    Notes: By experimental means a relation is obtained between the thermal resistance of an eddy and its angular momentum. The eddy is stationary, and no extraneous motion is present. The secondary motion which may develop in the annulus between concentric rotating cylinders is used to obtain the eddies. The fluid motion is well defined at all times and at all points of space. Heat is passed through the eddies, and the Nusselt number is obtained, which varies linearly with the angular momentum. Both Nusselt number and angular momentum vary linearly with the peripheral velocity of the inner rotating cylinder, which can be interpreted in terms of a Reynolds number associated with fluid flow perpendicular to a cylinder.

    Notes: A thermal continuous parametric pump for separating multicomponent mixtures was experimentally investigated using the model system tolueneaniline-n-heptane on silica gel adsorbent. A simple method for predicting separations is presented and is found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The method, based on an equilibrium theory, invokes the assumption that a multicomponent mixture contains a series of pseudo binary systems. Each binary system consists of one of the solutes as one component and the common inert solvent as the other component.

    Notes: A new numerical method is proposed for the one-dimensional melting problem. Unlike many of the existing numerical techniques which either immobilize the moving interface by a suitable coordinate transformation or search for the moving interface under a fixed grid, fixed-time-step finite-difference formulation, the present method was a fixed grid, variable time-step approach. Each time step in the computation is determined iteratively by requiring that the interface be located at a mesh point, one grid space from the previous interface location.Results of two sample calculations show that the present method is superior to the conventional finite-difference method both in its accuracy and computational efficiency. The formulation is mathematically simple and can be applied with no difficulty to problems with nonplanar geometry and initial subcooling. The present method is applied to the analysis of the melting of a finite slab subjected to a constant heat flux boundary condition. Some interesting effects of initial subcooling on the physics of melting are illustrated and discussed.

    Notes: A study was made of the deviation between the temperature of thermocouple junctions and the temperature of the fluid surrounding them which arises as a result of conduction along the thermocouple leads. Measurements around a 1/2-in. heated sphere in the plane of the equator normal to an air stream having a velocity of 16 ft./sec. were made with a 0.001-in.-diam. thermocouple of platinum and platinum rhodium. Air temperatures in the boundary flows of the sphere were predicted from the indications of the thermocouple. The method of prediction employed also determined the heat transfer coefficients for the thermocouple wire in the boundary layer. These local heat transfer coefficients are lower than those observed in a uniform stream having a velocity equal to the estimated local velocity in the boundary layer.

    Notes: The effect of uniformity of fluidization on the catalytic cracking of cumene, with a silicaalumina catalyst, was studied in a 3-in.-diameter reactor operated at 800°F. Superficial gas velocities were varied from 0.06 to 0.24 ft./sec. for bed heights of 1.5, 3, 5, and 8 in. The percentage conversion in a fluidized bed was found to be lower than in a fixed bed and to be dependent on the type of catalyst support used. A porous plate support was up to 30% more efficient than a screen support, which is attributed to its better gas-distribution characteristics and to its ability to introduce the discontinuous phase as smaller gas bubbles. Indications are that the first few inches of bed are very effective in bringing in contact the continuous and discontinuous phase, and therefore most of the conversion due to the interaction of the two phases takes place here. This can be explained in terms of the rapid growth of gas bubbles as they proceed through the bed.

    Notes: Velocity profile data were taken in both phases of a cocurrent stratified flow system of two immiscible liquids in the turbulent regime. The data were correlated by a method which combined Pai's results for Poiseuille and Couette flows between parallel plates, resulting in values of the drag coefficients for the wall and interface for both phases. These and other dependent parameters were correlated with flow conditions over a range of flow rates for both phases. Correlations of all parameters except the interfacial drag coefficient were found to be symmetrical; that is, a given correlation applied equally well to data from either phase. The interfacial drag coefficient, on the other hand, depended primarily upon the flow intensity of the upper phase, in a manner which was further dependent upon which phase was the faster.
