Description: At the National Park, Cienaga de Zapata inhabits the land crab (Cardisoma guanhumi, Lattreille, 1825) constituting a resource of commercial importance. To determinate the average density of the population in the catchment areas Guamutal, El Maiz and La Arenera, it was used an indirect method; it were sampled 11 locations with 81 m2 at febrary/2013 for a total area of 748 m2. Also there were done monthly samples to the capture during the capture season. The caves average density varied from 0,52 to 2,23 caves/m2, with an overall average of 1,43 caves/m2. The area most densely populated was La Arenera with 1,81 caves/m2 and the lower was Bolanio with 0,52 caves/m2. The average diameter of the caves was 10,3±0,34cm, 7,74±0,56cm and 5,59±0,30cm in El Maiz, La Arenera and Guamutal respectively. There is significant difference between the mean diameters. The presence of small diameters caves in Guamutal reinforces the hypothesis that this is the main area of recruitment. The crab average size decrease along the capture season. His capture has a “Free Access” scheme and crab is considered as intensely exploited. The percentage of specimens below the legal minimum size has been increased and therefor the average size has decreased. The crab presence is associated with gender mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa and Conocarpus erectus. In the fauna associated with C. guanhumi there were observed the hermit crabs (Eupagurus sp.), crocodiles (Crocodylus rhombifer) and wild dogs (Canis familiares).

Description: Assessment of marine sites is a priority task in the inventory of potential marine areas for fish farming, which is important in terms of investment costs/operation and profitability derived from the growth and survival of the species to cultivate. In general, the oceanographic characteristics of the site determine the efficiency and technical, operational and economic feasibility of the crop. The potential of open coastal waters adjacent to the town of Boca Ambuila, Cienfuegos, south central region of Cuba was assessed. This was done on the basis of previous studies (2008), oceanographic surveys during dry and in rainy season (April to September 2011), a diurnal cycle of temperature, oxygen and measurement of currents in August 2011. Although average annual temperature in the region is 27.6 to 28.8ºC, mean values of 27.5°C were recorded in April/2011 to 30.9°C in August/2011, and extreme values of dissolved oxygen of 6.9 mg and 4.9 mg L-1 respectively in April and September 2011. The current site reported 10 to 15 cm s-1, but in August 2011 lower values were recorded, with an average of 5.5 cm s-1. Salinity, pH, turbidity, chemical demand (COD) and biological (BOD5) oxygen, nutrients and other hydro-meteorological variables, showed permissible ranges for culturing native fish. Based on the above, the site meets the basic environmental requirements for marine fish farming in floating cages. Plus, in the coastal land area there is an aquaculture facility and suitable conditions for breeding, spawning and larval marine fish farming in a controlled environment.

Description: It was determined the biomass of pink shrimp Farfantepenaeus notialis present in the Gulf of Ana Maria during the period 1997-2010, by means of statistical analysis of catch per ages (SCA). The biomass increased from 2008 as a response to the increment in the recruitment, which showed its highest average annual values during the second semester of that year. The input of recruits (pre-adults) to the fishing area occurs by two main zones, in front of Ana Maria keys and in Santa Cruz Abajo, North of the southern portion of Doce Leguas keys. Fishing at the end of the year may cause an overfishing of the growth, thus affecting the available biomass for the following year.

Description: A scheme of the larval drift and recruitment areas of the land crab Cardisoma guanhumi from the Zapata swamp is presented, considering the spawning migration, the duration of the larval stage and the direction and average speed of marine currents in Cochinos bay. Females travel up to a maximum of 12 km to reach the sea according to the distances of the evaluated colonies. It is recognized that once the spawning occurred in the marine coastal areas of Maquina beach, La Gallina and Gurugú, north of Cochinos bay, surface circulation of marine waters is responsible for the distribution of larvae, whose route according to surface drift and larval recruitment zones of the species occur from north to south of Cochinos bay for areas of the western zone. The distribution and estimated population structure suggest that there is a main recruitment in the area of Guamutal and La Arenera from where a displacement occurs to other areas that constitute critical habitats of the species. The information related to the reproductive migration and larval drift of C. guanhumi crab, is important for the sustainable management of the species and a baseline for potential capture regulations according to critical areas of the life cycle in the Zapata swamp region.
