    Notes: To date, methods for calculating the trajectories of ions in radio frequency (RF) multipole fields have involved solving, analytically or numerically, the appropriate equations of motion. Another method is presented here whereby a non-ideal distribution of field may be modelled and the position of an ion can be tracked, as it traverses the multipole. The validity of the calculations is discussed and some of the properties of collision cells are explained. Fragmentation processes within the cell are modelled showing that the focusing properties within the cell have a striking effect on parent- and daughter-ion transmission.

    Notes: This paper describes a numerical method for the study of combined natural convection and radiation in a rectangular, two-dimensional cavity containing a non-participating (i.e. transparent) fluid.One wall of the cavity is isothermal, being heated either by solar radiation or independently. The opposite wall is partially transparent, permitting radiation exchanges between the cavity and its surroundings and/or the Sun; that wall also exchanges heat by convection from its external surface to the surroundings. The other two walls are adiabatic: convection and radiation there are balanced, so that there is no heat transfer through those walls.The equations of motion and energy are solved by finite difference methods. Coupled to these equations are the radiative flux boundary conditions which are used to determine the temperature distribution along the non-isothermal walls. A two-band radiation model has been employed.Results are presented for a square cavity with a vertical hot wall at 150 °C, the ambient at 20 °C and 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 3 × 105, in the absence of direct insolation. The effects on the flow and heat transfer in the cavity of radiation and external convection have been examined. More extensive results will be presented in subsequent papers.

    Notes: A stable fast marching scheme has been developed for the solution of coupled parabolic partial differential equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations. The scheme was developed with the aid of a stability analysis. The implementation of the method in standard alternating direction implicit algorithms is straightforward. The scheme was tested on the problem of natural convection in a square cavity. The number of iterations required for convergence was significantly reduced compared to conventional methods.

    Notes: An examination of the effects of frictional heating of pore fluid in relation to long-term slope stability is presented. It is found that increases in pore-fluid pressure due to heat-induced expansion may act to enhance creep rates and possibly lead to total loss of stability. Conditions for total stability loss are examined and an approximate critical value of average shear stress is determined. This value must be exceeded for a sufficiently long period of time in order to induce rapid failure.

    Notes: A simple approximate analysis is presented for interpretation of cone penetration results when the cone resistance is affected by layering of soils with different stiffnesses. It is argued that the cone resistance senses the presence of a nearby layer elastically, and an approximate elastic analysis is developed to quantify the effect. Good comparisons with calibration chamber experimental results are found.

    Notes: Using the Haskell-Thomson transfer matrix approach, an analytical solution is obtained for SH wave amplification by multiple layers of Gibson soils (i.e. viscoelastic layers with linearly varying shear moduli). Amplification spectra for typical soil and basement rock properties are calculated. A comparison of the Gibson soil response with that obtained for homogeneous soil models shows generally stronger amplifications associated with the Gibson soil.

    Notes: An in vivo uninary metabolite of the bladder carcinogen 2-amino-4-(5-nitro-2-furyl) thiazole was isolated from guinea pig urine and was identified by direct analysis using thermospray mass spectrometry/high-performance liquid chromatography as 1-(2-amino-4-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-2-thiazolyl)-1-deoxy-β-D-glucopyranuronic acid. The structure of this metabolite was also established by chemical synthesis. Both positive and negative ion thermospray mass spectrometry of the conjugate showed fragment ions resulting from cleavage across the pyran ring of the glucuronic acid comprising of aglycone moiety. These characteristic fragment ions may be diagnostic for identification of N-glucuronides from O-glucuronides.

    Notes: An ultrasensitive method capable of detection and quantification of β-phenylethylamine in 1 ml of human plasma has been developed using gas chromatography/electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry. Phenylethylamine and tetra-deutero phenylethylamine internal standard in plasma were acetylated, extracted into organic solvent and then further acylated with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride. The N-acetyl-N-pentafluorobenzoyl-phenylethylamines were detected by high-resolution single ion monitoring of the molecular ions. Normal plasma levels were found to be 41.5 ± 10.7 pg ml-1, in accordance with results of a previous high-performance liquid chromatographic method.
