Notes: A membrane-assisted solvent extraction (MASX) system coupled to a membrane-assisted distillation stripping (MADS) system for use in decontaminating ground-water is evaluated. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the groundwater are extracted in the MASX unit using a sunflower oil solvent. In the MADS unit, VOCs are stripped from the sunflower oil, which is recycled to the MASX unit. Thermodynamic data for the sunflower oil-water-VOCs system were measured. The results were used along with published membrane mass-transfer data to design MASX and MADS modules.

Notes: Transient heat transfer in a mechanically agitated vessel is studied in the case of an anchor and an helical ribbon impeller using Newtonian and shear thinning fluids. Temperature stratification is found more pronounced with the anchor, making this impeller clearly inadequate for heat transfer. The impact of natural convection is evaluated first using the classical Gr/Re2 ratio. It is shown that the use of this criterion in viscous mixing is somewhat misleading. A new Grashof number is then proposed to assess the significance of the viscous and buoyancy effects in non-isothermal, non-Newtonian mixing applications. It is shown that the interpretation of this new number is strongly related to the concept of process viscosity.

Notes: A quick technique for determination of kinetic parameters of fermentation processes is proposed and applied to the transformation of D-xylose into ethanol by Pichia stipitis. The commonly used method to evaluate these parameters is based on achieving several steady states. In the proposed procedure, μm and Ks can be determined from only one steady state, by provoking a disturbance over it, after allowing the system to return to the original conditions. The main difference between the steady and unsteady state methods is the required fermentation time; while the former method lasted 350 h, the latter required a period 25 times lower. Kinetic and stoichiometric parameters were determined with both methods under anoxic and limited oxygen concentration conditions. Results from the two methods were compared, giving only 2% and 4.5% differences in the values of Ks and μm and a little over 4% for μm were the deviations under the latter ones. © 1993 Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A new differential pulse polarographic method is proposed for the determination of nicardipine, based on the electroactivity of the nitroaromatic group of the molecule. The proposed method is applied in the determination of the drug in pharmaceutical formulations and in photodegradation studies.

Notes: Nimesulide, N-(4-nitro-2-phenoxyphenyl)methanesulfonamide is an antiinflamatory analgesic agent that is both reducible at the mercury electrode and oxidizable at the glassy carbon electrode. Nimesulide in hydroalcoholic solution, presents cathodic response in a wide range of pH (2-12), both, by differential pulse and tast polarography techniques. The obtained results show only one main well-defined peak or wave in all the pH range studied. This peak (or wave) corresponds to the nitro group reduction in position 4. The voltammetric oxidation shows one well-resolved signal in all the pH range studied. This anodic signal could be attributed to the methylsulfonamide group oxidation. For analytical purposes, a very well resolved diffusion controlled differential pulse polarographic peak obtained at pH 7 was selected. This peak was used to develop a new method for the determination of nimesulide in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The recovery study (104.8% with a RSD of 1.3%) shows that the method is sufficiently accurate and precise to be applied in the individual tablet assay of commercial samples.

Notes: We exhibit that the radial eigenfunctions of a 2D-harmonic oscillator (2DHO) may be regarded as 1D-harmonic oscillator (1DHO) matrix elements. From this simple fact and using as a starting point the ladder operators â± for 1DHO, we obtain ladder operators for 2DHO. Furthermore, by using the relationship between the Coulomb and Morse problems with a 2DHO, we are able to obtain the ladder operators for the former problems without explicitly recurring to the factorization method. Some uses of the technique presented are suggested. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: This study focused on the potent cytotoxic effect that mitoxantrone produces on Ehrlich ascites tumour cells. Host mice treated with mitoxantrone showed a life span three times higher than control non-treated host mice. Mitoxantrone also showed a potent cytotoxic effect on Ehrlich cells incubated in vitro for only a few hours. Studies on the effect of mitoxantrone on a plasma membrane redox system showed that mitoxantrone inhibits this activity, which is apparently related to cell proliferation.

Notes: Ferricyanide reductase activity of plasma membranes isolated from Ehrlich ascites tumour cells was very sensitive to trypsin treatment. The decreases of activity observed after treatment with different glycosidases suggests that ferricyanide reductase is a glycoprotein. The opposite effects of phospholipase A2 and phospholipase C on the redox activity indicate that the phospholipidic environment plays an important role in the function of ferricyanide reductase. Sodium ions at millimolar concentrations, and some divalent cations at micromolar concentrations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Sr2+, and Mn2+) behaved as stimulators of ferricyanide reductase activity.

Notes: A conformational analysis of two model compounds of vitamin D was carried out by means of theoretical computations, Ab initio calculations were carried out using the standard 6-31G* basis set at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level of theory. In addition, the Møller-Plesset (MP2) correlation treatment was applied on the simplest model. Semiempirical calculations were also performed using the AM1 Hamiltonian. The results predict stable A-ring twist forms with energies in the order of 4-6 kcal/mol relative to the global minimum, significantly higher than those reported from molecular mechanics calculations. In addition, a folded conformation was found by the HF optimizations; however, its stability is predicted to be very poor. Comparison of the theoretical results with experimental data is discussed.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.   J Comput Chem 18: 1647-1655, 1997

Notes: A perifusion system was designed in order to study glucose and glutamine metabolism by freshly harvested Ehrlich ascites tumour cells in steady state conditions. Cells were perifused in the presence of 5 mM glucose, 0·5 mM glutamine or 5mM glucose and 0·5 mM glutamine. The results in steady state reveal that both substrates glucose and glutamine are continuously wasted by tumour cells, excreting two moles of lactate per mol of glucose and one mol of glutamate and ammonia per mol of glutamine consumed into the medium. Glutamine consumption in the presence of glucose was higher than with glutamine alone.
