Notes: The effect of correlation energy, basis set size, zero-point energy (ZPE) correction, and solvation on the reaction mechanism of the ketene-imine cycloaddition reaction has been investigated. The electrostatic solvent effect was studied with a self-consistent reaction field method in which the solvation energy is obtained using a multipole expansion of the molecular charge distribution. The ab initio results have been analyzed by means of a theoretical method based on the expansion of the MOs of the supermolecule in terms of those of the reactants and the performance of the configuration analysis. In gas phase, due to the correlation energy and/or the ZPE corrections, the reaction is predicted to be a one-step process. In solution, the stabilization of the charge-transferred configurations results in the occurrence of a very stable, Zwitterionic intermediate giving a two-step mechanism. © 1994 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The algebra of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator is exploited to obtain matrix elements between eigenstates of the Morse potential. This follows after mapping the latter into the radial equation of the former problem by means of a change of variable and the use of the angular variable as a dummy variable.

Notes: A set of 20 nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, whose mutagenicity has been determined in the Ames test, has been studied using octanol-water partition coefficients (P) as a measure of relative hydrophobicity and molecular orbital energies to account for variation in their electronic characteristics. A good structure-activity relationship was found using log P and ∊LUMO. The latter were taken from the results of ab initio calculations performed by Maynard, Pedersen, Posner, and McKinney [7] and were also calculated by the MNDO method. The dependence of mutagenicity on hydrophobicity was found to be similar to that observed for triazenes [2]. ∊LUMO values calculated by MNDO and STO-3G were found to be strongly correlated, and the role of hydrophobicity in correlating mutagenicity was not significantly affected by the molecular orbital model employed.

Notes: A one-range expansion of the 0s-STO - previously reported by us - is employed to derive explicit expressions for the elements of auxiliary matrices - appearing in the calculation of one- and two-electron multicenter integrals with STOS - in the form of infinite series. Then, we are able to perform the formal summation of the series giving both closed expressions for these elements and several relations between them. A computational algorithm based on these formal developments is proposed and its numerical behavior is analyzed.

Notes: Local and nonlocal density functional computations have been carried out to study the electronic structure and the equilibrium geometry of the isoelectronic series Cr(NC)4, Mn(NO)3(CO), Fe(NO)2(CO)2, and Co(NO)(CO)3 and model compounds Fe(NO)2L2 (L = Cl, HCN, NH3, PH3, and C2H4). The structure of Fe(NO)2(C4H6) is also described. The discussion is focused on structural modifications through a change of ligand, in particular those concerning the metal-nitrosyl conformation (linear vs. bent). Though this is a preliminary study of metal-nitrosyl properties by DFT methods and more computations are required to analyze the mechanism of homogeneous catalysis processes, our results support the hypothesis that structural reorganization from linear to bent metal-nitrosyl plays a key role in some reactions, such as in butadiene dimerization. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The local-scaling transformation version of density functional theory (LS-DFT) is reviewed. It is shown that in the context of LS-DFT it is possible to construct N-representable energy density functionals and that the theory provides systematic ways for calculating strict upper bounds to the exact energies. The importance of the concept of “orbit” in LS-DFT is indicated and several approaches leading to intraorbit and interorbit optimization are discussed. Results of the application of these optimization procedures to the determination of upper bounds for the ground-state energy of the beryllium atom are given. Also, numerical results are reported on the use of local scaling transformations for the direct solution of the Kohn-Sham equations via the density-constrained minimization of the kinetic energy of a noninteracting system. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The vibrational frequencies of NaN clusters (2 ≤ N ≤ 72) are calculated by direct diagonalization of the dynamical matrix. Density functional theory with a spherically averaged pseudopotential is used to compute the total energy. The geometry is optimized by the simulated annealing technique. Contributions to the Hessian matrix due to electron relaxation following the ionic displacements are calculated in linear response theory. The frequencies are in the range 0-220 cm-1 and the electron relaxation strongly modifies those of the modes dominated by radial oscillations, particularly the breathing mode frequencies that are proportional to N-1/3. The filling of atomic shells produces a stepwise behavior of the highest frequencies. The giant dipole resonance energies are obtained as a byproduct of the calculation. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The collective electronic response of NanKn clusters has been studied for some model structures. In their low-temperature lowest-energy structure, those clusters have all the K atoms on the surface. The collective oscillation frequencies for clusters with the K atoms segregated to the surface are red-shifted with respect to the corresponding frequencies for isomers with a very similar underlying skeleton but with the Na atoms segregated to the surface. The collective frequency varies smoothly with respect to the degree of relative segregation. These results may be useful in the analysis of the collective response of large alloy clusters and microcrystals. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In a previous paper we proposed a new electrostatic description of the molecular electronic density in terms of charges, dipoles, quadrupoles, octupoles, etc. In this paper we apply this analysis to some first members of alkanic, ethylenic, acetylenic, alcoholic, aldehyde, amine, and nitrile series. Results show the clear transferability of the atomic descriptions for chemically similar atoms as well as the remarkable sensitivity of the electronic density versus changes in the basis sets, pointed out in our previous work. We discuss the calculation of molecular potentials from these atomic descriptions (and present an example) and some practical applications.
