    Notes: The virgin (reactive-site Leu18-Glu19 peptide bond intact) and modified (reactive-site Leu18-Glu19 peptide bond hydrolyzed) forms of turkey ovomucoid third domain (OMTKY3 and OMTKY3*, respectively) have been analyzed by proton-detected 1H{13C} two-dimensional single-bond correlation (1H{13C}SBC) spectroscopy. Previous 1H-nmr assignments of these proteins [A. D. Robertson, W. M. Westler, and J. L. Markley (1988) Biochemistry, 27, 2519-2529; G. I. Rhyu and J. L. Markley (1988) Biochemistry, 27, 2529-2539] have been extended to directly bonded 13C atoms. Assignments have been made to 52 of the 56 backbone 13Cα-1H units and numerous side-chain 13C-1H groups in both OMTKY3 and OMTKY3*. The largest changes in the 13C chemical shift upon conversion of OMTKY3 to OMTKY3* occur at or near the reactive site, and tend toward values observed in small peptides. Moreover, the side-chain prochiral methylene protons attached to the Cγ of Glu19 and Cδ of Arg21 show nonequivalent chemical shifts in OMTKY3 but more equivalent chemical shift in OMTKY3*. These results suggest that the reactive site region becomes less ordered upon hydrolysis of the Leu18-Glu19 peptide bond. Comparison of 13Cα chemical shifts of OMTKY3 and bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor [D. Brühuiler and G. Wagner (1986) Biochemistry 25, 5839-5843; N. R. Nirmala and G. Wagner (1988) Journal of the American Chemical Society, 110, 7557-7558] with small peptide values [R. Richarz and K. Wüthrich (1978) Biopolymers, 17, 2133-2141] suggests that 13Cα chemical shifts of residues residing in helices are generally about 2 ppm downfield of resonances from nonhelical residues.

    Notes: The water absorbency of a bleached softwood kraft pulp, as measured by its water retention value (WRV), was increased up to 30 times by graft polymerizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and subsequently hydrolyzing it to sodium polyacrylate-polyacrylamide copolymer. WRV was found to be related to the initial PAN graft level rather than to the final sodium polyacrylate content, and was independent of the grafting process used. However, the ceric ion process was found superior to both the cellulose xanthate-H2O2 and ferrous ion-H2O2 redox systems in that it occasioned only a minor loss during the hydrolysis stage and the WRV was less affected by drying. The WRV remained constant as pH was lowered from 9 to 5 but dropped to the level of unmodified pulp at pH 3.5 where the sodium salt is fully converted to poly(acrylic acid). Retention of 1% aqueous NaCl was about 60% of the WRV. The swelling properties of the grafted fibers under various conditions appear to be explained by considering the grafting to act in two ways: (a) the introduction of a potentially hydrophilic component capable of generating swelling pressures and (b) the reduction in the cohesion of the fiber by the interposition of graft polymer chains in the fiber structure.

    Notes: A model system for studying the reinforcement of paper is provided by the use of cationic latexes. The control of pH during addition of the latex to the pulp determines the uniformity of the latex deposition on the fibers. It is demonstrated, using scanning electron microscopy and mechanical testing of the sheet, that the dry and wet strength properties are improved by the more uniform distribution of a film-forming latex. Conversely, a nonfilming latex impedes bonding to the extent that the fiber surface is covered.

    Notes: The adsorption of poly(vinyl acetate) from benzene solution onto cellulosic materials having various porous structures was measured in an attempt to investigate the role of the pore size distribution in the sorption process. The variety of cellulose porous structures was obtained by combinations of different swelling agents - water, ethylenediamine, sodium hydroxide solution - with different subsequent drying treatments. The pore structure analysis was based on benzene desorption isotherms. The porosity of cellulose is responsible for selective adsorption of the smaller macromolecules from an unfractionated polymer solution. The amount of sorbed polymer increases when the polymer solution contains a greater fraction of lower molecular weight polymer. Only the pores above a certain size are accessible to the polymer. The amount of polymer sorbed is proportional to the area of such pores but is otherwise independent of the effects produced by swelling pretreatments.

    Notes: Polystyrene latexes have been synthesized by a method based on that Kotera et al.4 The polymerization rates and yields have been improved by the addition of an alcohol (methanol) to the reactants.     Notes: The sorption of poly(vinyl acetate) from benzene solution onto cellulose fibers has been investigated with particular attention to the nature and extent of the sorbed layer of polymer. The cellulose substrate has been varied by swelling pretreatments with water, ethylenediamine, and 18% sodium hydroxide. The density of the sorbed polymer after drying was found to be similar to that of the bulk polymer (1.19-1.20 g/cm3). Water vapor sorption isotherms were used to evaluate the internal surface of cellulose and the decrease in the surface area accessible to water after sorption of the polymer. This decrease was considered equivalent to the area covered by sorbed polymer. The amount of polymer sorbed per unit area (5.0-5.5 mg PVAc sorbed from benzene per 1 m2 of cellulose surface) was found to be substantially independent of the amount of sorbed polymer and of the swelling pretreatment, indicating that the thickness of the sorbed layer was quite uniform (40-50 Å). A comparison of the thickness of the sorbed layer in the dry state with the thickness of a monolayer with polymer molecules lying flat on the solid surface indicated that the fraction of the polymer segments attached directly to the surface was about 0.10. The amount of polymer sorbed per unit area of cellulose and consequently the thickness of the sorbed layer and the fraction of attachment can be affected by the nature of the solvent from which the polymer is sorbed.

    Notes: Four experimental latexes of different styrene-butadiene ratios stabilized with quaternized amino groups were employed in deposition studies on unbeaten kraft pulp fibers. The attraction between the oppositely charged latex and fibers facilitates a ready latex deposition in the pH region between the points of zero charge of the latex and of the fibers. The rate of deposition appears to be controlled by latex diffusion and convection up to the fiber surface. The distribution of latex particles deposited on the fiber surface is related to the butadiene content and the latex stability. Polystyrene latex is the most stable and covers the fibers uniformly as individual particles. With increased butadiene content, the coagulation region of the latex is more extended and the tendency to deposit as aggregates is promoted.

    Notes: The rheological properties of aqueous dispersions of hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile-grafted cellulose (H-CPAN) have been investigated. The experimental results are consistent with the idea that the elementary particle is a rigid cellulose protofibril stabilized in suspension by associated polyelectrolyte side chains (polyacrylamide-polyacrylic acid copolymer grafts). The behavior of intrinsic viscosity with electrolyte concentration, the concentration depependence and shear dependence of the viscosity and of the steady-state and dynamic shear moduli are qualitatively explained on this basis.

    Notes: The development, construction, and testing of a gas-fired radiant heat source for use as part of a fire test method is described. The unit has been shown capable of operation over extended periods at surface temperatures yielding radiance corresponding to that of a black body at 935 °C. This permits a 60% increase of specimen irradiance over that possible with a burner previously used, without modifying the specimen-burner configuration factor. One such application of this burner allows operation with specimen irradiance levels at 5 W cm-2 or for short periods at levels approaching 7 W cm-2 at higher temperatures. This performance is achieved while maintaining effective spatial separation between specimen and heat source. This assists in avoiding imposition of vitiated air near the surface of a burning specimen. Some performance data are provided on its behavior when supplied with natural gas. The unit can burn propane but only with a significant reduction of thermal output.
