Abstract Methods are developed to determine axial gas flow conditions within a weakly buoyant plume that passes from an ambient quiescent environment, in which the plume originates, to an upper layer at elevated temperatures. The methods are appropriate for inclusion in two-layer analysis of enclosure fire. In particular, they are first steps in developing a prediction of actuation time for thermally activated automatic sprinklers exposed to an enclosure fire. Results obtained with various methods are compared with measurements in a 1.22 m diameter cylindrical enclosure.
