Notes: Dendritic polymers are highly branched structures with globular shape and high number of functionalities. In a divergent or convergent stepwise synthesis perfect macromolecules with controlled size and architecture are obtained. From the broad variety of dendrimer structures some examples are given and the properties of these unusual polymers are illustrated. For comparison the hyperbranched polymers, dendritic structures with defects made in a one-pot polycondensation reaction, are discussed. Differences and conformities of properties like molecular weight distributions, functionalities, solubility, viscosity behavior and glass transition temperatures for both globular polymer structures are explained.

Notes: As in the case of fibers, the mechanical properties of plastic composites containing mica flakes are extremely sensitive to flake orientation in the direction of an applied stress, so that even a small angular displacement can cause major reductions in the strength, modulus, and fracture toughness. In order to encourage parallel alignment of mica flakes in a thermoplastic composite, two methods of flow orientation were examined. In the first series, rectangular billets of mica-filled, high-density polyethylene were hot-pressed in order to cause longitudinal melt flow in a narrow channel. A parallel series of experiments was also carried out with mica-filled polypropylene in which the composite was extruded and calendered into a thin, continuous strip. In both processing techniques, the resulting extensional flow produced large increases in the tensile and flexural properties. The performance of the mica-filled poly-propylene was limited by its tendency to fibrillate during rolling. Drop-impact measurements recorded a four-fold increase in fracture toughness. The increased tensile and flexural properties were attributed to both the greater degree of parallel alignment of the mica flakes and the increased molecular orientation in the direction of flow. Such flow orientation methods appear necessary if the full benefit of mica-flake reinforcement is to be achieved.

Notes: Wholly aromatic polyamides, including poly(1,4-phenyleneisophthalamide) and poly(1,4-phenyleneterephthalamide) are N-methylated to render them soluble in N,N-dimethylformamide, a common size-exclusion chromatography eluent. The procedure N-methylates 50-55% of the total amide linkages in these two examples, permitting reproducible measurement of their absolute molecular weight distributions using differential viscometry detection. There is no observable degradation in molecular weight resulting from the N-methylation, provided the excess methylating reagent is destroyed shortly after completion of the derivatization by quenching with potassium acetate. The validity of the molecular weight data obtained by the method is confirmed by light-scattering measurements on derivatized polymer and by comparison to the molecular weight of underivatized polymer that can be approximated from the intrinsic viscosity in concentrated sulfuric acid. The method is applicable to a variety of wholly aromatic polyamide structures. Examples are given.

Notes: The load-bearing capabilities of short-fiber reinforced thermoplastics composites can be evaluated, in principle, by the methods known to be satisfactory for unreinforced thermoplastics, but in practice the cost of a comprehensive evaluation of a composite would be prohibitive because of the anisotropy of the properties and its variation from point to point. For the same reasons the properties measured on a specimen cut from a molding may have little relevance to its overall performance. This paper describes recent experiments that could lead to a radical change in testing strategy. Instead of the classical method in which standard specimens cut from moldings are assumed to provide the various stiffness coefficients needed for anisotropic stress analysis, simple moldings such as discs or plaques are tested directly. The sacrifice of precision in the measurements and the loss of rigor in the definition of the measured quantities is more than compensated for by a gain in the general utility of the data and the substantial reduction in the cost of evaluations. The mechanical properties of shortfiber thermoplastics composites are particularly sensitive to mold geometry and the new methods of testing enable the effects to be assessed readily, whereas the information generated by the classical method is virtually indecipherable in that context. Examples are given in the paper.

Notes: The paper discusses the deformational behaviour of thermoplastics, particularly in relation to their utilization through rational engineering design procedures. It describes the comprehensive systems of data that are replacing the old single datum quantities published hitherto and comments briefly on the corrdination of materials testing through the activities of B.S.I. Committee PLC/36.

Notes: Some of the problems associated with the study of failure are reviewed and exemplified by results on two commercial grades of PVC. The whole range of failure phenomena, from crazing to fracture, and the effect of notches on durability is discussed. A test schedule involving minimum experimental effort for the evaluation and comparison of the long term durability of thermoplastic materials is proposed.

Notes: Several high-Tg, phenolic copolymers based on N-(p-hy-droxyphenyl)maleimide with various comonomers were prepared, and the properties of a number of these copolymers were studied. The copolymers were 1:1 in composition and were predominantly alternating. The thermal properties of these copolymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analyses. The chain-stiffening effect of the maleimide group was responsible for Tg's of 200°C and above. Tg was a function of composition and molecular weight. Dissolution rates of thin films of these copolymers were investigated by laser interferometry. The dissolution rates were sensitive to copolymer molecular weight and to the functionality, i. e., the type of phenolic —OH groups and the concentration of —OH groups present. When these copolymers were used as binders for NDS (diazonaphthoquinone sulfonate) photochemistry, high-resolution positive images were obtained that were resistant to thermal deformation at 200°C and above.
