Notes: The sorption and transport properties of newly developed aromatic carboxylate polymers have been investigated in the context of their application as membrane separators for water electrolyzers. Conductance measurements of aromatic carboxylates of various equivalent weights have been performed as a function of current density, temperature, and electrolyte environment. Results have been compared with those for Nafion 117. The sorption results in dilute and concentrated solution show large water and electrolyte uptake for the aromatic carboxylate films. Furthermore, relatively large sodium ion self-diffusion coefficients have been found in both dilute and concentrated solution environments. The results of these measurements are characteristic of microporous films. The de conductance behavior of the aromatic carboxylate ionomers is quite different from that found for nonporous 1150 equivalent weight Nafion membranes. This difference is caused primarily by the microporous structure of the aromatic carboxylates, which results in large membrane specific conductances.

Notes: The effect of polymer morphology on the dielectric breakdown of isotactic polypropylene was investigated under the influence of a ramped ac voltage. Samples were prepared by melt-pressing polypropylene beads into plaques and subsequently quenching or isothermally cyrstallizing these plaques. Some of the quenched samples were annealed at different temperatures to induce further crystallinity. The plaques were then characterized by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, density measurements, and differential scanning calorimetry. The 60 Hz, ac breakdown voltages of the samples were determined at 7°C, 23°C, and 45°C in a specially designed test cell. There was a lack of any significant effect on the ac breakdown strength of isotactic polypropylene of either the overall crystallinity or the crystallite thickness. This result can be understood in light of previous studies relating the electrical breakdown of polymers to morphology. It is postulated that the degree of crystallinity would influence the breakdown characteristics only when the amorphous regions constitute a small fraction of the total volume, that is, at very high crystallinity values - values beyond the range of the present study.

Notes: The individual, competitive, and displacement adsorption of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC) in aqueous solution onto an attapulgite clay has been systematically studied. For the individual adsorption experiments, the amount of polymer adsorbed at equilibrium decreased in the order PVOH, HEC, HPMC. In the competitive adsorption experiments, the adsorption level of each polymer is diminished by the presence of a competing polymeric species. Binary mixtures of a cellulosic polymer (HEC or HPMC) with PVOH result in a substantial reduction in the amount of cellulosic polymer adsorbed. In the displacement adsorption studies, the sequential addition of HEC or HPMC is not able to displace previously adsorbed PVOH molecules to any appreciable extent. However, the addition of PVOH to previously equilibrated HEC/clay or HPMC/clay suspensions results in a large amount of the adsorbed cellulosic polymer being displaced by PVOH, especially under conditions of high surface coverage. These results indicate that PVOH is preferentially adsorbed on the clay surface and the strength of attachment to the surface is greater for PVOH than for either cellulosic polymer.

Notes: The structural properties of epoxy can be retained and thermal stability improved by blending epoxy with bismaleimide (BMI) and curing them simultaneously. Depending on the curing agent, the overall viscoelastic properties of the cured material can be varied. In the present work, diaminodiphenylmethane and diaminodiphenyl sulfone have been used as curing agents to prepare blends of epoxy and BMI. The blends were characterized by DSC, TG, DMA, and SEM. Results indicate that an excellent interpenetrating network forms in both the cases and that the DDM-cured system gives better thermal stability than that of the DDS-cured system. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: An investigation was undertaken to study the extrusion behavior of composite systems. A compound made up of approximately 50 percent ceramic particulates by volume dispersed in a high molecular weight thermoplastic polymer was characterized by measuring the shear viscosity on an Instron capillary viscometer. The experimental data indicated that the ceramic composite exhibited an apparent yield stress. As a result, an expression that was previously shown to provide flexibility for describing a yield stress at low rates of deformation could explain the viscosity of the ceramic composite. The expression was then applied to the flow analysis of both a “rod” and a “slit” die in an extrusion process, and the derived equations adequately correlated experimental volumetric flow rate us. Pressure drop data obtained on a laboratory extruder.

Notes: Industrial film-blowing processes are characterized by large deformation rates, rapid changes of temperature and high stress levels. A pilot scale process was set up to simulate these variables. The pivotal element in modeling the process is a rheological constitutive equation which describes the fluid properties accurately over the entire range of conditions encountered; it was found that contributions to the stress in the material which arise out of the changing thermal history of a fluid element were a significant fraction of the total. When the deforming film is subjected to stretching but to little or no blowing, the axial stresses in the film are predicted excellently by the model under both isothermal and non-isothermal processing conditions. With rapid blowing and major deviations from uniaxial extension, the axial stresses are predicted less well, but still satisfactorily, under the conditions used. In no case are the circumferential stresses predicted accurately: i.e. unequal biaxial extensional deformations represent complications which have not been resolved.

Notes: The increase in the rate of polymer crystallization brought about by mechanical deformation above the polymer glass-transition temperature is examined. For flexible macromolecules, this deformation results in alignment and extension of polymer chains. By hypothesizing that the instantaneous growth rate at a given constant temperature depends uniquely on the polymer chain orientation in the surrounding melt, an explicit expression is obtained for the growth rate of a spherulite in terms of experimentally measurable quantities. Isothermal meltspinning experiments were conducted with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) using a laboratory setup. Very large values of the total crystallinity and significantly enhanced values of the crystallization rate were generated by operating at different temperatures that straddle the temperature of maximum crystallization rate for the quiescent melt. Measured rates of crystallization do, indeed, correlate with the instantaneous amorphous orientation. Furthermore, a masterplot, independent of temperature, is obtained by normalizing the crystallization rate under spinning conditions with that under quiescent conditions. This is the first time that such data have become available, and, given the processing history, such a master plot should be of use in predicting the crystallinity levels in actual nonisothermal industrial experiments.

Notes: The SCHIFF bases, 4-(2-hydroxy-ethylimino) pentane-2-one (abbr. HEA) und 1-[N-(2′-hydroxyethyl)iminomethyl]-2-naphthol (abbr. HNA) form solid complexes with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Pd(II), Cd(II) and UO2(II). The elemental analyses, molecular weight, magnetic moment values and electronic spectral data have been used to establish the stoichiometry and structures of these compounds. Based on the studies it is concluded that Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes of these SCHIFF bases display tetrahedral structures whereas Pd(II) complexes exhibit a square-planar configuration. Cu(II) complexes of HEA and HNA are tetrahedral. Ni(II) complexes of HEA and HNA were found to possess octahedral and tetrahedral configurations, respectively.

Notes: The condensation of acetylacetone with anthranilic acid in presence of piperidine as the condensing agent gives acetylacetoneanthranilic acid SCHIFF'S base (H2AA) which forms complexes with Zinc (II) and Palladium (II). The dissociation constants of H2AA have been determined by interpolation at half n̄ values and also by algebraic method which give the values 4.85 and 8.25 at 30° ± 1 °C for the dissociation constants. The stability constants of Zinc (II) and Palladium (II) complexes have been determined adopting CALVIN and MELCHIOR'S extension of BJERRUM'S method and the values of log k1 are found to be 2.92 and 3.97 respectively at 30° ± 1 °C. In these complexes 1:1 metal-ligand stoichiometry is observed.
