Description / Table of Contents: E.M.F. Measurements with Bromine Electrodes in Concentration Cells of Molten Alkali Bromide - Alkaline Earth Bromide MixturesAn experimental arrangement is described to measure the e.m.f. of concentration cells with transference of the type \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm C,}\,{\rm Br}_{\rm 2} /{\rm MBr//MBr - M'Br}_{\rm 2} /{\rm Br}_2,\,{\rm C} $$\end{document}(M = alkali metal, M′ = alkaline earth metal).By measurements on the formation cell of PbBr2 the reversibility of the bromine electrodes have been proved. The e.m.f. values increase with the concentration of alkaline earth bromide in the mixtures NaBr-(CaBr2, SrBr2, BaBr2) and KBr-(CaBr2, SrBr2, BaBr2) having been investigated. The results are reproducible in the limits of 0.5…1.0 mV and 1…3 mV for lower and higher concentrations of alkaline earth bromide respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrical Transport Properties of Molten Alkali Bromide - Alkaline Earth Bromide Binary MixturesFrom e.m.f. measurements of concentration cells with transference of the systems NaBr- (CaBr2, SrBr2, BaBr2) and KBr- (CaBr2, SrBr2, BaBr2) in connection with thermodynamic activity data and equivalent conductivities, the internal transference numbers, excess transference numbers and the relative cation-anion mobilities were calculated by using the well-known relations. For all mixtures the excess transport numbers are greater than zero, show maxima values in the range of 30…40 mole percent alkaline earth bromide. The mobilities of the alkali ions decrease in all systems with increasing alkaline earth content. The mobility behaviour of the alkaline earth ions varies with their ionic radius. With increasing mole fraction of alkali bromide the mobility of the calcium ions decreases, that of the barium ions increases in the region of high alkali bromide concentrations and that of the strontium ions remains approximately constant in the system containing NaBr and decreases in the system with KBr.
