Summary Various volatile radiolytic products formed in the gamma-radiolysis ofortho-, meta- andpara- dinitrobenzene solutions in carbon tetrachloride are identified using a combined system of gas chromatography-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry-mass spectrometry. Tetrachloroethylene; hexachloro-ethane; isomeric chloronitrobenzenes; di-, tri-, tetra- and pentachlorobenzenes; chloro- and dichloro-isocyanatobenzene; and 1-chloro-2-(trichloromethyl)-benzene are among the most important products formed in the radiolysis.Ipso-substitution of one and both the nitro groups, as well as hydrogen atom by chlorine atom and trichloromethyl free radical is observed. It is postulated that isomeric chloro-isocyanatobenzenes are formed by the interaction of dichlorocarbene and isomeric dinitrobenzenes.
