Description: Objectives and progress in both low concentration ratio (6 to 10) and high concentration ratio ( 100) array developments are summarized. Problems encountered include: thermal control, maldistribution of concentrated sunlight, current busing, and optical surface degradation. The potential advantages over planar arrays are an order of magnitude reduction in per unit cost of power plus increased immunity to radiation damage.

Description: The MINP solar cell concept refers to a cell structure designed to be a base region dominated device. Thus, it is desirable that recombination losses are reduced to the point that they occur only in the base region. The most unique feature of the MINP cell design is that a tunneling contact is utilized for the metallic contact on the front surface. The areas under the collector grid and bus bar are passivated by a thin oxide of tunneling thickness. Efforts must also be taken to minimize recombination at the surface between grid lines, at the junction periphery and within the emitter. Results of both theoretical and experimental studies of silicon MINP cells are given. Performance calculations are described which give expected efficiencies as a function of base resistivity and junction depth. Fabrication and characterization of cells are discussed which are based on 0.2 ohm-cm substrates, diffused emitters on the order of 0.15 to 0.20 microns deep, and with Mg MIS collector grids. A total area AM 1 efficiency of 16.8% was achieved. Detailed analyses of photocurrent and current loss mechanisms are presented and utilized to discuss future directions of research. Finally, results reported by other workers are discussed.

Description: The Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), designed, built, integrated, tested, and operated by NASA and Martin Marietta is a low-Earth orbiting, Earth-observing spacecraft which was launched via Space Shuttle Discovery on September 12, 1991 and deployed three days later. The Modular Power Subsystem (MPS) onboard the satellite is equipped with three NASA Standard 50 Ampere-hour (Ah) nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries. McDonnell Douglas Electronics Systems Company fabricated the MPS, and batteries from Gates Aerospace Batteries cells. Nominal battery performance was achieved for the first four months of spacecraft operation. First evidence of anomalous battery performance was observed in January 1992, after the first maximum beta angle (low Depth of Discharge) period. Since then, the Flight Operations Team (FOT), under the direction of Goddard Space Flight Center's UARS Project and Space Power Application Branch, has monitored and managed battery performance by adjusting solar array offset angle, conducting periodic deep discharge, and controlling battery recharge ratio. This paper covers a brief overview of the UARS, the FOT's operational battery management, and the observed spacecraft battery performance.

Description: P/N InP homojunction solar cells have been prepared by using both liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) and metallorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth techniques. A heavily doped p-In sub 0.53Ga sub 0.47As contacting layer was incorporated into the cell structure to improve the fill factor and to eliminate surface spiking at the front surface. The best conversion efficiencies (total area) obtained under AM 1 illumination are 14.2 percent for a LPE cell and 15.4 percent for a MOCVD cell.

Description: A static load test was performed on the spare Mod-0 wind turbine blade to define load transfer at the root end of the blade, and to validate stress analysis of this particular type of blade construction (frame and stringer). Analysis of the load transfer from the airfoil skin to the shank tube predicted a step change in spanwise stress in the airfoil skin at station 81.5 inches (STA 81.5). For flatwise bending a 40% reduction in spanwise stress was predicted, and for edgewise bending a 6% reduction. Experimental results verified the 40% reduction for flatwise bending, but indicated about a 30% reduction for edgewise bending.
