Notizen: Melting and glass transition data are reported employing DSC for styrene-grafted high-density polyethylene obtained by γ radiation. Judging from the data of the melting point and the heat of fusion, the grafted polystyrene had no effect on the polyethylene crystallites, but the half-width of the thermogram was observed to increase slightly, showing an effect on the crystallite size distribution. As no effect was observed on the glass transition temperature by grafting, the amorphous region of the polyethylene apparently was not affected. It is suggested, therefore, that the free volume or segmental mobility will not be decreased by radiation-induced grafting. Very few but long grafted chains had negligible effect on the average polyethylene chain length available for segmental motion, and grafted polystyrene should be expected to differ little from the styrene homopolymer in thermal motions.

Notizen: Summary The mitochondria-rich (chloride) cells have been found to be present in the gill epithelia of four species of stenohaline fresh water teleosts. The cytoplasm of these chloride cells contains an extensive network of cytoplasmic tubules which communicate with intercellular spaces bordering the lateral and basal cell surfaces. Numerous vesicles with fairly electron-dense interiors are also present in the apical cytoplasm of chloride cells. The apical surface of a chloride cell forms an apical pit, but the lumen of the pit does not appear to be in continuity with the interior of the apical vesicles and tubules inside the cell. When Carassius auratus were kept in 100, 200, 300, and 400 mOsm-diluted sea water for a month, no appreciable changes occurred in the number and fine structure of the chloride cells, except for a dilation of the apical vesicles and a slight decrease in diameter of the cytoplasmic tubules in these cells in the fishes kept in 300 and 400 mOsm. These results suggest that chloride cells may be a rather common occurrence in the gill epithelia of stenohaline fresh water teleosts, and may function in ion-transport in these fishes in fresh water environments.

Notizen: The solution of charged sodium dextran sulfate (molecular weight 6000) co-reacted with that of oppositely charged chitosan to form a water-insoluble hydrous complex, whose clot-inhibiting property was sensitive to such reaction conditions as the order of mixing, the kind of acid species used for the adjustment of pH, and the concentration of hydrogen ion at which the preparation of polyelectrolyte complex was carried out, although all the polyelectrolyte complexes were prepared from the same starting materials. In order to clarify the relationship between the molecular conformation of the polyelectrolyte complex and its clot-inhibiting property, ir spectroscopic studies, in vitro blood-clotting tests, color reaction with toluidine blue, elemental analyses, and so on, were performed. Consequently, it was suggested that the polyelectrolyte complexes consisting of sodium dextran sulfate of lower molecular weight are more clot-inhibiting than those with higher molecular weight. It was also found that polyelectrolyte complexes prepared under the mixing order of sodium dextran sulfate solution added to chitosan solution are also more clot-inhibiting than those prepared under the reverse mixing order, chitosan solution added to sodium dextran sulfate solution. Furthermore, it has become apparent that the anticlotting polyelectrolyte complexes have some characteristic ir absorption bands, and that they displayed color reaction with toluidine blue. A new possibility may be anticipated from our experimental results, providing important information relating to realizing a functional polymer, antithrombogenic material, whose property may be ordered.

Notizen: Solutions of sodium dextran sulfate and chitosan were co-reacted under various experimental conditions to form a water-insoluble hydrous precipitate. The mole ratios of N/S in the polyelectrolyte complexes were estimated to be 0,79 to 2,54 depending on pH as well as on the mixing ratio of the complexing components. IR spectroscopic studies, blood test, elementary analyses, color reactions with toluidine blue, and the studies on solubility revealed that two polyelectrolyte complexes, different in molecular structure, were formed: series A and B (Tab. 1), where the latter emerged at lower pH condition. It seems that the number of binding sites between —NH3+ and —OSO-3 in B series is smaller than that in A series, considering their nitrogen content or the formation of OSO3H groups in B series. Furthermore, the polyelectrolyte complexes of A series rather suppressed the coagulation of blood, whereas those of B series enhanced it. The mechanism is still not completely elucidated. Nonetheless, the experimental results appear to open an important reservoir of anti-thrombogenetic materials whose properties may be tailored.
