Notes: Incomplete LU factorizations are among the most effective preconditioners for solving general large, sparse linear systems arising from practical engineering problems. This paper shows how an ILU factorization may be easily computed in sparse skyline storage format, as opposed to traditional row-by-row schemes. This organization of the factorization has many advantages, including its amenability when the original matrix is in skyline format, the ability to dynamically monitor the stability of the factorization and the fact that factorizations may be produced with symmetric structure. Numerical results are presented for Galerkin finite element matrices arising from the standard square lid-driven cavity problem. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: A numerical procedure is presented for the downdrag analysis of group piles which penetrate a consolidating upper soil layer to socket into a firm bearing stratum of finite stiffness. The settlement of the consolidating upper soil layer under a surcharge load is estimated using Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory. Parametric solutions are presented to show the influence of various parameters on the performance of the socketed pile groups in terms of the development of the induced downdrag forces and associated pile head settlements. In general, pile-soil-pile interaction has the beneficial effect of reducing the downdrag forces and settlements of the group piles when compared to the corresponding single pile values, provided that the soil settlements are not so large as to cause full slippage at the interface in all the piles. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the theoretical and experimental results for pile groups subjected to negative skin friction.

Notes: A neural network approach for the prediction of pile bearing capacity by the stress-wave matching technique is presented. The main advantage of this approach over the traditional manual or automated matching approach is that it avoids the time-consuming process of iterative adjustment. This makes it feasible to determine the static pile capacity in real time in the field. Another benefit of this approach is that as more case histories become available, the neural network can be improved by learning from these new examples.A three-layer back-propagation network is set up to illustrate the capability of the proposed approach for 70 dynamically tested concrete bored piles. A wave equation model developed at the National University of Singapore and coded in the NUSWAP computer program is used to formulate the problem. Up to 14 of the 70 piles (20 percent) are used in training the network. The NUSWAP program is used to generate simulation training examples based on the manually fitted training examples for further training of the network. Different network configurations are examined. The trained network produces results exhibiting good stress-wave matching qualities compared to those obtained by manual fitting. The pile bearing capacities predicted by the two approaches agree very closely. The load-settlement curve and axial load distribution in the pile computed using the network-predicted soil parameters are in good agreement with the field measurements obtained from a maintained load test.

Notes: A survey of recent developments in sparse matrix technology is presented. Two fundamental areas are reviewed: 1.Sorting and reordering techniques by which the non-zero elements of a given sparse matrix can be rearranged to obtain a form which leads to more efficient computations.2.Direct methods for solving systems of linear equations and computing inverses.

Notes: This article discusses two alternative methods of formulating the recently proposed quadrilateral plane element Qcs6, which is based on a generalized functional with multiple stress fields. The first method is derived by an extended Hu-Washizu Principle with the presence of incompatible modes and enforcement of energy orthogonality, while the second one is established on a non-conventional discrete local stress smoothing. Both methods can be applied to other structural element formulations with enhanced efficiency.

Notes: This paper presents the development of a finite element analysis based on an anisotropic model of continuum damage mechanics theory proposed recently by the authors for ductile fracture under non-proportional loading. The condition of non-proportional loading is formulated by introducing a dynamic co-ordinate system of principal damage allowing the principal direction of damage during the loading to rotate accordingly. The finite element analysis developed under non-proportional loading is applied to predict the crack initiation load of a centre-cracked plate under uniform loading. The predicted load agrees satisfactorily with those determined experimentally with centre-cracked thin plates made of aluminium alloy 2024-T3. The analysis also reveals under non-proportional loading the hysteresis effect of the principal directions of damage and stress. In addition, the influence of varying anisotropic damage coefficients on the crack initiation load and the crack tip displacement profile is also examined. The larger the degree of the anisotropy, the higher the crack initiation load. The magnitude of the crack tip displacement profile is found to be proportional to the degree of material anisotropy.

Notes: This paper introduces three four-node quadrilateral axisymmetric elements. The first one is an incompatible element while the second one is a modification of the first element by an extended Hellinger-Reissner principle. The second element is then simplified by incorporating the conceptual idea of free formulation and thus forms the third element. All of the three elements are found to be invariant, insensitive to nodal point numbering, free of locking for nearly incompressible material, able to pass the patch test and do not exhibit the false shear phenomenon. Numerical examples are given and satisfactory predictions are achieved.
