Notes: Abstract We have further characterized the functionality of theSaccharomyces cerevisiae geneSLT2(MPK1), coding for a MAP-kinase homolog essential for cell integrity, which is involved in the Pkc1p signalling pathway. This gene was isolated on the basis of its capacity to complement the thermosensitive-autolytic, osmotic-remediable phenotype oflyt2 mutants. Bothslt2A andlyt2 mutants displayed a caffeine-sensitive phenotype consisting of cell lysis that was not dependent on temperature. Caffeine concentrations affecting the growth of these mutant strains were dependent on the genetic background, theSSD1 allele being very significant in this regard. TheSLT2 allele of severallyt2 strains was both rescued and amplified by PCR. The recovered allele was shown to be non-functional as it could not complement the lytic phenotype of both deletion (slt2Δ) andlyt2 strains. After nucleotide sequencing of the recovered allele, we found that the defect oflyt2 mutants consists in a substitution of an aspartic acid for a glycine at position 35 of the amino-acid sequence of Slt2p. Gly35 is the third glycine of a glycine cluster (Gly-X-Gly-X-X-Gly), a conserved region in protein kinases and other nucleotide-binding proteins.

Description: The benthic communities distribution in Tesoro Island (Colombian Caribbean) coral reef was determinad by cartography of reef morphology and functional groups from aerial photographs, theodolite triangulation, and bottom transects over depths ranging from O to 30 m. Tesoro Island is a sand cay reef developed over an emerged reef platform whose basal cone possibly originated by mud diapirism on the continental shelf. The benthic communities are distributed as subzones of the geomorphologic units. The reef crest lies along the breaker zone, formed by Millepora spp. buttresses covered on their tops by Palythoa spp. and seawardly by a turf of Dictyota spp. The rear reef (varying from 0.5-1.5 m ¡n depth) is composed of pavement and grooves with live Porites porites and P. astreoides. The fore-reef terrace (2 to 9 m in depth) shows a low relief spur and grooves, composed of Acropora palmata skeletons ón the windward side and A. cervicornis on the leeward side; sandy accumulations with dense and tall colonies of the gorgonaceans Pseudopterogorgia spp. are also appreciated. In the sandy reef platform there are monospecific patches of Montastraea annularis, P. porites, M. faveolata, dead Acropora cervicornis and wide sandy zones where patches of Halimeda monite are found. The slope edge, (depths ranging between 7 to 〉 30m) shows mixed corals and gorgonaceans, at the drop-off, laminar corals, especially Montastraea franksi and Agaricia spp., jointly with other deep water organisms such as ellisellid gorgonaceans and antipatharians are found. The benthic communities distribution is influenced by reef geomorphology, wave energy diffraction and the past mass mortality of Acropora.

Description: Through SCUBA and skin diving various shallow water ecosystems (rocky shores, soft bottoms and coral reefs, 0-30 m deep) were surveyed to collect telestaceans and penatulaceans octocorals; the áreas considered were Cartagena, the Rosario islands, Tierra Bomba island, Barú ¡sland, San Bernardo islands, Bushnell and Salmedina banks, Capurganá and Zapzurro harbours (8°20'-10°45' N; 75°50'-77°25' W), the Santa Marta área (11°14'50" N; 74°15' W) y and the Guajira (11°56'58" N; 72°16'18" W), Colombian Caribbean. Sfy/afu/a diadema Bayer (Virgulariidae: Pennatulacea) is first recorded for the Caribbean sea and has been found inhabiting soft sand bottoms between 25 and 30 m, at the outer end of Cartagena Bay and the Mangles Bank in San Bernardo islands. The geographic distribution of Carijoa riisei (Duchassaing y Michelotti) (Telestidae: Telestacea) was widen from the Caribbean and Colombia, it has been found in a broad bathymetric range (0.5-30 m) in all the habitats surveyed. Few records of telestaceans and pennatulaceans in this region, as in the rest of the Caribbean, suggest that the octocorallian fauna is mostly represented by gorgonians than by other orders, and shows an inverse relationships with the Indopacific fauna, where the alcyonaceans are tthe dominant order.
