Description: The distribution and abundance of high aquatic plants in the Gorganroud River was examined at five stations in four seasons (20 samples) over one year period during 2009-2010. We identified 21 species of aquatic plants from 21 genera, belonging to 9 families. These species were determined as 3 halophytic species (14.2%) and 18 high aquatic plants (85.7%).The highest species diversity was observed at Khajenafas, Aq qala and Chargoli stations(17, 13 and 11 species) respectively, The highest biomass of high aquatic plants were recorded in summer (for Inspection and Chargoli stations 11.5 and 10.1 g.m-2, respectively) and autumn (for the station of Inspection was 8.5 g.m-2 dry weight). The most dominant species were different in the investigated stations. At station 1 species Tamarix kotschyi, at station 2 species Juncus acutiflorus, at station 3 species Hordeum murinum hudson, at station 4 species Salicornia europaea L and at station 5 Juncus acutiflorus species were dominated.

Description: The coastal area of the Caspian Sea and Gorgan Bay are important ecosystems receiving discharge from their tributaries. In this study, concentration of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) was seasonally determined at 8 sampling points during 2009-2010. Water samples were collected from the sampling stations and transferred to laboratory in polyethylene containers, whereas, sediment and benthic fauna samples were collected using a Van Veen grab. The levels of heavy metals were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy method. Results showed that range of Pb, Cd, Cr and Zn in the water samples were 80-123, 61-97, 63-87 and 82-120 ppb, respectively and their ranges in the sediment samples were 479-1072, 98-293, 102-622 and 937-1577 ppb, respectively. The range of Pb, Cd, Cr and Zn in the benthos samples were 95-132, 59-110, 26-58 and 103-155 ppb, respectively. Zn and Pb were the most concentrate metals in all samples. Likewise, sediment had the highest heavy metal content amongst the samples. This study demonstrated that the level of metals in the environment is increasing, bringing a serious warning to industries and threat of man-made contamination, which can be restricted and a necessity to control ecosystem and food-chain pollution

Description: This study was performed to investigating distribution and biomass of two species of brown algae (Colpomenia sinuosa and Iyengaria stellata) in coastal waters of Hormozgan Province, Southern Iran. We sampled the algae over the years 2001 to 2002 in low tide periods using random 0.5 * 0.5 quadrats along a transect passing through six sampling stations. The highest distribution extent of the two brown algae species during winter and spring seasons observed which coincided with the highest fluctuation in their biomass. The maximum biomass of C. sinuosa in winter and spring was 142 and 75 grams/m2 respectively. For I. stellata, the maximum biomass in the two seasons was 208 and 189 Grams/m2 respectively. Analysis of variance showed a significant difference among the biomass of the two algae species over different months and seasons of the year (p〈0.05). Hence, we concluded that the species occurrence is seasonal and did not find a significant difference in the biomass of the two species obtained from different sampling stations. However, species appearance in different stations occurred in different months with the western stations showing a 1 to 2 months’ time lag compared to that of the eastern stations.

Description: The properties of kiddi shrimp (Parapenaeopsis stylifera) gel added with different levels of microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) (0.6, 1, 1.4 and 1.8 units/g) were studied. Most textural parameters of the gels improved by adding MTGase espacially at higher levels (1.8 and 1.4).The expressible moisture and trichloroacetic acid content declined with the increase in MTGase content. MTGase espacially at higher levels was effective in the color of the gels so that it increased L* and decreased a*andb* value. SDS-PAGE study revealed that myosin heavy chain underwent polymerization to a higher extent in the presence of MTGase. Microstructure of gels added with 1.8 units of MTGase had more ordered fibrillar structure compared with those of gels without MTGase. Therefore it could be concluded that at MTGase play an important role in improving the gel properties of kiddi shrimp mince.

Description: Measurement of chlorophyll-a can be considered important to investigate the primary production of an ecosystem. This study aimed to investigate chlorophyll-a concentration, primary production and the factors affecting them in Shadegan Wetland located in Khouzestan Province - Iran. Sampling for measuring (NO3, PO4, BOD5, DO, pH, EC, salinity, temperature) was performed seasonally at five sampling stations of the wetland (Canal, Ragbeh, Khoroosi, Mahshahr and Atish), from March 2013 – through February 2014. Results showed that chlorophyll-a concentrations in Canal station were significantly higher than that in the other stations; however, there were no significant differences among the other sampling stations (p〉0.05). The maximum and minimum primary production (and chlorophyll-a) (62, 1.14 mg/m^3) were observed at Canal and Ragbeh stations, respectively. Annual average chlorophyll-a concentration was 10.28 mg/m^3, and there was no significant seasonal difference (p〉0.05). The maximum value of chlorophyll-a was observed in the fall (29.63 mg/m^3), whereas, the minimum value was related to the spring (4.07 mg/m^3). Among the water physicochemical parameters, nitrate had a significant effect on chlorophyll-a concentrations. According to trophic state index (TSI), Shadegan Wetland is mesotrophic in the spring and winter, whereas it is eutrophic in the summer and fall. Overall, the lake is suitable for warm water species.

Description: Chlorophyll-a is a main pigment for photosynthetic process in marine phytoplankton and by it either amount of biomass can be estimated or can be considered as an index for trophic level of aquatic ecosystem. In year 1996, 81 secchi disc depth were measured and 1601 samples of chlorophyll-a were collected seasonaly from the southern Caspian Sea. The results showed that average chlorophyll-a in seasonals of spring, summer, autumn and winter were 1.072, 0.550, 1.848, 0.966 mg/m3 and depth of transparency were 6.42, 8.86, 5.62 and 5.22m, respectively. The statistical analysis showed a significant correlation (P〈0.01) between these two parameters in the southern Caspian Sea. More studies are needed to find out higher precise correlation.
