    Notes: Summary Efficiency of indirect selection compared with that of direct selection to increase the mean value of some trait has been usually studied by considering a single generation of indirect and direct responses to selection only. However, under continued selection, genetic variances and covariances, and therefore expected genetic responses, change each generation due to linkage disequilibrium. With directional and truncation selection, genetic parameters asymptote to limiting values after several generations. The efficiency of indirect selection is examined in this limiting situation. The ratio of correlated response to direct response for the trait to improve in the limit is compared with the ratio after the first generation of selection. For all initial parameter values for which indirect selection is more efficient than direct selection, relative efficiency of indirect selection is smaller in the limit than in the first generation. For some parameter values, indirect selection is more efficient than direct selection in the first generation, but less efficient in the limit. Expressions for minimum values of the initial genetic correlation and heritability of the alternative trait required for indirect selection to be preferred in the limit are derived. These values are higher when limiting responses are used instead of single generation responses. The loss in relative efficiency of indirect selection from changes in genetic parameters due to selection should be taken into account when applications of indirect selection are considered.

    Notes: Summary Changes in genetic parameters of correlated traits due to the buildup of linkage (gametic phase) disequilibrium from repeated truncation selection on a single trait are studied. After several generations of selection, an equilibrium is approached where there are no further changes in genetic parameters and limiting values are reached. Formulae are derived under an infinitesimal model for these limiting values of genetic variances and covariances, heritabilities, and genetic correlations between traits directly and indirectly selected. Changes from generation zero to the limit in all these parameters become greater as heritability of the trait under direct selection increases and, to a lesser extent, as intensity of selection increases. Change in heritability of a trait under indirect selection also increases as the absolute value of the correlation between the trait under indirect and the trait under direct selection increases. The change is maximum when the initial value of heritability is close to 0.5 and insignificant when the initital value is close to zero or one. Change in the genetic correlation between the trait under direct selection and the trait under indirect selection is maximum when its initial value is close to ±0.6 and insignificant when its initial value is close to zero or ±1. Heritability of the trait indirectly selected and genetic correlation between that trait and the trait directly selected always decrease in absolute value, whereas genetic correlation between two traits indirectly selected can either decrease or increase in absolute value. It is suggested that use be made of formulae at selection equilibrium in the prediction of correlated responses after several generations of selection.

    Notes: Summary Asymmetry in correlated responses to selection is expected when more than one cycle of selection is practised due to changes in genetic parameters produced by selection. In large populations, under the infinitesimal model these changes are due to linkage disequilibrium generated by selection and not to gene frequency changes. This study examines the conditions under which asymmetrical correlated responses are to be expected when an infinitesimal model is considered. Asymmetrical correlated responses in two traits in respect to which trait is selected are expected if the two traits have different heritabilities. Predicted asymmetry increases with the absolute value of the genetic correlation between the two traits, the difference between the two heritabilities, the intensity of selection and the number of generations of selection. Linkage disequilibrium generated by selection should be taken into account in explaining asymmetrical correlated responses observed in selection experiments.

    Notes: Abstract Trichome exudate compounds isolated from leaves ofNicotiana tabacum, N. glutinosa (accessions 24 and 24a), and 21 otherNicotiana species were evaluated for biorational activity againstC. lagenarium, the anthracnose pathogen of cucumber. Exudate compounds tested were the cembrane diterpenes α- and β-4,8,13-duvatriene-1,3-diols (DVT diols); the labdane diterpenes (13-E)-labda-13-ene-8α,15-diol (labdenediol) and (13-R)-labda-14-ene-8α, 13-diol (sclareol); extracts fromN. gossei; and various sugar ester isolates. In dose-response experiments test compounds were applied to a water agar surface that was then inoculated with a conidial suspension. Low levels of most test compounds reduced or completely inhibited germination ofC. lagenarium conidia. IC50 values, concentrations (micrograms per square centimeter) at which conidium germination was reduced 50%, were 6.3 for DVT diols, 19.3 for sclareol, 1.0 for labdenediol, 2.8 for a mixture of sclareol and labdenediol, 1.2 for anN. gossei sucrose ester and 4.1 for theN. gossei crude extract. Higher levels of DVT diols and the sclareol-labdenediol mixture were required to reduce lesion size and number on inoculated cucumber leaves. At the highest concentration tested, 100 µg/cm2, the DVT diols and sclareol-labdenediol mixtures protected cucumbers against lesion development by 93 and 98%, respectively. Sugar ester mixtures from 20Nicotiana species and three different sugar ester fractions fromN. bideglovii had in vitro antifungal activity at a concentration of 48 µg/cm2. Sugar esters from nine of the species includingN. acuminata, N. attenuata, N. clevelandii, N. maritima, N. miersii, N. noctiflora, N. occidentalis, N. rustica, and fractions 10, 12, and 13 fromN. bideglovii completely inhibitedC. lagenarium conidium from germinating. Sugar ester mixtures from only four species,N. plumbaginifolia, N. bonariensis, N. simulans, andN. palmerii, had no significant effect onC. lagenarium conidium germination. These results suggest the potential ofNicotiana exudates as biorationals in reducing disease development.

