Notes: Preparation of styryl derivatives of 3-phenyl-benzisoxazole3-(p-Tolyl)-1,2-or 2, 1-benzisoxazoles and 6-methyl-3-phenyl-1,2-benzisoxazoles react with anils of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of dimethylformamide and potassium hydroxide or potassium t-butoxide to yield the corresponding 3-(stilben-4-yl)-1,2- or 2,1-benzisoxazoles and the 3-phenyl-6-styryl-1,2-benzisoxazoles respectively (‘Anil Synthesis’). Further, the Schiff's bases derived form chloroanilines and 3-(p-formylphenyl)-1,2-benzisoxazoles yield, with methyl-and p-tolyl substituted heterocyles the corresponding heterocyclic substitued styryl and stilbenyl derivatives.

Notes: A method is presented to calculate the eigenvalues of the Helmholtz equation Δ2ø + k2ø = 0 in a two-dimensional area when ø vanishes on the boundary. The method is based on an integral equation, which can be easily solved numerically. Results obtained for circular and rectangular geometries are also given and compared to the exact values.

Notes: Abel's integral equation is the governing equation for certain problems in physics and engineering, such as radiation from distributed sources. The finite element method for the soultion of this non-linear equation is presented for problems with cylindrical symmetry and the extension to more general integral equations is indicated. The technique was applied to an axisymmetric glow discharge problem and the results show excellent agreement with previously obtained solutions.

Notes: This paper describes the computational aspects of an earlier analytical study1,2 of the problem of maximizing a linear combination of the natural frequencies of vibration of a turbine disc idealization subject to weight and fabrication constraints. The problem was formulated as an optimal control problem and solutions to the adjoint equations of the Pontryagin formalism obtained using perturbation techniques. These techniques transformed the problem to a non-linear program. This paper gives detailed computational solutions to the non-linear program which is characterized by pockets of relative optima. In addition, the dual problem of minimizing the weight subject to a frequency constraint is considered within the optimal control framework. The duality results are confirmed computationally for the two non-linear programs.A description of some practical procedures for improving the convergence characteristics of these highly non-linear programs is included.

Notes: An integral equation method is presented for the numerical calculation of the eigenvalues of the scalar Helmholtz equation. By using a particular solution instead of Green's function, the calculations could be simplified due to the elimination of complex numbers.

Notes: A finite element method is presented for the analysis of prestressed cablenets. The method is based on representing the prestressed cablenet as a series of finite length curved elements. The large displacement formulation used, enables the evaluation of the static and dynamic response of 3-D cablenets. The development is general and the mathematical basis is explained at length. It is shown by means of comparison functions that for absolute continuity at nodes, a cubic displacement field is sufficient for the prediction of the first frequency of shallow nets. For globally deep networks the accuracy can be increased by employing a quintic displacement field for the normal component of displacement. The application of the proposed model to cable structures of shallow and also of deep global geometry, is presented. A variety of edge boundary shapes are employed in order to illustrate the versatility of the large displacement formulation. In all the example problems studied, gravity load has been taken as the initial load condition in calculating the equilibrium configuration. The stiffness and consistent mass matrices associated with the equation of motion are derived using Hamilton's variational principle.

Notes: A minimum-time, thermal-to-thermal sailplane trajectory optimization problem is formulated as a non-linear optimal control problem. Numerical solutions are obtained using a gradiaent projection algorithm which incorporates conjugate directions of search. Further insight into the nature of the solutions and the computational process is ontained through an analysis of the linearized sailplane dynamics and the necessary conditions for optimality. Numerical results are presented for two sailplane types and various values of thermal strength and distance between thermals. An additional problem is formulated and solved for the case of bounded control rate.

Notes: By condensation of the chlorides of the four isomeric fluorenecarboxylic acids, respectively of the three 1-, 3- and 4-fluorenonecarboxylic acids with fluorene, followed by reduction of the obtained mono-respectively diketones, the four difluorenylmethanes I, II, III and IV are synthesized. The oxydation of the diketones gives the corresponding triketones. Starting from the chloride of 4-fluorenecarboxylic acid and 1-methylfluorene, a methyl derivative of IV is analogically obtained.
