Notes: In the study of smoke suppressants the measurement of gross amount of smoke from a given sample is essential. However, smoke being a complex phenomenon, its measurement with optical methods presents practical problems. The paper describes a flow system for the measurement of smoke production. Effectiveness of smoke-suppressant formulations for poly(vinyl chloride) as assessed in a flow system is reported. Results of experiments conducted to probe and establish the capability of smoke measurement in a flow system using a helium-neon laser are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Lithium-Kalium-Copolyphosphate mit unterschiedlichem Li:K-Verhältnis wurden infrarotspektroskopisch untersucht.
Notes: Infrared spectral analysis of lithium potassium copolyphosphates with various ratios of Li:K was carried out. The presence of an additional cation did not mask the characteristics of linear long-chain polyphosphates. While the Li:K ratio or the average molecular weight had little influence on the spectrum, the absorbances of all peaks were found to increase with increase in the proportion of potassium.

Notes: Transfer constants were determined from the thermal polymerization of methyl, ethyl, and butyl acrylates for methyl, ethyl, propyl, and isopropyl alcohols at 80 °C, utilising “mixedsolvent” systems wherever necessary. It was observed that the chain transfer constant for alcohols is not much affected by lengthening of the ester group in the acrylates, and the reactivity of the solvent is enhanced by an increased substitution at the α-carbon atom in the alkyl group.

Notes: An ultrathin joint in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) beam was introduced by joining the two pieces using 1,2-dichloroethane. The viscoelastic property of the interfacial region was varied using dioctylphthalate (DOP) plasticizer and flexural waves in the beam were generated by impacting the beam with a small steel ball as well as with a calibrated experimental impact hammer. The acceleration vs. time data of a given point on a beam were used to optimally separate the wave emanating from the joint and were shown to correlate with the mechanical strength of the joint. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Cellulose oxidized with periodate (OC) has been shown to be a biocompatible, biodegradable matrix suitable for immobilization and sustained release of drugs. In the present work, insulin was immobilized on the OC-matrix and the release profile in vivo and in vitro was examined. The hormone is bound to the matrix by Schiff's bond formation and is released by hydrolysis of this bond as well by degradation of the OC-matrix. The release can be sustained over longer periods by reducing the Schiff's base with NaBH4. The insulin depots could be conveniently injected as suspensions and are able to maintain glucose levels in diabetized rabbits at normal values over several days.

Notes: The results obtained by testing the PALIT equation 100ϱ0[η] + In M = K1M2/3 + K2 with solutions of some polyphosphates and copolyphosphates have been analyzed and compared with the MARK-HOUWINK relationship. The values of the exponent a in the MARK-HOUWINK relationship were found to be higher for those samples which have higher values of K1 or lower values of K2 in the equation suggested by PALIT.
