Notizen: The fluid flow in distensible tubes is analysed by a finite element method based on an uncoupled solution of the equations of wall motion and fluid flow. Special attention is paid to the choice of proper boundary conditions. Computations were made for sinusoidal flow in a distensible uniform tube with the Womersley parameter α = 5, and a ratio between tube radius and wavelenth from 0·0001 to 0·5. The agreement between the numerical results and Womersley's analytic solution depends on the speed ratio between fluid and wave velocity, and is fair for speed ratios up to 0·05. The analysis of the flow field in a distensible tube with a local inhomogeneity revealed a marked influence of wave phenomena and wall motion on the velocity profiles.

Notizen: Localization of deformations has been investigated in a series of displacement controlled uniaxial compression experiments. Of main interest are the effects of specimen slenderness and friction between loading platen and specimen. Both effects have a direct influence on the development of localized fracture zones in the specimen. The results indicate that the use of a double layer of teflon with an intermediate layer of grease yields size-independent results as far as the pre-peak stress-strain behaviour and the peak strength are concerned. However, in terms of stress and strain, a significant influence of both the specimen slenderness and the amount of boundary restraint has been observed in the post-peak regime. It is found that the post-peak curves become almost completely identical when they are plotted in terms of nominal stress and post-peak displacement. For any type of loading platen used, the post-peak relative stress-displacement curves are found to be independent of the specimen height. Furthermore, since during post-peak localization relative sliding and movements of larger parts of the specimen are observed, the definition of a unique Poisson's ratio is virtually impossible.

Notizen: A scheme is presented that automatically determines the magnitude of the time step in quasistatic boundary value problems discretized via some customary method (finite elements, finite differences). The basic idea stems from the path-following techniques widely employed in purely static analyses in the sense that the incremental displacements, measured in some suitable norm, are constrained to a prefixed value. Examples of trusses composed of a viscoelastic material are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

Notizen: A standard Galerkin finite element penalty function method is used to approximate the solution of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for steady incompressible Newtonian entrance flow in a 90° curved tube (curvature ratio δ = 1/6) for a triple of Dean numbers (κ = 41, 122 and 204). The computational results for the intermediate Dean number (κ = 122) are compared with the results of laser-Doppler velocity measurements in an equivalent experimental model. For both the axial and secondary velocity components, fair agreement between the computational and experimental results is found.

Notizen: In this paper a penalty finite element solution method for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional incompressible flow is described. The performances of the Euler implicit (EI) and the Crank-Nicolson (CN) time integration methods are analysed. Special attention is payed to the undamped pressure oscillations which can occur when the Crank-Nicolson integration rule is used in combination with the penalty function method. Stability and convergence properties are illustrated by means of the computation of fully developed oscillating flow between two flat plates. Furthermore, the von Karman vortex street past a circular cylinder is computed to demonstrate the behaviour of the time integration schemes for a more complicated flow. It is concluded that the EI method has its advantages over the CN method with respect to the damping of numerical oscillations. However, for flows with an important convective contribution, where physically originated oscillations may be present, the CN method is preferable.

Notizen: The atomic mixing model that forms the basis of the IMPETUS software is described in detail. The model simulates the mixing and particle emission that occurs when a solid is bombarded with energetic particles, such as in SIMS or SNMS. The methods employed for computing the deposition of the bombarding particles and their energies along with the modelling of the particle yield and the surface recession speed are described. The material volume concentrations are governed by a set of partial differential equations. A description of the finite element method that is employed for their solution is given. Results from the application of IMPETUS II to a number of typical structures are given. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This paper examines the use of parallel processing techniques for the electromagnetic field analysis of multilayered microwave interconnects. These techniques are applied to a full-wave formulation using an integral equation approach in the frequency domain. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of parallelization and to assess its performance advantages, several variations of the computer code have been developed. Performance tests using domain partitioning and load balancing were conducted on a 32-processor shared-memory machine (KSR1).

Notizen: When one end of an extensible beam whose ends are a fixed distance apart, is hinged while to other end a load is attached, the mathematical model describing the vibrations of the beam contains a non-linearity both in the partial differential equation as well as in the dynamical boundary condition. We introduce weak damping and consider the resulting boundary-value problem within the framework of the theories of B-evolutions and fractional powers of a closed pair of operators. This approach enables us to construct a unique weak solution which exhibits exponential decay by employing Faedo-Galerkin approximations.

Notizen: Various plane rotation patterns are presented, which provide stable algorithms for reducing a b-band matrix bordered by p rows and/or columns to (b + p)-band form. These schemes generalize previously presented O(N2) reduction algorithms for matrices of order N, b = 1, and p = 1 to the reduction of more general b-band, p-bordered matrices where b ≥ 1 and p ≥ 1. Moreover, by splitting the matrix into two similarly structured submatrices and chasing nonzeros to the corners in two directions, the newly proposed patterns reduce the number of required rotations and hence the computational cost by one half compared to the other existing one-way chasing algorithms. Symmetric, as well as more general matrices, are considered. An example of the first type is the symmetric arrowhead matrix that arises in solving inverse eigenvalue problems. Examples of the second type are found in updating the singular value decomposition (SVD) and the partial SVD.
