Notes: Abstract A theory is proposed for the electrophoresis of a large colloidal particle with a surface charge layer. The slipping plane is assumed to be located within the surface layer but may not be located at the boundary between the surface layer and the particle core. In previous studies, the depth of the slipping plane is assumed to coincide with the surface layer thickness. The present theory makes it possible to examine the separate dependence of the electrophoretic mobility on the position of the slipping plane and on the surface layer thickness. It is shown that, at constant amount of particle-fixed charges in the surface layer, the mobility increases as the depth of the slipping plane (d s ) increases, while it decreases as the surface layer thickness (d c ) increases, causing a mobility maximum in some cases ifd s =d c . Several approximate analytic expressions for the mobility are presented.

Notes: Abstract A general expression is given for the electrophoretic mobility of a large charged colloidal particle coated with a layer of adsorbed charged polymers. A liquid flow within the polymer layer is taken into account. The potential distribution is calculated on the basis of the non-linear Poisson Boltzmann equation. Simple approximate analytic expressions for the electrophoretic mobility are derived for various cases.

Notes: Craze initiation and propagation near a Griffith crack were studied in poly(methyl methacrylate) and polycarbonate. Craze propagation results either in eventual catastrophic failure or in termination of propagation. Photoelastic observations indicate that high stress concentration at the initial crack tip is relieved immediately after craze initiation and craze propagation introduces no new stress concentration at the craze front. These results lead to the conclusion that the criteria for craze initiation and propagation are described fairly well by the stress intensity factor. A fracture mechanics model proposed by Marshall et al. can explain the kinetics of craze propagation in poly(methyl methacrylate). However the growth rates are lower in polycarbonate than in poly(methyl methacrylate). This is attributed to the difference in a penetrant activity.

Notes: Creep failure in oriented nylon 6 fibers has been studied. The results suggest that the variations in the lifetime under various loading histories are inherent, but statistical, characteristics of the material itself. The treatment of experimental data by a stochastic theory shows that the creep failure can be regarded as a nucleation process. An interpretative analysis of the structural changes during creep indicates that the nucleation is brought about by bond rupture in the amorphous regions of the fiber structures.
