Description: Deterministic chaos in dynamical systems offers a new paradigm for understanding irregular fluctuations. The theory of chaotic dynamical systems includes methods that can test whether any given set of time series data, such as paleoclimate proxy data, are consistent with a deterministic interpretation. Paleoclimate data with annual resolution and absolute dating provide multiple channels of concurrent time series; these multiple time series can be treated as potential phase space coordinates to test whether interannual climate variability is deterministic. Dynamical structure tests which take advantage of such multichannel data are proposed and illustrated by application to a simple synthetic model of chaos, and to two paleoclimate proxy data series.

Notes: Simple graphical methods are given for predicting the effectiveness factors of single reactions in particles of various shapes. A collocation procedure is used for small particles, and the known asymptotic solution is used for large particles. Multiple steady states and variable fluid properties can be handled directly. Examples are given for several nonlinear reaction rate laws.

Notes: A study is made of computational methods for predicting the performance of cylindrical catalyst particles in reactions with nonlinear kinetics. Accurate two-dimensional collocation solutions are obtained and used to test simplified solution methods. A novel parametric integration method is used to traverse the region of multiple solutions. The local stability of several states is determined.

Notes: The convective dispersion of a solute in steady flow through a tube is analyzed, and the concentration profile for any Peclet number is obtained as a convolution of the profile for infinite Peclet number. Close approximations are obtained for the concentration profile and its axial moments, by use of orthogonal collocation in the radial coordinate. The moments thus obtained converge rapidly, and the concentration profile less rapidly, toward exactness as the number of collocation points is increased. A two-point radial grid gives results of practical accuracy; analytical solutions are given at this order of approximation.

Notes: Matched asymptotic solutions are given for the temperature profiles and heat transfer rates in laminar three-dimensional flows with viscous dissipation. The results are asymptotically valid for small thermal diffusivity α; they hold for Newtonian or non-Newtonian fluids. The fluid properties are evaluated at an average temperature for the system; this is satisfactory for moderate temperature differences. Heat transfer formulas for various thermal boundary conditions are included. Several examples are analyzed, including the frictional heating of a polymer melt in flow through a wire-coating die.

Notes: Orthogonal collocation is used to analyze the dispersion and chemical conversion of a multicomponent fluid pulse in a laminar isothermal flow in a catalytic tube. Homogeneous and heterogeneous first-order chemical reactions are included, and a full matrix diffusion law is used. The collocation method represents the dynamics well over wide ranges of system parameters and reaction time. Radial averaging approaches prove less convenient, since the dispersion coefficients thus introduced are complicated functions of time, transport properties and chemical kinetics.
