Notes: A new amperometric sensor for determination of free cholesterol based on a bilayer-film coating has been fabricated and its sensor characteristics have been examined by cyclic voltammetry and under steady-state conditions. The electrode substrate was coated with two kinds of polymeric films in a bilayer state, i.e., first with the redox-active cobalt tetrakis(o-aminophenyl)prophyrin polymer (poly-CoTAPP), and then with the enzyme film consisting of bovine serum albumin and cholesterol oxidase (CHOx). In this sensor system for assay of free cholesterol, oxygen consumption could be monitored by measuring the current for oxygen reduction electrocatalyzed by the inner poly-CoTAPP film according to the following reaction sequence:where reactions 1, 2, and 3 correspond to the cholesterol-cholesterol oxidase enzymatic-reaction, the electrocatalytic reduction of O2 by the poly-CoTAPP film, and the electrode reaction of Co(III/II)TAPP couple in the poly-CoTAPP film, respectively. The reproducible relationship between concentration of free cholesterol and sensor output was obtained. The sensitivity and the dynamic range were found to depend on the amount of CHOx confined in the enzyme film.

Notes: The electrogeneration of superoxide ion (O2-) by the one-electron reduction of O2 in alkaline aqueous media has been examined using the hanging mercury drop electrode in the presence of several surfactants of the quinoline groups. Based on the superoxide dismutase (SOD)-catalyzed disproportionation behavior of O2- on the cyclic voltammograms, new surfactants, in the presence of which O2- was actually electrogenerated, could be searched: 2-, 4-, 6-, 7- and 8-methylquinolines (3,4,5,6 and 7), and 2-phenyl and 5,6-benzoquinolines (8 and 9). It was found that the effectiveness for the electrogeneration of O2- largely depends on the surfactant and decreases in the order of quinoline (l), isoquinoline (2) 〉 5, 6, 7 〉 3, 4 〉 8 〉 triphenylphosphine oxide (10) 〉 9. In addition, a brief discussion on the structure and physicochemical properties of the surfactant film desirable for the effective O2- electrogeneration in aqueous media is given.

Notes: Raman spectra of anatase have been observed in natural and synthetic crystals. Both crystals show the same spectral features. The Raman band occurring at 516 cm-1 at room temperature is split into two peaks centred at 519 cm-1 and 513 cm-1 at low temperature (73 K). The six Raman active fundamentals predicted by group theory are all observed and assigned. The spectra are analyzed by a simple model considering only short-range forces and the calculated vibrational frequencies are in good agreement with the observed Raman frequencies.
