Description / Table of Contents: An Oxychloride of Calcium: Ca4OCl6Ca4OCl6 (hexagonal, P63mc, Z = 2), a = 905.8(3), c = 686.3(4) pm, (R = 0.031) crystallizes as colourless needles from reducing melts (CaCl2, Ca) that contain small amounts of „oxygen“. It contains „isolated“ tetrahedral units [Ca4O] and is isotypic with e.g., Ba4OCl6, Yb4OCl6 and K6HgS4. Ca4OCl6 does not form in the dehydration process of, for example, CaCl2 · 6 H2O.
B. CaCl2 · 6 H2O.

Notes: A formalism is developed for the construction of relativistic symmetry-adapted molecular basis functions under consideration of time reversal invariance. The theory is applicable to the finite double point groups Cn, Cnh, Sn, Cnv, Dn, Dnd, Dnh, T, Th, Td, O, and Oh. It is based on the LCAO method. A projection operator technique is employed to construct molecular symmetry orbitals from atomic orbitals. The search for linearly independent basis function is simplified by means of group theoretical considerations.

Notes: A molecular mechanical force field for fluorinated ethylenes and propylenes is described. The field computes geometries, dipole moments, and energy differences between isomers and rotamers. Component analysis indicates that “classical” strains alone (skeletal, nonbonded, electrostatic) cannot account for energy relationships. The discussion is supplemented by a semiempirical quantum chemical comparison of cis- and trans-FCH=CHF and of gauche- and anti-FCH2CH2F.

Notes: Molecular mechanical calculations for hetero-substituted hydrocarbons present certain difficulties that are not encountered in dealing with hydrocarbons. Ways are proposed to overcome such difficulties, sometimes by two-step or iterative computation. The following topics are considered: fitting the force field by using data from studies in solution; ways to estimate atomic charges or, alternatively, bond moments; ways to account for field effects upon atomic charges and bond moments.

Notes: It is noticed that inclusion of an electrostatic term in the molecular-mechanical treatment of hydrocarbons would compel the nonbonding parameters of different force fields to become more alike than they are at present. Apart from removing the discontinuity in passing from the calculation of an unfunctionalized parent compound to the calculation of its functionalized derivatives, it is expected that the inclusion would improve results for the hydrocarbons themselves.

Notes: With a view of using data on solutions and liquids for parameter fitting in molecular mechanical force fields, Abraham's theory of solvation is incorporated in the force field procedure. Geometries and bond moments are estimated internally, partial account being taken of bond-bond induction, and used to calculate the intramolecular electrostatic energy, dipole moment, and the dipole and quadrupole terms in the solvation energy. Three dielectric constants are used, one for the solute in the vapor, one for the solution, and one for the intramolecular space through which dipole-dipole interactions take place. Examples are given, including such where computation differs with measurement, to illustrate the performance of the scheme.

Notes: A 31.5 picosecond (ps) MD calculation has been completed for the 1:1 enzyme-ligand complex between porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) and acetyl-alanine-proline-alanine (APA). The 1:2 complex studied crystallographically at product saturation conditions precludes the study of a 1:1 complex (PPE and APA1); this objective has been achieved by computational methods described here. The acetyl group of the ligand was found to occupy two neighboring sites, one within the primary specificity site and the other out into solution. The primary change of the ligand structure is ψ1 torsion angle being 171.5°. Supported by an interactive graphic display, the dynamical fluctuations of a smaller ligand compared with the width of the active site as PPE were observed by the MD simulation, although the complex has not been detected by any spectroscopic method.

Notes: Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (C—I—P) rules 1 and 2 (material differences) have been expressed in the formal logic of a high-level computer language (FORTRAN IV) on a laboratory minicomputer (PDP 11/40) by the program CHIRAL. An oversight in the C—I—P formalism in the treatment of rings was treated on an ad hoc basis; the problem has been expressed simply in terms of elementary graph theory in a way consistent with and similar to chemical notation. An example of the operation of CHIRAL is provided and the internal procedures discussed.

Notes: We apply Shanno's conjugate gradient algorithm to the problem of minimizing the potential energy function associated with molecular mechanical calculations. Shanno's algorithm is stable with respect to roundoff errors and inexact line searches and converges rapidly to a minimum. Equally important, this algorithm can improve the rate of convergence to a minimum by a factor of 5 relative to Fletcher-Reeves or Polak-Ribière minimizers when used within the molecular mechanics package AMBER. Comparable improvements are found for a limited number of simulations when the Polak-Ribière direction vector is incorporated into the Shanno algorithm.

Notes: A nonanalytical procedure is proposed to calculate the surface area and cross-sectional areas of molecules. Results are reviewed for about 70 species comprising alkanes, acyclic and cyclic, alkyl halides, and alcohols. By regression analysis, relationships are detected between surface areas or segment areas and physical properties. Computed cross-sectional areas are confronted with adsorption values. Four ways are proposed to define quantitatively the intuitive notion of «molecular globularity».