The leaf surface compounds includedα- andβ-4,8,13,-duvatriene-l,3-diols (DVT-diols), (13-E)-labda-13-ene-8α-,15-diol (labdenediol), (12-Z)-labda-12,14-diene-8α-ol (cis-abienol), (13-R)-labda-8,14-diene-13-ol (manool), 2-hydroxymanool, a mixture of (13-R)-labda-14-ene-8α,13-diol (sclareol), and (13-S)-labda-14-ene-8α,13-diol (episclareol), and various glucose and/or sucrose ester isolates. The above in acetone were applied onto leaf disks of the blue moldsusceptibleN. tabacum cv. TI 1406, which was then inoculated with blue mold sporangia. Estimated IC50 values (inhibitory concentration) were 3.0μg/cm2 forα-DVT-diol, 2.9μ/cm2 forβ-DVT-diol, 0.4μg/cm2 for labdenediol and 4.7μg/cm2 for the sclareol mixture. Manool, 2-hydroxymanool, andcis-abienol at application rates up to 30μg/cm2 had little or no effect on sporangium germination. Glucose and/or sucrose ester isolates from the cuticular leaf extracts of 23Nicotiana species and three different fractions fromN. bigelovii were also evaluated for antimicrobial activity at a concentration of 30μg/cm2. Germination was inhibited by 〉20% when exposed to sugar esters isolated fromN. acuminata, N. benthamiana, N. attenuata, N. clevelandii, andN. miersii, and accessions 10 and 12 ofN. bigelovii. These results imply that a number of compounds may influence resistance to blue mold in tobacco.

    Description: Literature Xe data for the Angra dos Reis meteorite have been resolved into constituent spallation, fission and trapped components. The spallation Xe compositions vary over a range wider than observed in any other samples, including lunar samples. These variations are due to the mixing of spallation Xe from Ba and rare earth element targets. It is possible to infer the Ba and rare earth spallation Xe compositions. Angra dos Reis spallation Xe compositions are systematically different from those observed in lunar samples, possibly because of differences in the irradiation conditions (geometry and shielding). Thus the Angra dos Reis data appear to be superior to lunar data for predicting spallation Xe compositions in other meteorites.

    Description: This paper presents noble-gas (neon, krypton, and xenon) data obtained in stepwise heating of five lunar breccias: 14063, 14082, 15205, 15405, and 15445. These data are discussed in terms of spallation gas content, cosmic-ray exposure ages, and content of fission xenon. None of these samples is rich in solar-wind gases, and none contains more fission xenon than would be expected for in situ fission of U-238 and Pu-244. The essential features of the excess-fission-xenon phenomenon seen in several Apollo 14 samples are reviewed, as are models which might account for this phenomenon and criteria by which these models may be evaluated. The lack of excess fission xenon in 14063 and 14082 eliminates models relying on microscale xenon redistribution. A model is proposed in which the excess fission xenon originates in local material and percolates through and is adsorbed on regolith material.

    Description: The iodine isotopic compositions and corresponding I-Xe ages were obtained for eight enstatite chondrites, bringing the total number of enstatite chondrites examined by the I-Xe technique to 11. Iodine isotopic compositions of these 11 chondrites indicate a well-defined hiatus correlated with the hiatus in chemical composition defining the two distinct enstatite groups: EH(4,5) and EL(6). Judging by the I-129/I-127 ratios and assuming that both the EH and EL groups originated from a reservoir with a uniform initial iodine isotopic composition, the EH(4,5) chondrites were estimated to be about 4 mln older than the El chondrites.

    Description: Xenon released in stepwise heating of troctolite 76535 shows remarkable similarity to that from the gas-rich breccias. The low temperature fractions are highly enriched in fissiogenic xenon from Pu-244. Although the quantity of fission xenon is not inconsistent with reported age data, release patterns demonstrate that this component is not due to in situ decay. However, in contrast with the gas-rich breccias, the parentless radionuclear component in 76535 is not accompanied by solar wind xenon. Mechanisms for the emplacement of this component in 76535 cannot, therefore, involve exposure on the lunar surface but most likely involve adsorption along intergranular boundaries or thermally driven redistribution. The fact that xenon released from a gas-poor igneous cumulate can mimic that from gas-rich breccias, except for the presence of solar wind xenon in the latter, suggests that direct exposure to space is not required for the incorporation of these weakly bound, surface-correlated, parentless radionuclear components in lunar samples.
