    Notes: Although Newtonian jet stability has been the object of numerous experimental and theoretical studies, the total problem of jet disintegration is by no means solved. Theories available in the literature are only applicable to low-speed laminar jets in stagnant air. In practice, the stability of a liquid jet may be influenced by the ambient medium, turbulence in the nozzle, and the extent of development of the velocity profile. None of these factors has received adequate study. This work presents the beginning of a systematic evaluation of the role played by these factors in the destabilization of a liquid jet. Correlations are presented for predicting the stability of both turbulent and high-speed laminar jets in stagnant air.

    Notes: The breakup of a low speed horizontal jet is investigated. Weber's theory for the Newtonian jet is extended to a linear viscoelastic fluid. The theory predicts a dependence of breakup length on the elasticity number. Breakup lengths are measured for low concentration solutions of polyisobutylene in tetralin. Two molecular weights, several concentrations, and five capillary diameters were studied. A single correlation is obtained for all data which gives the breakup length as a function of the elasticity number, and the parameters of Weber's theory. At constant values of the Ohnesorge number and Weber number, the breakup length decreases with increasing elasticity number. The effect of the length of the capillary is studied. At large elasticity numbers short tubes give rise to slightly shorter breakup lengths than long tubes under identical flow conditions.

    Notes: Turbulent pipe flow was examined by measuring the radial dispersion of dyed fluid introduced at an axial point source within the flow. From the classical theoretical results of G. I. Taylor it was possible thereby to calculate various parameters that characterize the structure of the turbulent flow field. A comparison was made between water, and aqueous solutions of polyethylene oxide (Polyox) at concentrations up to 50 ppm (by weight). Results indicate that Polyox affects the turbulence in the following ways: (1) intensity is reduced, (2) the energy spectrum is shifted toward low frequency, (3) dispersion occurs largely through large scale motion, and intermittency is increased. Indication is also seen that a simple exponential form for the Lagrangian correlation coefficient is superior to other often recommended models.

    Notes: A simple fluid dynamic model is developed which predicts the thinning rate of a viscous film of liquid, in contact with the smooth interior surface of a long cylindrical tube, due to the shearing action of a turbulent flow of an immiscible fluid through the tube. Experiments indicate the degree to which the model provides an accurate means of predicting viscous film removal from the tube. Similar experiments performed with electrochemically roughened tubes elucidate the limitation of this cleaning process due to surface roughness. The observed limitation is consistent with an analysis based on numerical solutions of the equations for shear flow over a rough surface.

    Notes: The drop size distributions resulting from the agitation of immiscible liquids were measured over a wide range of parameters. The average drop size is correlated by \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \overline D _{32}/L $\end{document} = 0.053 NWe-0.60. The distribution function for volume fraction is normal and depends only upon \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \overline D _{32} $\end{document}. The results are valid for very dilute solutions wherein coalescence of droplets plays no role in the dispersion mechanism.

For Weber numbers less than 5.3 (based on air density) air pressure has no effect on stability. Ambient viscosity, through the effect of shear stresses acting on the jet surface, gives rise to the maximum in the breakup curve. For large Weber numbers ambient pressure effects can alter, and eventually control, the appearance of the maximum.

    Notes: The collapse of a single spherical gas bubble within a large body of fluid creates a uniaxial elongational flow in the surrounding fluid. Collapse under constant bubble pressure is observed to produce nearly constant strain rate kinematics. If the steady state stress at the bubble/fluid boundary could be measured, it would be possible to estimate the elongational viscosity of the fluid.Unfortunatley the experiment does not yield the desired stress data, except in the special case of the Newtonian fluid. We are led to define an apparent elongational viscosity, and for specific constitutive models we can evaluate the deviation between the apparent and true viscosity. The experimental and theoretical work indicate that the apparent elongational viscosity provides a good estimate of true elongational viscosity for the tow viscoelastic solutions studied so far.

    Notes: The degree of radial dispersion of medium size particles (ηK 〈 dp 〈 lf) emanating from a point source, is measured photographically in the turbulent core of a fully developed vertical pipe flow of water. From the classical theoretical results of G. Taylor, it was then possible to calculate statistical parameters which characterize the turbulent particle motion. A comparison is made between a tracer and neutrally dense, buoyant and heavy particles. Results indicate that the effect of particle intertia is negligible, and that the crossing trajectories effect dominates the dispersion process. A “wake effect” causes a buoyant particle to disperse to a greater degree than an equivalent heavy particle. An exponential-cosine form of the Lagrangian autocorrelation coefficient provides a best fit for the dispersion data, although a purely exponential form is equally adequate for practical calculations.
