Notes: A mathematical model has been developed which describes organics removal, oxygen utilization, ammonianitrogen removal, ortho-phosphate removal, and biomass production in an aggregated microbial suspension containing a uniform floc size and the organics as a soluble biodegradable material. It is applicable to both steady-state and transient conditions, as well as to systems experiencing only carbon oxidation or to systems experiencing both carbon oxidation and nitrification. The model, consisting of five partial differential equations and four ordinary differential equations, takes into account the flow pattern in the reactor, intraparticle mass transport of oxygen, organics, ammonia-nitrogen and ortho-phosphate, and biochemical reactions by the individual cells embedded in the floc.

Description / Table of Contents: Kinetic Investigations of Diels-Alder-Reactions of Cyclooctyne with Consecutive AromatizationThe tricyclic compounds 3a - g, generated from cyclooctyne (1) and the cyclic dienes 2a - g, show a totally different stability. 3a, b, f, and g decompose spontaneously. By elimination of CO2, SO2, CO, and N2, respectively, the aromatic systems 4a - c are formed. 3e loses C2H4 on heating. 3e is thermally cleaved only to a very small extent, but efficiently in the photolysis and finally 3d is stable against aromatization. Detailed kinetical measurements are performed of the thermal elimination of ethylene and of the photochemical bisdecarbonylation.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Conformation and the Electronic Structure of CyclooctadienynesConformations and electronic structures of the cyclooctadienynes 1 and 2, predicted by semi-empirical quantum mechanics, are verified experimentally with the aid of 1H NMR and PE spectra. The results are correlated with those of other cycloalkynes 3-5 and cycloalkenes 6-11. In contrast to the decisive influence of the high geometrical ring strain in 1 and 2, homoaromaticity based on six almost planar π-electron centres is not significant.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of Aromatic Hydrocarbons from 1,2,3-Selenadiazoles and α-PyronesA simple synthesis of aromatic hydrocarbons is demonstrated by the examples 8a-f, h-j, and 10g. The essential step is a [π2 + π4] cycloaddition of cycloalkynes 3 and α-pyrones 9, a Diels-Alder reaction with inverse electronic demand. The corresponding 1,2,3-selenadiazoles 2 are used as precursors of 3. The whole process 2 + 9 → 8 is enabled by the elimination of N2, Se, and CO2 in this sequence.

Notes: A mathematical model has been developed which describes substrate removal, oxygen utilization, and biomass production in an aggregated microbial suspension containing the substrate as a soluble biodegradable material and a uniform floc size. It is applicable to both steady-state and transient conditions. The model, consisting of three partial differential equations and two ordinary differential equations, takes into account the flow pattern in the reactor, intraparticle mass transport of oxygen and substrate, and biochemical reaction by individual cells embedded in the floc. Efficient numerical solution of the coupled nonlinear equations is obtained using an implicit finite difference approach for both the reactor and floc equations. A convergent solution is realized through block interation utilizing the tridiagonal algorithm. Results indicate that a unifying theory of activated sludge dynamics will have to consider coupling between floc chemical kinetics and changes in the bulk liquid characteristics. Floc size emerges as an important influence on system performance. It appears necessary to distinguish between a system response caused by diffuslonal resistances and nutrient limitations within the floc and a response caused by physiological adaption when analyzing the transient behavior of an activated sludge process. Future research should be devoted to rigorous laboratory determinations of model parameters along with extensions to include limitations of nutrients other than orgabnic carbon and oxygen.

Notes: A mathematical model has been developed for a fixed-film biological process (film flow over a flat plate) that describes bulk liquid transport, diffusional transport of oxygen and organics across a stagnant film, diffusional transport of oxygen and organics into the biofilm, biochemical reactions by the individual cells within the biofilm, biofilm growth, and cell density changes within the biofilm due to cellular decay. Simulation studies are presented to show how contact time and diffusion layer thickness affect process performance.
