balance between various terms in the upwelling region and in the open sea, and the dynamics of the baroclinic coastal jet is explained. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
