Notes: Isomeric cyclodiphosphazane selenides, R(X)P(NBu1)2P(Y)R (R=OMe or NMe2, X=Se, Y=lone pair; R=OMe or NMe2, X=Y=Se) display large differences (34-122 ppm) in 77Se chemical shift. The 77Se shifts of these and related amino derivatives are well to low field of the 77Se shifts of analogous acyclic phosphorus selenides.

Notes: The Wurtz-type coupling of a number of representative classes of substituted dichlorosilane monomers was investigated in considerable detail. Low temperature polymerization techniques, including ultrasonic activation, were also studied. Similarly, the effect of dipolar additives on the polymerization process was examined. The conclusions drawn from these studies provide some insight into the selection of useful polymerization conditions for the conversion of various monomer types into linear high polymers.

Notes: A simple 13C-NMR method for the quantitative determination of polyflavonoid tannin characteristics was developed. The system is effective for use on concentrated (25-50%) solutions of natural and modified tannins. It allows the determination of the average degree of polymerization (DPn) of the polyflavonoid, resorcinol vs. phloroglucinol proportion of the A-ring and catechol vs. pyrogallol proportion of the B-ring. The results obtained are consistent with existing data determined by other techniques. The method was also tried with tannin extract that was modified to form thermosetting adhesive intermediates, and with tannin modified by sulfonation, a common commercial modification for these materials. The results were again consistent with what was expected. The method affords the possibility to follow by a simple technique the variations in DPn and MM̄n (number-average molecular weight) induced by chemical modifications of polyflavonoid tannin extracts and thus to correlate them with relevant structural modifications affecting these parameters. The method is not capable of distinguishing the relative proportions of the four important flavonoid units present in commercial polymeric tannin extract. It can only distinguish the relative proportions of (i) (procyanidins + prodelphinidins) vs. (profisetinidins + prorobinetinidins) and (ii) (prorobinetinidins + prodelphinidins) vs. (profisetinidins + procyanidins). © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The crystal orientation distribution in injection-molded bars made from several polypropylene compounds has been investigated using pole figure analysis. The fillers used were glass fibers, chalk, and talc, and some compounds contained one filler and others contained glass fibers plus one or both of the others. All compounds showed strong orientation in the skin with the b-axis of the monoclinic crystals lying preferentially normal to the flow direction and in many cases parallel to the normal to the bar face. This normal direction orientation was very strong in compounds containing talc and is probably caused by crystals forming with their (010) planes on the talc platelet faces, which align themselves parallel to the mold face. Strong orientation persists into the interior of the moldings containing talc, whereas in the other compounds, the orientation at intermediate depths is much less pronounced than in the skin. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: Since September 1991, the ERS-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) has collected approximately 170 frames of ocean imagery on 28 passes over the western Gulf Stream in support of ESA experiment US8-2c. SAR signatures of the north wall are seen on nearly all passes, with modulation depth varying from 3% to 35% for 100 m samples. Many small and mesoscale circulation features associated with the Stream are evident. The detailed form of the signature varies considerably, however. Narrow bright or dark linear features appear to follow streamlines, and on one occasion a strong dark line was associated with an in situ measurement of a sharp current shear. Similarly, larger spatial scale changes in backscatter over the Stream were associated with in situ measurements of atmospheric stability transitions. Physical explanations for the narrow features are not so obvious. However, the accumulation of surfactants along converging current boundaries or local short wave straining and breaking appear plausible. These preliminary results strongly suggest that a wide swath (approximately 500 km) SAR with at least 100 m resolution would be a useful adjunct to existing satellite AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) imagery.

Description: As a part of a follow-on study to the moisture stress detection effort conducted in the Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE), a technique utilizing transformed Landsat digital data was evaluated for detecting moisture stress in humid growing regions using sample segments from Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana. At known growth stages of corn and soybeans, segments were classified as undergoing moisture stress or not undergoing stress. The remote-sensing-based information was compared to a weekly ground-based index (Crop Moisture Index). This comparison demonstrated that the remote sensing technique could be used to monitor the growing conditions within a region where corn and soybeans are the major crop.

Description: Multitemporal Thematic Mapper, Thematic Mapper Simulator, and detailed ground truth data were collected for a 9- by 11-km sample segment in Webster County, Iowa, in the summer of 1982. Three dates were acquired each with Thematic Mapper Simulator (June 7, June 23, and July 31) and Thematic Mapper (August 2, September 3, and October 21). The additional TM spectral bands in the middle infrared were found to substantially improve corn/soybean separability in both single date and multitemporal analyses.

Description: Landsat MSS data transformed into Kauth-Thomas greenness were averaged over 5 n.mi x 6 n.mi. sample segments from the U.S. Great Plains winter and spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) regions, and related by regression analysis to yields reported by county, crop reporting district (CRD) and state levels. Evidence of a linear relation between winter- and spring-wheat yields and Landsat spectral data at a broad scale is shown for 1978 and 1979. A common slope of about 1.6 (Bu/A)/unit greenness is discerned for the relation between yield and spectral greenness. Tests at both a smaller scale on sets of field-level spectal data and yield and at a large scale on 25 mi. x 25 mi. gridded spectral data from the NOAA-6 AVHRR sensor support the relation. The implications of these results to yield estimation from satellite spectral data are discussed.

Description: Large-area relations between satellite spectral data and end-of-season crop yield were investigated. Green Index Number (GIN) values from Landsat MSS data of sample segments throughout the U.S. Great Plains winter wheat belt in 1978 were correlated to county USDA-SRS reported yields. A linear relation between GIN and yield appeared to exist up to GIN values of 40 or 50, covering cases of severe to moderate stress. In a test on 1978 Texas winter wheat at the county level, GIN values for sample segments in the counties were used in conjunction with an agronomic-meteorological yield model. The combined fit explained significantly more of the observed yield variation at the county level than the agromet model alone.

Description: Large internal solitary waves have been observed by Shuttle SIR-A and SIR-B at locations in the Andaman Sea and the New York Bight. Satellite imagery and oceanographic measurements are used in conjunction with hydrodynamic interaction and electromagnetic scattering models to estimate the expected SAR image intensity modulations associated with the internal waves. There is reasonable agreement between the predicted and observed internal wave signatures.
